An impressive study and an easy read
A huge book that traces the history of America from pre-Columbus through present day. Although considered by many to be a "text book" for study, it is not written in that format. It reads easily and clearly. It is non-biased and informative. The pictures are helpful. It's the first book on American history that I have been able to finish. Although expensive, I think that every book collection ...

outstanding
I first encountered the Tindall/Shi American history books while a student in college. As a history major, I found that it was almost a requirement for history books to be boring. That is just not the case with this one. I would be lying if I said that there weren't parts of this book that drag, but there are parts of American history that just aren't too terribly interesting. By and large, ...

So worth it.
I bought this item for brand new on Amazon. I needed this book for a class, and the rate for a used version was about 100 dollars. I bought the brand new book on amazon for 35.00 dollars. What a great value!!!!

Amazingly detailed for a brief edition!!
This is such a good study book. It's wonderfully written and amazingly detailed for a "brief" edition. The book covers American history from Columbus' times all the way through to the election of 2000. The book contains useful maps, a glossary of terms and an appedix with all kinds of information. I used it for a college course and have no regrets buying it because it's worth your money. There is ...

A great bargain
This is one of the most portable but comprehensive history textbook for US history. It is a must-have for US history students. And the price here was the cheapest I could find online.

be warned
There are at least three versions of this book available: Volume I, Volume II, and a combined volume. Be warned that this one is only Volume II.

Our friend, the Charlatan.
George Gissing is not a name most people would recognize as one of the great Victorian novelists.Though always admired by those who experienced his powerful and original work,he never achieved the wide readership that the critically underrated Trollope has,let alone the perennial favorites-the Brontes and Dickens.Even obviously lesser yet talented authors such as Wilkie Collins,Mary Elizabeth ...

Great for students, teachers, and readers of every sort
This is volume 2 of a tremendous American history survey, beginning with the Reconstruction era and continuing to the present (well, almost). I used it for 2 years as a university text; I thoroughly enjoyed it and the students didn't seem to dislike it too much (which is saying a great deal). The writing is sophisticated, but the work is also quite readable. As the title suggests, it's a ...

brick of knowledge
Highly informative, highly relatable, and highly dense. Today was the first day that I read out of this book without falling asleep-- I actually use this book when I have trouble sleeping. It isn't written in a very engaging way. Last year for AP European history I read every word of Jackson J. Spielvogel's Western Civilization (5th ed) but I just can't get through this book. The language isn't ...

Pretty useless
I am using this textbook in a 200 level college American history class. I am so dissapointed the professor didn't require a better book for us. It barely grazes over key important points in history. I find myself constantly on the internet trying to get more information to write my papers. It seems like it's written for high school level readers, but I wouldn't recommend it even for that. It's ...

middle-class struggles and emerging feminism..
Sad to say, most people, even those who are fans of Victorian-era literature, have probably never heard of George Gissing. Those who do know him think perhaps he was a 'one hit wonder' with New Grub Street. While New Grub Street is a brilliant read, his little known In the Year of the Jubilee (IYJ) is also a gem. On the surface, IYJ is a story common to Victorian-era novels. People are ...
