Excellent Value
This great little book has all of Manet's paintings in it. If the text discusses it, then the picture is in there. It includes enlargements of selected areas of critical paintings and even includes paintings by others if a comparsion is made. The scholarship is excellent including placing Manet in context, except for mistaking the American Revolution for the Civil War. For $10, one cannot ...

Excellent Book; however...
This is a very nice volume. The reproductions are first class; the essays are excellent. However, a strange thing occured as a result of having procured this book: now that I've seen a great many Renoirs together, I find that I admire his work less. It's a very cruious thing. I've always loved Renoir--or thought I did. But as a result of this book, I now see that while some of his work ...

excellent
in addition to providing many details about Dali's life, his relationship with Breton and the surrealists, his friendship with Picasso and so on, the book provides the reader with an excellent discussion/analysis/explanation of Dali's artistic/aesthetic choices and of his 'paranoiac-critical method'. This seems to be the definitive book on Dli's paintings.

An excellent value
This is another welcome addition to Taschen's 25th Anniversary Series of large, hardcover collections. You get excellent reproductions of many of Henri Matisse's finest work along with Gilles Neret's expert commentary. Besides the works themselves, I found the most valuable part of the book to be the historical and biographical information. Neret provides a nice amount of historical and ...

CARAVAGGIO
Notorious bad boy of Italian Baroque painting, Caravaggio (1571-1610) is finally getting the recognition he deserves. Though his name may be familiar to all of us, his work has been habitually detested and forced into obscurity. Not only was his theatrical realism unfashionable in his time, but his sacrilegious subject matter and use of lower class models were violently scorned. Caravaggio's ...

Stunning
Well, at nearly 6kg, a whap in the head with this thing would certainly loosen some screws. That's not what I meant, though. It's huge, beautiful, and encyclopedic. It covers Dalí's entire career, with all of the different stages he went through in creating his art and himself. There's just too much to try to summarize here - the book takes over 1600 photos to illustrate his life. Most of them ...

Rubens for amateurs!
...This small book is a treasure for those who are just going into the Art world and Rubens...it is a piece of a collection worth having...it gives you a little about the artist...and his most important paintings...I started my collection a year ago, and can tell you for the price there is not a better buy!

A Steal of a Deal
I am not doing this review to acquaint readers with what this book covers, for the above editorial review does that well. Rather, I want to make sure that readers know that in spite of selling for so little, this book offers all one would expect from a book published by Taschen: superb colored photography, line drawings, maps, a glossary of terms and, of course, good writing/explanations. ...

A Super Collection of Savador Dali Paintings!
This edition has the tiger's leaping out of a fish toward a nude woman on the cover. Both dreamlike and nightmare-like, Dali's paintings are irresistible. In this collection, there is a large reproduction of "Archeological Reminiscence of the 'Angelus' by Millet." It shows the ruins of two buildings that have human-like shapes. In the foreground a man is holding the hand of a child and pointing ...

enjoyable art
This book is full of enjoyable and interesting art. It also has a quality cover & mostly color plates. Much of the art is medieval, although it spans from antiquity to recent decades. It covers all genres of the subject, from religious works to ads and pop-art. This whole icons series from Taschen looks interesting.

Discovering de Lempicka
If you are intrigued by the art work of Tamara de Lempicka and want to find out more about the artist, this is a great place to start. Her art is displayed in many, large format color prints which appear throughout the book accompanied bu comments on her education and dedication as an artist. Tamara, the woman, is revealed as a passionate participant in the creative soup of pre-WWII Europe. ...

modern mystics
Modern Art has often been understood as a progression from (somewhere, roughly around) the slashing strokes of Frans Hals, to the atmospheres of Turner and Monet, to the Fauves, to Matisse's dissolution of perspective, exacerbated by the Cubists, and ultimately to the abstract expressionists, with Dada as the inflection point to complete and utter nihilism. Towering, arbitrary, disassociative ...

The birth of Egyptology
This is almost entirely a book of illustrations, with a few in color. The brief introductory text section is given in French, English and German. Most of the illustrations are not captioned, those that do have captions are only in French. Napoleon's expedition to Egypt at the end of the 18th century was a military and political fiasco. However, it did give birth to Egyptology. 500 civilians ...

Riding Dali's Roller-Coaster
As a college art major I developed a distaste for Dali and his art, even referring to him as a "pimp" in an essay. I was turned off by his commercialism and his overly-polished style. But over the years my opinion began to shift, and the major retrospective at the Philadelphia Museum of Art has completely renovated my appreciation for the man and his art. This huge and handsome tome is the ...

A BOOK WORTHY FOR YOUR EROTICA COLLECTION.
The first thing you notice about this book is it's 7 1/2 by 5 1/2 by 2 1/4 inch thick. A small and thick book just like the books Cheescake! and Eric Stanton The Dominant Wives and Other Stories. This book is a collection of mostly black and white photos of nude women in erotic lingerie that our fathers (your father, not the country's founders)oogled. They are great picts and can still ...

Dali 1 Vol (2 volumes into one hardcover edition)
Being the owner of many books based on the works of Salvador Dali, which includes "Dali The Work, The Man", I admit to being somewhat skeptical about yet another "complete" edition; that it would probably have pretty much the same information and reproductions of his art as my other books. I now admit to being incorrect, because this is a well made edition with a truly fantastic bargain price. I ...

Revealing, Educational and Loads of Photos
First of all, the book is not covered as shown in the amazon photo which shows the famous "kiss" painting. The book, apparently updated in 2006, shows a cover photo of Klimt's famous Danae (1907-8) oil on canvas painting. I think this cover is more provacative and more organic and softer than the famed Kiss painting which reveals a couple entwined in gold looking rather stiff. Danae was ...

Gorgeous!
I bought this book to accompany "Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling" by Ross King--which, if you're interested in the subject, is a great laymen's introduction to the glories of the Sistine Chapel. If you've ever had the privilege of seeing the ceiling or "The Last Judgment" you know you don't exactly get up close, and it's easy to be overwhelmed. This beautiful book concentrates on the ...
