Probably the best English-language biography about Archduke Franz Ferdinand
Brook-Shepherd, a longtime European correspondent for the British newspaper _Daily Telegraph_, has put in a great deal of effort and time into the research on this book. As he wrote in the 1980's, he had access to Sophie, the last surviving child (and the firstborn) of Franz Ferdinand and Duchess Sophie of Hohenberg, and conducted extensive interviews with her and other descendants of the ...

An engrossing and informative account of the end of WWI.
In "November, 1918" Gordon Brook-Shepherd writes about the last 100 days of World War I, not only on the more familiar Western Front, but in every major theater of battle. He does an admirable job of demonstrating the interconnectedness of these different areas, showing, for instance, how the surrender of Bulgaria affected the will of Germany to prolong the War. Although there is a plethora ...

A seminal work
A seminal work of great magnitude but weak in its analysis of pre-20th century history. This book gives a whirlwind tour of Austrian History from 1200-1900. Then the book slows down and achieves greatness in describing the intricacies of Franz Joseph's rule as well as WWI and the road to Anschloss with Germany. The book picks up by describing the little know portion of Austrian history, the ...

Eccellent book, also detailed description of the background
As I admire Austria very much, I love the books of Gordon Brook-Shepherd. He always gives you an objevtive view of the situation. The tragic assasination is described in an excellent way, there is also a lot of background information about the life of Franz Ferdinand and about Europe of the late 19th century. There are also good pictures and maps concerning the assasination. I loved this book ...

a thoughtful and sympathetic portrait of King and Emperor Karl
Gordon Brook-Shepherd has written a sympathetic and thoughtful biography of Carl, the last Emperor of Austria and last King of Hungary, who guided his countries and empire through the latter part of World War One. An extremely decent ruler, Emperor Carl had to pay for the mistakes of others. This book, which draws on the Habsburg Family archives as well as of those of the House of Windsor is ...

Another good study of the Habsburgs.
I just today finished this book, all tolled in one day. I have read much of Mr Brook-Shepherds work and always enjoyed it. His research is well done and noted (though I wish he would revert to footnotes and not endnotes which keep me flipping back constantly). I was looking for more genealogical information on the family then and now. Brook-Shepherd refers to Otto's sister Adelaide as ...

Self-deluding heroics versus ruthless efficiency
Though the story of the Russian Civil War and of the overt Western intervention is well covered elsewhere, this is the first work that this reviewer has seen which attempts to give a comprehensive overview of the covert operations that complemented more open opposition to the Bolsheviks. Though a considerable degree of uncertainty remains, the present work, based on access to recently-released ...

Born to Be Emperor
This is a fine biography of a man who, but for a World War, might have been an Emperor and King. Otto von Hapsburg, born in 1912,was the son of the last Emperor of Austria-Hungary. His parents were overthrown in late 1918 and young Otto, whose own memories of his childhood are astonishingly vivid, began a life of exile. Otto had every right to be bitter over the hand fate dealt him, but we see ...
