Marvelous!
Mr. Koda and The Costume Institute scores with this lovely exhibition catalog! While not as lavish or sumptuous as The Philadelphia Museum of Art's 2003 Shocking! The Art and Fashion of Elsa Schiaparelli by Dilys Blum (at this juncture the absolute gold standard for Costume exhibition catalogs) this remains nonetheless an absolutely gorgeous volume. A perfect counterpoint if you will, to the even ...

Human preoccupation for Millennia
Sentient humans with brains as well as bodies have always been fascinated by the way we adorn ourselves and why. Once we can get past the cultural anthropology of fashion, and the fads that make it a billion-dollar world industry, we can dig down to discover the roots of historical and current adorned beauty, and EXTREME BEAUTY does this . . . beautifully. It is pleasing--in an era in which ...

GORGEOUSLY PRETTY
PRETTY can have a negative connotation....but NOT here. Truly PRETTY PRETTY illustrations and clothes. Lanvin clearly very different from the other greats. Her clothes are, well, dare I say PRETTY in the very best sense. Lots of pics and a real delight to see her work in depth. I can't speak to the text because I buy books for the pics. Also, very little on the current designer. Almost all the ...

The ancient world re-interpreted anew
This is an exhibition catalogue for the Metropolitan Museum of Art costume institute. It chronicles the influence the fashions of ancient Greece and Rome has had in more modern times on women's costume. Printed on a very nice matt paper (even for photos) it contrasts examples of ancient art such as statues and painted vases with the work of later fashion designers. We get examples of the work ...

Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy
It was great to purchase this book through Amazon. It was a gift for my daughter's birthday and it was going to cost $90 in an art bookshop in the city so I was thrilled to purchase it through Amazon at less that half this cost. Keep up the great work guys. I'll definitely use your service again.

Keepsake Book
This is a beautiful book and one you would love to have in your home. Of course, since I work for the company it is dear to me. I have given this book to three different people and they all have loved it. If you want to give something special to someone-- this is it.

Wonderful.....
If you were lucky enough to see this show you know what a wonderful, edgy but beautiful exhibit it was. I was so happy there would be a book and anticipated it for many many months. I know that no book can recreate the actual expereince of being there so just having the visual representations in the photographs, which by the way I found to be very good, it looked just the way it looked when you ...
Valentina: American Couture and the Cult of Celebrity
Kohle Yohannan
Rizzoli
, 2009
Valentina was the twentieth century?s first American fashion designer celebrity, working and living on equal social footing with the clientele she dressed (Greta Garbo, Gloria Swanson, Katharine Hepburn, Millicent Rogers, and Audrey Hepburn, among others). One of the few designers who proved that America could live without the Parisian haute couture, her career is a much needed missing link in the history of American fashion. Beyond merely ...

Iris Apfel, what a rare bird indeed...
I was lucky enough to view the exhibit 'Iris Apfel - Rare Bird of Fashion' at the Norton Museum in Palm Beach, and what a visual treat it was... Not only is she an icon of fashion, but her style, her combinations of colors and her very different approach to the matter is something everybody should see and study. I have seen and met her in New York, she is the most terrific person!!! The book is ...

Delightful dressing
This is a fabulous insight into 18th Century French society. As a costume designer, I found the inclusion of paintings from that period, intermixed with the museum settings to be of particular interest. The close-up photographs of details were also wonderful. The text was fascinating and very enjoyable reading. It's very often tempting to take things out of context according to one's own ...

An Exquisite Album of Christian Dior's Work
This is a portrait album of a sampling of Christian Dior's masterpieces shown in the 1996 New York Metropolitain Museum of Art's retrospective. Every garment is beautifully captured. The detail photographs are exceptional. But this is more than just a picture book about the 11 years Dior designed under his own name. The text offers a balance of historical costume references that Dior used in ...

Re-relevant in fashion's present.
The thesis of the historical mode is always worth re-visiting, although it was addressing that moment at the perilous close of the 1980s, when fashion's excesses had peaked - or, more accurately, piqued. A sweet and pretty book, with splendid Josef Astor photos and iconic fashion runway shots of the nascent John Galliano and resplendent Romeo Gigli and Karl Lagerfeld. A worthy and timeless text ...

Comprehensive Historical Reference
This is not a typical fashion tome. The authors have traced the historical influences of Mr. Armani as well as validlly documenting his contribution to history (both in terms of fashion and in sociological influence). The photographs are well chosen and show the broad scope of his work. The detailed description accompanying the photographs of the actual museum exhibts are informative and ...
