This book makes you think!

Faith in God turbo-charges our indwelling healing nature
I think what is amazing about this book is that Herbert Benson states without a doubt that faith in God is healthy for us. While our ancestors took it for granted that God healed them, as Dr. Benson explains, we have been taught to see healing purely in technical scientific terms. Dr. Benson explains that when we repudiated the importance of belief in healing we deprived ourselves of a powerful ...

Five Stars!
This book is by far the best guide to mind/body techniques to healing and recovery of the body and spirit. Dr. Benson's Mind/Body Clinic at Beth Israel Deaconness Hospital in Boston is widely respected and uses all the techniques made available here. Indispensible.

I love this book
Just reading this book helped enormously, and has given me a lot of tools to help put a self-treatment process in place. A lot of attention to the underlying thoughts and emotions connected to chronic insomnia and how to begin breaking them down. Yes, it is all apparently simple, but the pieces all fit together so that it works, although it can take more than six weeks, and I have found myself ...

Lowered Blood pressure, No more acid reflux
Let me just start by stating that I'm a very sceptical person, and have had high blood pressure for 20 years. I also had endoscopy that showed some acid reflux. I saw the original print hardcover book and decided to read it. I couldn't put it down! I immediately began to apply the techniques from the book. My blood pressure went from 145ish/95ish to 108/65, consistently. I felt no "burning" from ...

Groundbreaking
Quite simply Herbert Benson, through the Relaxation Response and Beyond the Relaxation Response, put meditation on the map for the medical profession and for interested laymen who weren't adepts of some guru, yogi, maharishi or other spiritual master. This he did by providing an easy to follow, non-religious based program for eliciting a meditative state AND by validating the results through ...

Keep This Book Handy
Since buying a copy of this book last spring, I've referred to it many times to get information and moral support. It has helped me to make informed decisions about medical care and feel more relaxed about the bodily changes I'm experiencing. It's clearly written and optimistic in tone. If you don't have the opportunity to participate in the author's menopause group, it's the next best thing.

Scientifis Meditation
is a classic in it's field: an oldy, but still amazingly relevant goody. We have all heard of the fight or flight response but few have heard of the opposing, involuntary, calming response. Benson was one of the first researchers to investigate the relaxation response as a mechanism for meditation. Benson begins by giving a description of the physiology of stress and its bad effects on the ...

An ecumenical exploration and inspiration
This is a thin book of 27 chapters, each presenting a health practitioner's perspective and experience with prayer. The book is published by Toronto's Anglican Book Centre, but includes a wide variety of Christian viewpoints, medical researchers' "recovering-agnostic" thoughts, and selections from Jewish, Islamic, Buddhist, and Native practitioners. The first chapters have nice overviews of ...
