A History of the Jews in the Modern World6 reviews

Vintage, 2007

Very accurate...
I know a lot about certain aspects of Jewish history [and very little about other ones]. I found absolutely no contradiction between what Sachar writes and what I know. This rarely ever happens in books about history. I recommend this book highly to everyone, Jews and Gentiles alike although people with non-European background will probably be overwhelmed and will miss a lots of the finer ...

Dreamland: Europeans and Jews in the Aftermath of the Great War1 review

Vintage, 2007

A wonderful tour de force
This tour de force covers the oft overlooked period of 1918-1939 when Europeans democracies oen by one disappeared, overun by communism and fascism. This is the story of the Jews, but more then that it is a story of Europe, the times, the culture, the politics, the arts, and of minority rights in a continent torn by ideas. This is the essential work for the period and covers such an array of ...

Farewell Espana: The World of the Sephardim Remembered3 reviews
Howard M. Sachar

Vintage, 1995

Fantastic introduction to Sephardic History
If you are at all interested in the history of the Sephardic people this is the book to get. Sachar takes you on a journey from the plains of Al-andalus to the deserts of the Ottoman Empire, the thriving metropolis of the Dutch, to the modern state of Israel. The book is utterly readable and reads less like a dry history book and more like a novel where the central character is an entire nation. ...

The Course of Modern Jewish History5 reviews
Howard M. Sachar

Vintage, 1990

Clearly written and an excellent fundamental text
This work is a must for all persons interested in the dialectical evolution of the Jewish people. The language is simple and Sachar is wonderfully articulate and easy to read. Sachar covers a wide breadth of subtopics and countries in the social and geopolitical history of the Jewish people. While some of the criticisms in the earlier reviews may be true re: factual inconsistencies; the book ...

A History of Israel: From the Rise of Zionism to Our Time21 reviews
Howard M. Sachar

Alfred A. Knopf, 2007

A sweeping panorama of the birth of a nation
This review comments on the 2007 edition of this history and follows almost a year of intermittent reading to get through it all. I had previously used the shorter first edition almost 30 years ago in a college course and was very pleased to revisit much of the information in this third, very comprehensive and much expanded edition. As it stands today, this volume could form the primary ...

A History of the Jews in America1 review
Howard M. Sachar

Vintage, 1993

A reliable guide and reference
I found this book an excellent foundation for understanding the many faces of American Judaism. I had the opportunity to read the whole book cover to cover while recovering from an accident, and found that it fleshed out facets of the Jewish experience I had heard about elsewhere. Some of my perceptions of history were challenged, all were deepened. And I still use it as a reference.

Israel and Europe: An Appraisal in History2 reviews
Howard M. Sachar

Vintage, 2000

Another Sachar Gem!
Howard Sachar has done it again! Like his previous works, he has weaved another great tale. The book goes into detail about Israel's diplomatic efforts vis-a-vis the Europeans. The book deals with such as issues as German Reparations to Israel, European aid or lack of aid in Israel's quest for survival, the furtive German arms sales to Israel of the sixties, as well as relations with the ...

A History of Israel: Volume II: From the Aftermath of the Yom Kippur War
Howard M. Sachar

Oxford University Press, USA, 1987

A sequel to Sachar's classic History of Israel: From the Rise of Zionism to Our Time, and equally compelling in its narrative power and richness of human detail, this book begins where its predecessor left off: in the 1973 aftermath of the costliest war in Israel's history. It is a fascinating saga and Sachar tells it with the lucidity and incisiveness that have been the hallmark of his earlier writing. Here in full richness of texture is ...
