A thoughtfully reasoned testimony of Christian faith
Accessibly written by J. Philip Newell (a minister of the Church of Scotland), Echo Of The Soul: The Sacredness Of The Human Body deftly presents the idea that the human body is not an obstacle to ascending to the divine, but rather the dwelling place of God, and truly created in God's image. Echo Of The Soul is confidently recommended as a powerful and thoughtfully reasoned testimony of ...

Use of Book for Litigation Support
My firm provides litigation support services to attorneys. We found Dr. Bedient's book to be very useful both as a reference and as a means of educating our clients who typically have limited technical capabilities in the area of groundwater hydrology. The book covers a variety of topics, all in sufficient detail, I believe. It is well written and organized, for easy reference. If the authors ...

Christianity at it's best
I have long been drawn to the spiritual philosophy that was Celtic Christianity which believes that mankind is at it's core good and that the spark of God resides in all creation. After reading several good books on the subject I have to say this book was the most accessable to me. A true teacher is able to explain complex subjects in a way that a novice can understand and J. Philip Newell is ...

prayers for all people
This lovely book offers a cycle of morning and evening prayers which are not specifically Christian and which, therefore, could be used by Jews, Unitarian Universalists, or non-affiliated persons, as well as Christians. The imagry of the words is oriented to the grandeur of creation and the illustrations come from Jewish and Celtic manuscripts. The book is well-constructed, which is important ...

Deeply spiritual and open
I have other books by this author but this one is my favorite. I love the Celtic prayers. And this is more than just prayers but can be used for devotions at the beginning and end of the day. There are prayers and opportunities to read scriptures and to insert your own prayers of thanksgiving. There is also an invitation to be silent and listen to God.

A beautiful book of Celtic prayers
I was given a copy of this book several years ago and enjoyed it in personal prayer. When our Wed. morning prayer service became more contemplative this summer, I suggested that we try Celtic Benediction. The whole group has enjoyed the change-up from the standard Morning Prayer found in the Book of Common Prayer. Thanks, Phillip, for a wonderful gift!

A Trustworthy Guide For These Turbulent Times
Review of "Christ of the Celts," by J. Philip Newell, Jossey-Bass, 2008 This book is much more than an introduction to the treasures of Celtic Christianity for our time. It is a response to what the author and many others see as a deep longing for peace in the world among nations and peoples today, a longing against which are ranged forces of fear and fragmentation "that are wedded to the ...

Each Day and Each Night

The Celtic spiritual tradition is marked by the belief that what is deepest in us, beyond the distortions of ignorance or wrongdoing, is the image of God. Its second major characteristic is a trust in the essential goodness of creation, which it regards as a revelation of God, thus avoiding the pitfall of separating spirit and matter. The simple prayers of "Each Day & Each Night" are the new expressions of the old worlds and imagery of ...
