an important contribution to current topic
The behaviorist school of psychology has so dominated research for almost 60 years. Finally, the tide is beginning to turn in the opposite direction. New research is showing without doubt that humans have underestimated animals to an extreme degree. This book examines the "Umwelt" of various animals and illustrates very complex behavior, even in animals as startling different than us as the ...

First modern novel on lawyers--before Grisham!
This is a fine and thoughtful novel--good English, very important topic, very human maturing lawyer who learns that the noble citizens are too often unjust and that some of the "bad guys" often are seeking to be just. Some important passages will only be fully understood by lawyers. I had been told that Anatomy of a Murder (late 60's) was the first pre-Grisham book. It is a fine book and made a ...

Too much...WAY too much
One reviewer called "Guard of Honor" a "Dickens of a novel", and it's easy to see what he was getting at: a big book, bustling with characters and situations, covering a time and place from many angles to make a detailed portrait...that's what Charles Dickens did best, and that's what Cozzens certainly INTENDS to do, but it simply does not come off. There is just too much fat here, too many long, ...

Maps charting reasoning
Asking a lone wasp dragging a cricket across a paddock how she finds her way home won't elicit much response. Interrogating a honeybee about why she's doing this task now, while she was engaged in something entirely different a short time ago will net you little information. The Goulds, however, delve into some of the motivations behind animal behaviour. In this easily accessible volume, they ...

Thought provoking, but difficult
I had to read many of the readings from this book for my Intro to Ethics class. While it continued to stimulate my mind and make me think past what I had previously believed on many issues, I had to re-read many writings multiple times to even start to understand what was REALLY being talked about. However, when I did understand, it made the reading that much more interesting.

Honeybee behaviour
Honey bees are among the most complex of the extant protostomes, and their behavior and central nervous system has been studied in some detail. This easy to read reference describes beekeeping, the life cycle of the bees and the bee hive, communication by pheromes, communication by sound, communication by the bee's 'dance language', navigation by a sun 'compass', navigation by a polarized light ...

Memoirs of a Dutch Mudsill
This is the best Civil War account of a midwestern (Wisconsin) soldier and the day to day activities that a common soldier had to endure that I have read. It chronicles the day to day life, as well every battle from Murfreesboro, to Atlanta, to the Savannah. Written from the perspective of a common soldier rather than from the perspective of a General. It reads like a novel. Excellent!

Excellent preparation for the AP Test
This book is a treasure. I used it several years ago as a sophomore in high school to prepare for the AP Examination in Biology. Wonderfully illustrated, exceptionally written, and very easy to use! I got a "5" on the exam, which is the highest score attainable... I think that speaks for itself!

Why should sex be necessary
This reference starts off by showing that an important unsolved problem in evolutionary biology is why sex should be necessary. Sex appears to be required by most higher lifeforms. Indeed, most asexual species which exist are recent derivations from sexual species, implying that without sex a species tends to go extinct. The mechanisms of sex at the cellular level are considered. The book then ...

Great into to biostats
As long as you've had college algebra, this book should be quite helpful in figuring out stats. Every important term is well-defined, and every concept is illustrated with a data set. He starts off quite basic, introducing types of data and graphs, then moves on to introduce more involved topics, one at a time.
