Government by the People, 2001-2002 (Brief 4th Edition)9 reviews
James MacGregor Burns, David O'Brien, ...

Prentice Hall, 2001

One Book for Sister Sarah
The reflection from the light shone on the book and back on me from the shelf, as I felt another impulse purchase coming on. I reflected how I had only one political science course throughout college. Not unlike the puppy dog at the kennel that licks you through the cage, the book was saying, "Pick me." I did. My twentieth edition, hard cover copy provides everything we should know about how ...

CPM in Construction Management (Pro Engineering)1 review
James J. O'Brien, Fredric L. Plotnick

McGraw-Hill Professional, 2005

"CPM in Construction Management" - a comprehensive and practical guide for commercial building construction
The original edition of this revised book dates from the early 1980's, so predates the use of personal computers for scheduling. The careful, methodical thinking that was essential when paper and pencil or mainframe computers were the only choices, is evident in the organization and subject matter of this book. Although currently popular PC scheduling software is addressed in this edition, the ...

Dubliners (Signet Classics)106 reviews
James Joyce

Signet Classics, 2007

Great Vignettes Of Dublin Life and A Great way to introduce yourself to James Joyce
Admittedly Joyce's better known works can seem quite daunting to the uninitiated but here in these short character sketches a reader can begin to understand what all fuss is about and enjoy some wonderfully written short stories in the bargain. The stories are consistently good and from the very first where a young boy encounters the death of someone he knows for the first time the tales and ...

Virginia Bruce - Under My Skin2 reviews
Scott O'Brien

BearManor Media, 2008

An excellent biography of a glamorous film actress
I thoroughly enjoyed Scott O'Brien's biography of Kay Francis (Kay Francis: I Can't Wait to Be Forgotten) and eagerly awaited his next book - a biography of another glamorous motion picture actress of the 1930's, Virginia Bruce. I'm happy to report that this volume is as fascinating as his first. Like Francis, Bruce is not as well known today as some of her contemporaries such as Bette Davis ...

Harnessing Hibernate6 reviews
James Elliott, Tim O'Brien, ...

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2008

Harness Hibernate... fast
Harnessing Hibernate is a fine book, which uses the most efficient ways to achieve its goal. Though focusing on Hibernate, the book enlists the usage of various frameworks such as Spring Framework, Stripes and Maven. Part I: Hibernate in a hurry: The core Build: The book starts with how you should build which used to be a dread. The authors choose to use Ant - Maven task, which is cool. ...

James A. O'Brien

McGraw-Hill/Irwin, 2003

Informative book that details the mgmt of the tech field
The book was expensive to start, but you start reading this book, you find that the money is worth it. The author does a great deal to explain terms and gives company examples and great review sections.

Crackling Mountain and Other Stories2 reviews
Osamu Dazai, James O'Brien

Tuttle Publishing, 1989

Dazed and Delighted by a Different Dazai
If you've read "Setting Sun" or "No Longer Human" by Dazai and think you've got him pigeon-holed, read this fine collection of his short stories and think again. This is Dazai in a very different key. While the darkness and nihilism characterizing his better known novels still hovers around in the background in these tales, overall they sparkle with a sharp and sprightly sense of irony, satire, ...

Confessions of a 'Sixties Priest: But Probably Not What You're Thinking!5 reviews
James M O'Brien

iUniverse, Inc., 2008

The Unmaking of a Priest
In CONFESSIONS OF A SIXTIES PRIEST, the second volume of James O'Brien's memoirs, we see how a young, idealistic priest loses his vocation and his faith in his first decade out of the seminary. O'Brien's movement away from the Church probably would have occurred anyway, but since the decade in question was the 1960s, his re-examination of his life and his resolve to make radical changes in it ...

Government by the People, Basic Version, 20th Edition6 reviews
James MacGregor Burns, J.W. Peltason, ...

Prentice Hall, 2003

Not to worry---it's fine
Apparently, the Fox Noise machine has cranked out a lot of negative reviews on Burns here. But ignore all that. The book is fine and well-balanced. Burns has long been a first-rate historian and political scientist and there's no reason to doubt that now. The negative reviews are from the Karl Rove crowd.

Government by the People, Teaching and Learning, Classroom Edition (6th Edition)1 review
David B. Magleby, David M. O'Brien, ...

Prentice Hall, 2005

A scatterbrained book.
While I only took Texas Government as it is required to graduate, my professor required me buy this book, ostensibly as a favor to his friend, the author. This is not a good textbook. While I did learn about Texas government, the materials for the chapters are interspersed and requires a great deal of searching to find. Additionally, much of the information presented in this book is irrelevant ...

Management Information Systems2 reviews
James A. O'Brien, George Marakas

McGraw-Hill/Irwin, 2005

Needlessly wordy and long winded
While O'Brien seems to really know his stuff, and the book covers a vast array of material, it's just too darn wordy. His sentence structure, and word usage are awkward. Many of the terms he uses are NEEDLESSLY large and difficult to understand. He uses terms like 'tactical planning', 'proactive and interactive', and the like with out even explaining what he means. Many of his sentences have ...

Making a Priest in the Fifties: Memoir of a Nervous Seminarian4 reviews
James M O'Brien

iUniverse, Inc., 2006

Clear and concise
Reviewed by William E. Cooper for Reader Views (11/06) Although a unique subject, this really is a great book to read. As a life-long Catholic, and one who actually aspired to the priesthood in my youth, I've often wondered what it would have been like to attend the seminary. James O'Brien fully answers all the questions I had, and does it well. He writes clearly and concisely, at the same ...
