My Life and Hard Times (Perennial Classics)24 reviews
James Thurber

Harper Perennial Modern Classics, 1999

Talent Like This is Rare
Thurber's classic about growing up in Columbus, Ohio is laugh out loud funny, even 80 years removed. Talent like this is rare. He deserves his literary reputation.

Fables for Our Time (Harper Colophon Books, Cn/999)4 reviews
James Thurber

Harper Perennial, 1983

"early to rise and early to bed...
...makes a man healthy, wealthy and dead." Quoting one of the fables; I remember reading this book thirty years ago. It is superb. The pictures are excellent too. I can still recall the man leaping down into the lion's pit to get the lady's glove, also the pictures of birds (shrikes, I think). I'll buy this one right away, my daughter will love it.

Many Moons (A Harcourt Brace Contemporary Classic)24 reviews
James Thurber

Voyager Books, 1998

A Non-Jesting Jester?
The princess wanted the moon. Her father, the king, demanded it be gotten for her. As you can imagine, this causes problems for the king's servants. The Royal Wizard, Mathematician and the Lord High Chamberlain have done many near-impossible feats for the king--but getting the moon? It's out of the question! But the Royal Court Jester thinks not. (Is this another one of his jokes?) A funny ...

The 13 Clocks37 reviews
James Thurber

NYR Children's Collection, 2008

Killing time; or thirteen frozen clocks
James Thurber went to Bermuda to finish a book, and wrote The Thirteen Clocks instead. He says it was escapism and self-indulgence. If so, the world needs more self-indulgence, because this book is pure fun. It's a simple fairy tale, a book to be shared with a child. The water-color illustrations by Mark Simont are a perfect enhancement to the mood of the story. The tale opens with an evil ...

Thurber: Writings and Drawings (Library of America)7 reviews
James Thurber

Library of America, 1996

One of the best kept secrets of American Literature!
I've often thought that Thurber doesn't get the credit today that he deserves as a writer. This is probably because his works are not "deep" in terms of meaning or content. His mastery of language, though,is superb, and his stories are some of the most hilarious and best written I have ever read. I can read many of them over and over and still laugh out loud! His cartoons are clever as ...

The Wonderful O6 reviews
James Thurber

NYR Children's Collection, 2009

Oh, no -- no O
Pirates come to plunder a small island. When the spokesman tells them they have no treasure "except the blue of the water and the pink of our maidens' cheeks and lips, and the green of our fields," the pirates don't believe them and search high and low. Meanwhile, the captain of the ship, who hates the letter O, issues an edict. "I'll get rid of the letter O, in upper case and lower...All words ...

The Thurber Carnival (Perennial Classics)13 reviews
James Thurber

Harper Perennial Modern Classics, 1999

THURBER!!!!
The works and cartoons of James Thurber have had quite an influence on me over the years. At a very young age I was drawn to his cartoons (pardon the pun), and as I grew older developed a great appreciation of his writings. Decades after their inception, his works ring true.

My World-and Welcome to It (Harvest Book)4 reviews
James Thurber

Harvest Books, 1969

Constant Companion
This collection of short essays and stories is marvellous. I have carried it with me on every trip I have taken since I first read it. I have my grandfather's copy, which has been on a longtime loan (say, ten years...) I am fondest of the essays, which range from clever little tirades against the Telephone Company and the Motor Vehicle Bureau to accounts and commentaries on Thurber's travels in ...

Is Sex Necessary?: Or Why You Feel the Way You Do3 reviews
James Thurber, E. B. White

Harper Perennial, 2004

What a romp!
Thurber's and White's text satirizing the hullabaloo that our dearest lunatic, Mr. Sigmund Freud, began takes whatever cake is being handed out for satirical writing. It's universally funny, lucid, and did I mention funny? It's hilarious. One should pull out one's thesaurus at this point to find other such words, and all will be a propos. The book should have been a trilogy.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and Other Pieces (Penguin Modern Classics)4 reviews
James Thurber

Penguin Classics, 2000

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is the best book i have ever read.
Anyone you buy it for will absolutly love it. Children, teenagers, and even adults should read this book. It makes you want to jump in to one of Walter's day dreams the moment you read it. Thurber really out did him self. I have to say it is one of the funniest books i have ever read.

The White Deer5 reviews
James Thurber

Harvest Books, 1968

Excellent little fairy tale
This is the first time that I have read any of Mr. Thurber's writing, and I must say that I am rather impressed. This is a pleasant story about a strong, but not very wise, king and his three sons who are sent on quests to win a beautiful princess (who may or may not actually be a deer). It is a book that makes serious points through a story that is often tremendously silly. Mr. Thurber's ...

The Great Quillow4 reviews
James Thurber

Harcourt Children's Books, 1994

Wonderful story for ALL ages.
Marvelous illustrations. Great story about how brains can win out over braun. The Great Quillow is a character to be admired. Told with humor and feeling. I purchased my own copy to keep. One of the best.

Old Dogs Remembered9 reviews
Eugene O'Neill, James Thurber, ...

Synergistic Publications, 1999

Who can forget?
Old Dogs Remembered is a wonderful collection that reflects on the joy of being owned by a dog and being the object of unquestioning devotion. While it is the collected remembrances and obituaries for famous people's dogs long past, it also focuses the reader on the dogs in our lives now. Our dogs pass away, but we have the power to make sure they are remembered. Take a minute to reflect on ...

The Years with Ross (Perennial Classics)5 reviews
James Thurber

Harper Perennial Modern Classics, 2001

How He Was
Thurber got into trouble with his friend and co-New Yorker stalwart E.B. White for writing this portrait of their boss and benefactor. Between them the three wrote most of "The New Yorker" in its crucial first decades. These chapters, first written as a series of articles for "The Atlantic", are a model of the rich, primary source biography. Thurber pulls no punches. His Ross is not "a monument" ...
