How to Work with the Media (Survival Skills for Scholars)1 review
James Alan Fox, Jack Levin

Sage Publications, Inc, 1993

Sound Advice
If you want to get favorable media coverage, read this book. These two professors describe how to get a wider audience for your ideas. They have the credentials. In the back of the book there's a summary sheet on each one telling the extensive media coverage they're received, locally, regionally, and nationally. They argue that one's academic credibility is enhanced by media coverage. But, in ...

Of the many books writen on the topic of Homicide, THE WILL TO KILL is unique in that it covers the topic from a perspective that is interesting to the casual true crime fan and yet is an invaluable resource to the serious professional who delves into the grisly world of murder. Levin & Fox have produced several serious works on the topic of homicide and all reflect the fact that the authors are ...

Student Lab Manual for Elementary Statistics in Social Research: The Essentials3 reviews
Jack A. Levin, James Alan Fox

Allyn & Bacon, 2006

Jack Levin, Elementary statistics in Social research
One of the best statistics books I can think of for social scientists who are not well aquainted with statistical procedures. The book is structured in several chapters, each concentrating on one statistical problem. In the first part of each chapter the theoretical background is given, followed by examples. Then, other examples are given, so that it becomes easily understandable how to ...

Extreme Killing: Understanding Serial and Mass Murder1 review
James Alan Fox, Jack Levin

Sage Publications, Inc, 2005

Why quote James Dobson as a source?
Fox and Levin are leading authors in the field of criminolgy. Jack Levin's books on hate crimes are among the best academic work on the subject and I assign them to my students. That's why I was surprised at the non-academic tone of this book. It utilizes some research but reads more like a true-crime book, full of all the gory (and super-gory) details. It's too much to ask students to read ...

Randomized Response: A Method for Sensitive Surveys (Quantitative Applications in the Social Sciences)
James Alan Fox, Paul E. Tracy

Sage Publications, Inc, 1986

Randomized Response is an approach to survey data collection specifically designed for sensitive inquiries. The logic underlying this approach is that the element of chance sufficiently clouds a response so as to protect the respondent when disclosing personal or sensitive data. This book is the first comprehensive introduction and practical guide to randomized response for researchers wishing to use this technique.

Overkill1 review
James Alan Fox, Jack Levin

Dell, 1996

Garbage In, Garbage Out
This book speculates far more than good authors should do, especially dealing in the mind-boggling world of the serial killer. They are horribly wrong about the extent of Henry Lee Lucas' crimes (the numbers) and seem to know little about Ted Bundy that doesn't come from either Bob Keppel, Hugh Aynesworth or Stephen Michaud. Would love to see some original research.
