Shogun305 reviews
James Clavell

Dell, 1976

A Classic Epic of Breathtaking Scope
Every two or three years, I have brought out Shogun and reread it which now amounts to about twelve times. Every time, the book takes on new dimensions and tones. The story of John Blackthorne, a Dutch seafarer who makes it across the Pacific to the Japans, is an enthralling and embracing story. One of the most engrossing elements of the story is Blackthorne's struggle with Japan's language and ...

King Rat83 reviews
James Clavell

Dell, 1986

King Clavell
This is a brilliant work. I was fully vested in each and every character. Whether or not you like the populace of this prison camp, if you sympathize with the honest or the desperate, you will care about the men portrayed in this effort. Even the Japanese guards are well rendered and have substance. Read it!

Gai-Jin69 reviews
James Clavell

Dell, 1994

Good Read
Aside a few mistakes (contradictions with earlier novels, such as the mention of May-May being Gordon Chen's mother when in Tai-Pan, she was not, among other things), this was a decent read. Like Tai-Pan, this plodded in some places. In my opinion, Shogun remains the best of the lot - though I have yet to read King Rat and Noble House. I am reading them in the order that the books were set in, ...

Tai Pan (Coronet Books)85 reviews
James Clavell

Hodder & Stoughton Ltd, 1994

Fantastical good in spite of the fact I didn't really enjoy reading it
Shogun was kind of an odd book for me because even though I loved it, really loved, I didn't really enjoy reading it. The same thing happened with "Tai-Pan." This is a highly political and informative novel about the opium-tea-silver trade and the beginnings of British Hong Kong but it's more tedious somehow because there is so much conversation compared to the action parts of the book and the ...

James Clavell's Whirlwind32 reviews
James Clavell

Contemporary Books, 1988

The 21st Century began in 1979
I first read Whirlwind when the hardback appeared in 1986. Although a great admirer of Clavell's work, I found it tough going. The memory of the 1979 Iranian hostage was still fresh, and it just rankled. Others apparantly felt the same way, for sales for the book were disappointing. It is the only Clavell novel not currently in print. Although I reread other Clavell works from time to time, I did ...

The Art of War280 reviews
Sun Tzu

Delta, 1989

Not just for generals
This is a book of strategy for psychological warfare--it helps you tackle the battles you face every day. One of the biggest themes is how to win a fight *before* it actually starts. If only our current government and military leaders had followed the wisdom of "The Art of War"...

Noble House74 reviews
James Clavell

Contemporary Books, 1988

A MASTERPIECE WORTHY OF THE TAIPAN!
James Clavell was a WONDERFUL Writer (yes, with a capital W) and NOBLE HOUSE was a gift he left to us! Through his eyes we visit Hong Kong in the 1970's. Clavell, like a virtuoso connaisseur of the human condition he is, manages to interweave a multitude of stories into a continuous carpet of a city living fast, taking risks, winning and loosing but never giving up. Heads of huge ...

The Children's Story...33 reviews
James Clavell

Coronet, 1983

Chilling and plausible
I first saw a "real time" teleplay of this back in the early 80's before I ever started having children, and made it a point to get a copy of the book when I was only 17. It was obviously written during the Cold War, but it's easy to see the parallel to events of today, unless a person is in complete denial. It's chilling and frightening, and should raise the awareness of anyone with children ...

Escape4 reviews
James Clavell

Hodder And Stoughton, 1995

Great masterpiece
This book is really marvellous. Once you start reading, you can't put it down. For the persons who have read 'whirlwind', this will add more pleasure to that novel. It provides more information to one of the acts in that novel. Mr Clavell is master writer who studies the subject well and then weaves it well. All of his books have been quite informative, educative and absorbing. I wish, ...

Thrump-O-Moto4 reviews
James Clavell

Delacorte Press, 1986

A richly illustrated, magnificent fantasy for all ages..
Clavell's Thrump-O-Moto is nothing short of a literary masterpiece. This fantasy begins with a lazy rural afternoon and leaps across continents and through time warps with a most informal and personal accessibility. The possibilities of friendship, the comparison of cultures, and the thrill of adventure all contribute to create a most fantastic story. The illustrations supplement the ...

Shogun: A Novel of Japan7 reviews
James Clavell

Hodder Paperback, 1999

THE MASTERPIECE THAT POPULARIZED MEDIEVAL JAPAN TO THE WEST!
This is the novel that introduced the Samurai's bushido, daimyos rivalries and the bakufu Shogunate to the average westerner. Through the eyes of a shipwrecked navigator, Blackthorn, a previously hermetically closed world is revealed. From battle ethics and sepuku to hygiene and tea ceremonies, the interwoven narrative lines flow harmonically, like carps in a Zen rock garden pool. Beautiful, ...
