Arrested Adulthood: The Changing Nature of Maturity and Identity
1 review
James Cote
NYU Press
, 2000
If the Shoe Fits
People who read Arrested Adulthood could almost accuse Cote of being a conspiracy theorist--if he didn't state his case so convincingly. He argues that not only have traditional models and definitions of adulthood gone by the wayside, but they have been replaced by a new model (or perhaps non-model) which threatens to create a society in which clinical narcissism is the norm, not an aberration. ...
Adolescent Storm and Stress: An Evaluation of the Mead-freeman Controversy (Research Monographs in ...
James E. Cote
Lawrence Erlbaum
, 1994
This work addresses the controversy surrounding Margaret Mead's 1928 book, "Coming of Age in Samoa" in which she described adolescence in Samoa as virtually stress-free. This was attacked in 1983 by Australian anthropologist, Derek Freeman, since which a great deal attention has been paid to the controversy and the subject of adolescent "storm and stress". This book provides an interdisciplinary analysis of Freeman's criticisms and an assessment ...

it really makes you think
I've been reading this book for my sociology class and it has been an eye opening experience. The authors offer easily understandable arguements that really make the reader think. Although their arguements are often a bit conspiritorial it is a good resource and can lead to some great discussion.

The goal of Identity, Formation, Agency, and Culture is to lay the basis of a theory with which to better understand the difficulties and complexities of identity formation. It provides an extensive understanding of identity formation as it relates to human striving (agency) and social organization (culture). James E. Côté and Charles G. Levine have compiled state-of-the-art psychological and sociological theory and research into a concise ...
IDENTITY: An International Journal of Theory and Research
James E. Cote
Lawrence Erlbaum Associates
, 2005
This special issue originated in a symposium held at the 2003 Meetings of the Society for Research on Identity Formation that focused on the postmodernist critique of the developmental approach to identity. It invites scholars to evaluate the merits of Rattansi and Phoenix's arguments. The intention is to look for both areas of common ground and areas where there might be a collegial "agreement to disagree." Readers see that several stand back ...
Linking Industry And Ecology: A Question of Design (Sustainability and the Environment Series)
UBC Press
, 2006
"Linking Industry and Ecology" explores the origins, promise, and relevance of the emerging field of industrial ecology. Its aims are threefold. First, it reminds us that humans, their products, their industries, and their communities draw resources from and discard waste back into the same biophysical environment, often at unsustainable rates. Thus, it serves to educate people about the nature of the emerging concept and field of industrial ...

James E. Côté
,
Anton L. Allahar
University of Toronto Press
, 2007
The present state of the university is a difficult issue to comprehend for anyone outside of the education system. If we are to believe common government reports that changes in policy are somehow making life easier for university graduates, we cannot help but believe that things are going right and are getting better in our universities. Ivory Tower Blues gives a decidedly different picture, examining this optimistic attitude as it impacts ...

Anton Allahar
,
James E. Côté
