One extraordinary read...
James Herriot writes of his veterinary experiences as no one else could. Full of humor, sometimes sadness but always spellbinding and interesting. I could not put this book down.

All Things Bright and Beautiful28 reviews
James Herriot

St. Martin's Paperbacks, 1998

Delightful and charming...
All Things Bright and Beautiful by James Herriot is a true classic and I can see why it has been such a big seller through many decades. Sadly, I missed seeing his books when they were made into a television series. This autobiographical work is charming and delightful. Jim Herriot was a vet in Yorkshire, England. He was pretty much a country veterinarian, servicing farm animals for most ...

James Herriot's Treasury for Children: Warm and Joyful Animal Tales1 review
James Herriot

Macmillan Young Listeners, 2008

This completes my James Herriot collection!
Born an animal lover, I read James Herriot's first four books in the 70's from middle through high school in Taiwan. Yes, Those books were translated into Chinese and James Herriot was quite popular among book lovers there. I came to the United States in 1987 and since then, I bought and re-read all his books in English. I discovered so many aspects of his writing could not be precisely ...

All Creatures Great and Small3 reviews
James Herriot

St. Martin's Griffin, 2004

Everything "Great" (and sometimes small)
If you ever wanted to be a vet... "All Creatures Great and Small" will either inspire, or send you running off to be a lawyer. Heartwarming, funny, sad and highly educational, James Herriot's debut biography (he wrote five in all) give readers the whole messy, glorious picture of being a 1940s country veterinarian. The book opens (after a brief chapter taking place several months later) with ...

James Herriot

St. Martin's Press, 1992

A Gorgeous Book
This is a great example of a living book. The stories transport the listener to another place, and the journey is a pleasure. My 5 and 8 year old daughters love these stories and their illustrations.

All Things Wise and Wonderful16 reviews
James Herriot

St. Martin's Paperbacks, 1998

Definitely a classic
The third book in the series and you know exactly what to expect. Yes, folks, it is every bit as entertaining as the first two, and that's probably all you need to know. But I'll go ahead and mention that he spends some time in the RAF during World War II, which we knew he would as the second book ended. I'll also mention that he and Helen have a baby, which you probably expected. One of the ...

The James Herriot Collection6 reviews
James Herriot

Macmillan Audio, 2006

James Herriot Collection
Years ago, after reading the books, I never missed an episode of the NPR sponsered TV program on Channel 6 in Sacramento, CA. In the early '90's, my son (USAF) and family were sent to England and my husband and I had the wonderful opportunity to visit there and actually toured the Yorkshire dales and countryside. We were able to visit the real home of this wonderful veterinarian and the one ...

Vet in a Spin
James Herriot

Pan Macmillan, 2006

James Herriot, strapped into the cockpit of a Tiger Moth trainer, feels rather out of place, but he hasnt found a new profession and it surely wont be long before the RAF come round to his point of view. James Herriots sixth volume of unforgettable memoirs sees him dreaming of the day when he can rejoin his wife Helen, little son Jimmy, veterinary partner Siegfried, the eternal student Tristan, and all the old Darrowby crows, both two-legged and ...

Vets Might Fly

RAF training proves tough for Jamesbut you cant keep a good vet down. A few months of married bliss, a lovers nest in Darrowby and the wonders of home cooking are rudely interrupted for James Herriot by the Second World War. James Herriots fifth volume of memoirs relocates him to a training camp somewhere in England. Every Living Thing23 reviews
James Herriot

St. Martin's Griffin, 2005

Reading to feel good.
I have just finished this book after having read the other books in the series many years ago. The magic is still there. I would not ordinarily be attracted to a book of animal stories but the animals in Dr. Herriot's practice are a stage for something more. The author gives the reader a slice of life from a different time and a different place (Yorkshire). I was quickly enamored with the ...

It Shouldn't Happen to a Vet1 review
James Herriot

Pan Macmillan, 2006

It Shouldn't happen to a vet
It was the first James Herriot book I read, and I think the best. It was funny at times and serious at others. It introduced me to a English Countryside vet's life. Sqeamish people might want to skip over parts. (He is a vet!) But over all, I really think this book is a wonderful must read.

James Herriot's Yorkshire: A Guided Tour With the Beloved Veterinarian Through the Land of All Creatures ...12 reviews
James Herriot

St. Martin's Griffin, 1981

Probably terrific in hardcover
I put five stars here because I'm sure the hardcover edition rates it. I thought I was ordering hardcover, but got a very cheap paperback instead. This is a book that NEEDS big pages and color pictures; forget about the paperback edition. I tossed it.

The Best of James Herriot: Favourite Memories of a Country Vet11 reviews
James Herriot

St. Martin's Press, 1998

A Must Buy!
What can one add to the already vivid detail of the life of Alfred Wight? Fortunately nothing except the illustrations for those of us with little perception of what the farming community and the towns around Yorkshire were like in the 30's and 40's. The fact too, that it's in hardcover will ensure it's permanent place on your bookshelf of treasured writings.

The Lord God Made Them All

The Lord God Made Them All2 reviews
James Herriot

Macmillan Audio, 2005

Reviewing The Lord God Made Them All
I ordered the audio version, which I really enjoyed listening to, especially with British (Yorkshire) accent of the actor. I have always enjoyed the James Herriot books, except for his free use of profanity. Otherwise, it was very enjoyable listening.
