Pegasus Descending: A Dave Robicheaux Novel (Dave Robicheaux)105 reviews
James Lee Burke

Pocket Star, 2007

Burke is simply one of the best writers around
Mr. Burke's use of language, the descriptions of his characters and settings are remarkable. And, most importantly, a joy to read.

A Morning for Flamingos26 reviews
James Lee Burke

Avon, 1991

First in Robicheaux series
This is truly one of the best books I've ever read by a contemporary author. I found the plot line to be involving and interesting and was really committed to the character development of the main character as well as those around him. The book was recomended to me by my brother-in-law who thought if I liked it, I'd go on to read the series. I've ordered them and look forward to seeing how ...

Common Sense Economics: What Everyone Should Know About Wealth and Prosperity13 reviews
James Gwartney, Richard L. Stroup, ...

St. Martin's Press, 2005

Should be required reading for voters
I've read several of the economics books meant for a general audience. Overall, I'd say this one is the best, edging out Thomas Sowell's Basic Economics 3rd Ed: A Common Sense Guide to the Economy. Common Sense Economics is particularly strong when it discusses the ways in which various government policies make us poorer.

Crusader's Cross: A Dave Robicheaux Novel (Dave Robicheaux Mysteries)104 reviews
James Lee Burke

Pocket, 2006

Burke never disappoints....
There are a lot of good mystery writers out there and there's even a decent number of great ones, but there's only a few that are the true elite. In times past, you could include Raymond Chandler, Ross MacDonald and James MacDonald among this group. Nowadays, you have writers like Michael Connelly, Elmore Leonard, Dennis Lehane and James Ellroy. James Lee Burke is also in this select group and ...

The Neon Rain: A Dave Robicheaux Novel28 reviews
James Lee Burke

Pocket, 2002

Short book, but jam-packed story!
This is the first book in the James Lee Burke series with Detective Dave Robicheaux. Takes place in New Orleans, reads like a Dashiell Hammett or Raymond Chandler story - old fashioned, hard-boiled detective story. Rich in characters and a sense of Louisiana. Doesn't take long to read, but I highly recommend it!!

Global Politics 9th Edition2 reviews
James Lee Ray, Juliet Kaarbo

Houghton Mifflin Company, 2007

Wonderful book
The book is really good, and I love it. Only problem - it's soft cover + covers the issues in mostly the general sense, and I want some more specifics on the issues... I heartily recommend the book.

Swan Peak: A Dave Robicheaux Novel51 reviews
James Lee Burke

Simon & Schuster, 2008

A home run for Burke and Hammer
I prefer to listen to Burke's Robicheax books because Mark Hammer is an excellent reader. He has that Cajun Louisiana accent down pat. Also, he is an expert reading that snappy wise guy dialogue the Burke writes so well. It breaks my heart that this will be the last team effort for Burke and Hammer as Mark Hammer died earlier this year. And now to Burke. Like many other reviewers I have read ...

Heaven's Prisoners24 reviews
James Lee Burke

Pocket, 2002

Heaven's Prisoners by James Lee Burke
I ordered Heaven's Prisoners by James Lee Burke on July 15th, 2008 using "Standard" delivery and received the book on July 17th!! I know this is "uncommon", but I was pleasantly surprised. The book was in great condition with only "typical" paperback "aging" coloring. I was extremely satisfied with my purchase and will, most definitely, buy again from Amazon.com!

The Tin Roof Blowdown131 reviews
James Lee Burke

Phoenix, 2008

Gotta love Dave!
When Katrina hit, I knew I wanted Dave's view on what was happening. He always cuts through the bs to give the story the way it happens to real people. Good weaving of actual events with the mystery (as always)!

Black Cherry Blues: A Dave Robicheaux Novel44 reviews
James Lee Burke

Avon, 1990

A thoroughly gripping mystery
[***** = breathtaking, **** = excellent, *** = good, ** = flawed, * = bad] I'm not a worshipful fan of every single thing that Burke writes, but I found Black Cherry Blues one of his best. Robicheaux gets framed on a murder charge, and once he's out on bail, he must travel to Montana to investigate an illegal Mafia take-over of tribal lands that, in a complicated way, pertains to his murder ...

In the Electric Mist with Confederate Dead41 reviews
James Lee Burke

Avon, 1994

Haunting, modern, violent Louisiana Gothic.....Ex-cellent....
If you know already know the writings of J.L.B., then I need say no more. If you don't, but have a decent vocabulary and think you might enjoy some action packed stories with a sense of melancholy, a violent (yet literary and well meaning) narrator, and tales of vicious crimes, punishment(and usually, revenge of some sort), set amidst the the jails and mean steets of New Orleans, and the ...

Cadillac Jukebox (Dave Robicheaux Mysteries)31 reviews
James Lee Burke

Hyperion, 1997

Lousiana Mobsters!
I really enjoyed this book. The mobsters are so well discribed and play into the plot. The mix of the southern artistocrats and the dirty underworld makes this a fun read.

Purple Cane Road96 reviews
James Lee Burke

Dell, 2001

audio
I have been listening to this book for a few days on my way to work. The writing is just as others have said; almost poetic. Beautifully visual. The reading by Bill Patton is amazing. I want to send a fan letter for the first time in my life! If you travel a lot, this is the book to listen to. I would love to read the un-abridged book.

Making Communicative Language Teaching Happen5 reviews
James F. Lee, Bill VanPatten, ...

McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages, 2003

Has made me rethink my teaching of language
I recently returned to teaching Spanish after several years of teaching English composition. So far during this first year back I've had many moments of frustration in teaching grammar and conjugations despite knowing that the kids were only learning it for a test/quiz and would not remember it much longer than that. What's the point? Lee and VanPatten's book should be required reading for all ...

Jolie Blon's Bounce88 reviews
James Lee Burke, James Burke

Pocket Star, 2003

Have you ever been to New Iberia?
I haven't been there physically, but James Lee Burke does a masterful job in placing you in the story. You can feel the heat while watching lightening flash across the night's sky. Your skin crawls with desperation of a depressed area. Your heart races with disgust as you are faced with one literature's most vile villains. Very good read and very smooth prose. James A. Forrest - Eye of the ...

Sunset Limited (Dave Robicheaux Mysteries)49 reviews
James Lee Burke

Island Books, 1999

That's Why I Read His Books
Many comment on James Lee Burkes character, Dave Robicheaux's detailed discriptions of Louisiana's beauty and that they think he goes too far.....NOT ME! This is what I look for in a book. I want to see and feel what this writer sees and feels about this beautiful southern state. Don't stop! It took me a long time to find you and now, I can't get enough.

Last Car to Elysian Fields: A Dave Robicheaux Novel58 reviews
James Lee Burke

Pocket Star, 2004

Dave Robicheaux - Yea!
This series is a winner throughout. Read it sequentially - check the copyright dates or get a dated list from your local bookstore or library. It is equally, if not more so sometimes, to listen to this series on audiobook, because the readers, Mike Hammer or Will Patton, capture not only Burke's words and thoughts but also the "accent." In a series like this, the accent is as important as ...

Burning Angel (Dave Robicheaux Mysteries)25 reviews
James Lee Burke

Hyperion, 1996

James Lee Burke's Trip to the Dark Side
The Dave Robicheaux novels by James Lee Burke have always had a spiritual component --see IN THE ELECTRIC MIST WITH CONFEDERATE DEAD-- but in BURNING ANGEL the supernatural darn near takes center stage with the presence of a real, honest-to-gosh no-doubt-about-it ghost. I loved the series before...now I'm really hooked.

Dixie City Jam23 reviews
James Lee Burke

Hyperion, 1995

Another Winner
Burke can do no harm with this series. All additions are wonderful and dark and thoughtful and memorable. See my review of his Crusader's Cross for a general picture.

¿Sabias que...? Fourth Edition Prepack9 reviews
Bill VanPatten, James F. Lee, ...

McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages, 2003

Good visuals, easy pace
I used Sabias Que my junior and senior years of college, and thought it was a very good textbook. There are lots of articles, interviews, photos, paintings and essays about Latin culture. The book, and accompanying workbook, take an easy pace, and the vocabulary (as well as verb conjugation) is provided in easy-to-use charts. I recommed this to anyone interested in learning Spanish.
