Coat of Arms7 reviews
Catherine Daly-Weir

Topeka Bindery, 2000

Hear Ye! Hear Ye!
Catherine Daly-Weir has done an excellent job of presenting a general and yet fairly complete introduction to Heraldry. The illustrations are beautiful and attractive. Obviusly written for the younger reader, adults will enjoy just as well. If you are working on a club/class project and need to creat a Coat of Arms, this book and Rosemary Chorzempa's "Design Your Own Coat of Arms" are all you ...

Sir Small and the Dragonfly4 reviews
Jane O'Connor

Demco Media, 1988

A Wonderful starter book!
Though the book is listed as being for ages 4-8, we bought the book for my then 2-year-old son and it quickly became his favorite bedtime book. The story is adorable, as are the illustrations - and it's overriding message that it's okay to be different and that it's what's inside that counts - is very happy and positive. Even before he can actually read the words, my son has memorized the ...

Nina, Nina Star Ballerina (All Aboard Reading Series)4 reviews
Jane O'Connor, DyAnne DiSalvo-Ryan

Grosset & Dunlap, 1997

It's my grand daughter's favorite
This book illustrates how one might get trapped in an untruthful situation. Nina's friends think she is the star of the show when she is only one of several dancers portraying stars. She allows them to think she's the star because she likes the attention. When there is the possibility that one of her friends will attend the performance, Nina has second thought about the deception. She ...

Nina, Nina, and the Copycat Ballerina (All Aboard Reading)2 reviews
Jane O'Connor

Grosset & Dunlap, 2000

Denise's Review of Nina, Nina, and the Copycat Ballerina
I personally thought that this book would be great for the little girl who is in ballet school herself, and might have the same problem with one of the girls in her own class. This book can also be great for the little girl whose mother wants to widen her experiences by introducing her to the world of the arts. This book is a Level 1 book for Preschool-Grade 1, which means that it has very ...

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Gardening (Complete Idiot's Guide to)2 reviews
Emma Sweeny, Jane O'Connor

MacMillan Publishing Company, 1997

Good Basic Gardening Book Even for Those Already Gardening
A friend bought me this book as a joke but I read it and found it very good. I have been a gardener my whole life but it is still a nice read and can teach even the gardener a few new techniques. It has a very nice list of very easy to care for plants great for those that are beginners and afraid of killing everything.

Fancy Nancy159 reviews
Jane O'connor

HarperCollins, 2005

Wonderful!!!
This book is adorable especially for little girls who like to dress up and look fancy. The story is heart warming and funny but in the end, it teaches about love and family. Nancy's search for way to sound fancier also teaches children wonderful new vocabulary words(sometime in French as well).

Dragon Breath4 reviews
Jane O'Connor

Perfection Learning Prebound, 1998

Get them reading!
I could not believe my 7-year-old son's reaction to this book. We've read a lot of books together, but I've never seen him act like this before. I read Dragon Breath to him. Then, for the FIRST time ever, he picked it up and read it himself. Again and again! I loved seeing the beginning of a love for reading. Now if I can just find other books that he loves as much...

Fancy Nancy and the Boy from Paris (I Can Read Book 1)11 reviews
Jane O'connor

HarperTrophy, 2008

Marvelous (fancy for great) & hilarious (fancy for so funny)!
Really enjoyed this one, possibly the best of Nancy for us (--this is our third Nancy-book). I was surprised to find the Nancy stories so enjoyable. Was pleasantly surprised too to find this as a reader, and it has great story. My girls both like these (& this one), my non-fancy Tom-boy and my girl who likes to tell me that she likes girly stuff and boys stuff too! "I like Efry-ding!"

My almost 7 year old really loves this book, even after having it for more than 2 years because: * it has many different stories/chapters * it's not too complicated to read * she can relate to the stories * she doesn't get bored of reading the same stories over and over If you're reading this review, definitely BUY it.

The Emperor's Silent Army: Terracotta Warriors of Ancient China3 reviews
Jane O'Connor

Viking Juvenile, 2002

Hidden arrows, Poisoned King, and Buried Treasure!
Rich with exciting historical details, The Emperor's Silent Army: Terracotta Warriors of Ancient China by Jane O'Connor offers a well-researched book that tantalizes the reader with tales of a poisoned King, a camouflaged dead body, and a booby-trapped tomb. The targeted audience of ages 9-12 will thrill with the adventure while simultaneously profiting from their newfound knowledge of China's ...

Spot Goes Splash! and Other Stories2 reviews
Eric Hill

Topeka Bindery, 2000

A fun book!
I bought this book when my son was 6 months old. From the first reading, it's been one of his favorites. We started just pointing and naming objects: flowers, ball, house, etc. More than a year later, we're still reading it, but now we're counting the flowers, describing the ball's shape or the house's color, etc. It's proved to be versatile. The simple, yet pleasing, pictures of Spot ...

If the Walls Could Talk: Family Life at the White House1 review
Jane O'Connor

Simon & Schuster/Paula Wiseman Books, 2004

A Lighthearted Look at the First Families
Interesting, amusing and remarkably well illustrated, the book was of interest to both my nine year old and my four year old. I must to admit to having learned a thing or two myself.

The Teeny Tiny Woman2 reviews
Jane O'Connor

Demco Media, 1986

A great beginning reader book.
This is a story of a teeny tiny woman who finds a bone to make some soup. She is haunted by a ghost who wants the bone back. This is a great book for a child learning to read. This is my daughter's favorite Step into Reading book.

The Care Bears' Party Cookbook1 review
Jane O'Connor

Random House Books for Young Readers, 1985

No Cooking!!!
I remeber this cookbook from when I was a kid. (I am 24) The recipes are very good and easy to follow. I now work as an after school teacher and am always on the lookout for no bake cookbooks but can never find them. If you work with kids and want to do a cooking project but don't have access to a stove, this book can't be beat! The heart tarts are wonderful.

Eek! Stories to Make You Shriek1 review
Jane O'Connor

Perfection Learning Prebound, 1993

Spooky stories that are perfect for new readers!
If your younger elementary aged child is looking for a spooky thrills, this is a great book to buy. The well written stories are very suspenseful and mysterious. Another great collection of spooky stories for beginning readers is I DARE YOU! STORIES TO SCARE YOU! by Kathleen Keeler (Scholastic, 1999). Working in the public schools, I've discovered that even children who are struggling with ...

Benny's Big Bubble (All Aboard Reading)1 review
Jane O'Connor

Grosset & Dunlap, 1997

My 2 year old loves it!
Rebus is the way to go :) She really enjoys "reading" with me interactively with this book and is now 3. This book has inspired me to get more rebus books. We are not the type to force-feed alphabet or numbers (symbols) to her but reading rebus is an entirely different medium. :)

A story, called Green Ribbon, scared me the most! But I still enjoyed reading it very much!

Slime Time2 reviews
Jane O'Connor

Random House Books for Young Readers, 1990

Best Short Story Of All Time!
I read this book in Elementary School and still remember how good it was! It is written very well and deals with a unique subject, two friends and a "Nickelodeon-type" game show. A toy line called "Dino-Tots" (or something like that) is also featured in this book, with a reoccurring jingle that I'm sure you'll memorize before the end of the book. I wish that this book would go back in print ...
