Pheasants, Deer and Ducks, oh my!
This is the book I've been looking for for a long time. Ever since Gene Hill died, there haven't been many books that manage to capture the humorous side of hunting along with the serious, the wild adventures along with the boring waits on stand...Mr. Spring has written a book that every hunter should read. And if you know a young person that is getting in to hunting or is thinking about it, ...

Deculturalization and the Struggle for Equality
This book gives us a lot of examples of how the minorities in this country have had their cultures altered to fit the American version. There are examples of most of the major minority groups and how the education system has played a major part in the pattern of deculturalization. This book is a must have for any student who wants to know the real history, the stuff they leave out of the text ...

A Well Researched, Fascinating Exploration of the Relationship Between Educational Systems and Social Inequality.
This is an excellent book for anyone interested in alternative educational theories and systems. Joel Spring expertly melds a history of modern education practices with critiques from prominent thinkers in the field, while exploring various alternative models from around the world. While it is true that this book does not urge educators to employ the numerous examined theories and practices, it ...

An excellent historical overview
I have only read chapter 9 of this book. That said, I found it to be extremely helpful, providing a chronological overview of the economic, social and political forces shaping and reshaping American schools in the 19th & 20th centuries. The author presents the perspectives of numerous intellectuals in the field. His writing style is clear and concise. Much easier to read than many other texts ...

Great fiction from a non-fiction writer
If you know the name Joel Spring then you know he is a social historian and educator. Its hard to believe he can make the switch to fiction so easily and so well. The richly drawn characters are as funny and as poignant as I have ever been introduced to. This is not a story only about Alaska (mostly in Sitka) but about the kind of folks that comprise a community and the funny characters ...

Simply the best outdoor book out there.......
I read Thursday's Bird in about 2 days, I couldn't put it down. If there was ever a book that summarized how most pheasant hunters feel, this is it. I liked Joel's style of writing so much I bought his other book, "Season of Obsession" and find it equally incredible. A must buy for all hunters, can't wait for more books from Joel.

This book is a must read
This book is a must read for anyone who ever wondered why public schools can never seem to make up their minds. Dr. Spring presents a balanced view of the agendas and motivations that various groups have for shaping the course of educational direction. No matter where you fall on the political spectrum, this book is informative and enlightening.

Multiculturalism highlighted
Dr. Joel Springs book the Intersection of Cultures is a good academic resource for the study of multiculturalism in education. The book provides an impressive overview of the impact culture has on every social, economic, educational and interpersonal interaction. Brilliant!!!
Something told me I should've saved this book for retirement. Joel Spring paints a rather disturbing picture of American education by asking the often overlooked question, Who controls our schools? (hint: not classroom teachers) According to him, it's not necessarily school administrators or superintendents--it's special interest groups. Past efforts to take schools out of politics have ...

An Insightful Overview of America's Political Stakeholders
Political Agendas for Education gave an informative, albeit biased view of the current political stakeholders in education. Spring began his book with a 40 year old George W. Bush drunk at a party, and swearing off drinking from then on. What did this have to do with education? If I wrote a book about education and began with the Monica Lewinsky debacle, would I be seen as an unbiased writer? I ...

Who Controls Schools? Read this to find out.
Joel Spring paints a rather disturbing picture of American education by asking the often overlooked question, Who controls our schools? (hint: not classroom teachers) According to him, it's not necessarily school administrators or superintendents--it's special interest groups. Past efforts to take schools out of politics have ultimately failed because behind every bureaucrat in the public ...

Another Brick in the Wall
When talking about the relatively recent phenomenon of state schooling in the history of mankind, the U.S. experience is said to have been initiated by Anglo-Saxon Protestants in reaction to Catholic immigrants and their schools. But Joel Spring writes that "A factory-like system in the nineteenth-century schoolroom was not accidental". These government indoctrination centers were designed to ...

excellent
This book does a very good job of illustrating the struggles of various minority groups in the US. It provides an excellent emphasis on the historical status of how these groups came to be influenced by American Education-- which only promoted Anglo, Protestant, and middle-class values instead of multicultural ones. It showed how these groups struggled against and adapted to these ...

Mistaken premise leads to mistrust of international law.
One of very few resources available on this important topic. Unfortunately the book begins with mistaken premises and moves on predictably to weak conclusions. The book begins with the premise that there was no valid international agreement on the UN Declaration of Human Rights, because the US Senate never ratified it. However, as a declaration rather than a treaty or convention it never required ...

Interesting thoughts but biased
This text was recently used for one of my doctoral courses and I found it a very difficult read to "connect" with often having to re-read chapters over-and-over again. The professor forced us to submit reflective journals for each chapter attempting to watch our growth in thinking about some of the issues Spring raises. Although I beleive that some of his information has merit, he fails to ...
