The End Of Cinema As We Know It: American Film in the Nineties1 review
Jon Lewis

NYU Press, 2001

A Great Movie Book!
This is probably the best film book I've read in the last five years. The organization of the book is extremely intelligent, the range of authors is incredible, and their comments are always useful, thought provoking, and fun to read. Most books that cover a range of films offer only descriptions of individual movies. Lewis' book, of course, tells us about the important films of the nineties. ...

Restoring Hope And Trust: An Illustrated Guide To Mastering Trauma
Lisa Lewis, Kay Kelly, ...

Sidran Press, 2004

Understanding how childhood trauma overwhelms adult well-being is at the cornerstone of Restoring Hope and Trust: An Illustrated Guide to Mastering Trauma. Although survivors may use avoidance strategies to cope with the impact of past trauma, many find that it bubbles up anyway often following other life stressors or a new trauma. Restoring Hope and Trust discusses memories of the past, the role of the nervous system, depression, self-image, ...

A Good Anthology
This is a wonderful nearly 500 page book featuring over 30 articles and excerpt writings from some of the world's great divers - including stories of mishaps from submariners and sailors, and an appendix on the history of diving. The Mammoth Book of Eyewitness World War I: Over 280 First-Hand Accounts of the War to End All Wars1 review
Jon Lewis

Running Press, 2003

good book on a bad time
One can read many books covering the campaigns and personalities of World War I and still come away with an incomplete picture of what the war was really about. The strategies, the national goals of the participants, and the political fallout - ushering in the destruction of empires that had lasted for hundreds of years, Bolshevism, fascism and Naziism, with all that was to come out of that - ...

Without Sanctuary: Lynching Photography in America48 reviews
Jon Lewis, Leon F. Litwack, ...

Twin Palms Publishers, 2000

without sanctuary
As a white man over sixty, growing up in the Northeast, I was sheltered from the realities of racism by my surroundings. "Colored people" were simply not socially acceptable, thats all. When you go through this book you will cringe and shutter. What reason and why would white people do this. Not only lynch but torture and maim before they allowed the subject to die, and often for no reason ...

The Mammoth Book of Pirates: Over 25 True Tales of Devilry and Daring by the Most Infamous Pirates of All ...3 reviews
Jon Lewis

Running Press, 2006

Swash buckling fun and full of info
Amazing book, chock full of facts from the horses mouth. Many of the tales printed are from actual journals, documents, diaries, manifests etc so its very interesting to hear first hand stories of these tales. Some of them are a little hard to follow as most of the author wrote in 3rd person but other than that its awesome.

The Mammoth Book of Eyewitness Everest: Marking the 50th Anniversary of the Ascent of Everest, 32 Firsthand ...1 review
Jon Lewis

Running Press, 2003

Well-chosen, well-edited collection for Everest junkies
To mark the 50th anniversary of the first successful climb to the summit of Mount Everest, editor Lewis assembled thirty chapters written by literal Everest eyewitnesses. Not every writer whose account he includes climbed the mountain at all, let alone made it to the summit. The earliest chapter is set in 1913; the last, in 1999. The writers take us from early survey missions, during which ...

The Mammoth Book of Eyewitness Ancient Rome: The History of the Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire in the ...3 reviews
Jon Lewis

Running Press, 2003

Good companion to Gibbons
I really enjoyed this book because it wasn't just a bunch of impersonal historical facts piled into one book. These are writings and historical accounts from those who were present at the time the history was being made. This book gives a unique perspective about the Roman Empire that most history books don't.

Hollywood v. Hard Core: How the Struggle Over Censorship Created the Modern Film Industry1 review
Jon Lewis

NYU Press, 2000

Provocative Title, Thorough Study
Jon E. Lewis has written an interesting book in Hollywood v. Hard Core, although it does not entirely live up to or prove its subtitle, How the Struggle Over Censorship Created the Modern Film Industry, it often comes close. The climax of the book focuses on the battles of the late sixties and early seventies but its vision is much larger and encompasses film history from its origins until the ...

The Mammoth Book of True War Stories (Mammoth Books)1 review
Jon Lewis

Running Press, 1999

Pulling the trigger
The mere concept of war has always befuddled me. The fact that you may be a teacher in a classroom talking about math and the next week deep in a blood bath knowing that every second may be your last is beyond comprehension for most of us. This book reminds you very harshly that these things did happen and who can tell it better than the people who have fought? You realize how funny it sounds to ...

The Mammoth Book of Journalism: 101 Masterpieces from the Finest Writers and Reporters, Including Ernest ...2 reviews
Jon Lewis

Running Press, 2003

An overflowing, but narrow, treasure trove.
This hefty paperback tome is an excellent addition to any library for the wealth of Anglo-American classics contained within. Here we get the great modern war stories along with cultural classics like the infamous article where John Lennon is quoted as saying the Beatles are more famous than Jesus. Many journalism collections are just dreary and dusty old collections, but the selection here is ...

The Mammoth Book of Special Forces: Over 30 Missions of Ultimate Danger Behind Enemy Lines, from the ...1 review
Jon Lewis

Running Press, 2004

Why they are "special"
This one of two military history books I recently re-read, the other being The Mammoth Book of Special Ops. This volume was edited by Jon E. Lewis and consists of eyewitness accounts and/or analyses of "30 missions of ultimate danger from behind enemy lines" that extend throughout the 20th century, from T.E. Lawrence's "The Revolt in the Desert - Special Force Operations, Arabia, 1917" until Eric ...

The Mammoth Book of Life Before the Mast: Sailors' Eyewitness Stories from the Age of Fighting Ships (Mammoth ...1 review
Jon Lewis

Running Press, 2000

Primary Sources are the Historian's Meat
Primary sources, that is materials written by people who actually participated in a historical event, are the meat of historical work, and often the hardest things to find. While secondary sources (materials written by people who were not personally present at an event, but may have read about it or spoken with people who were) can help us gain a basic understanding of an event, we cannot really ...
