The engaging story of America gaining its independence
"From Colonies to Country: 1735-1791" is the third volume in Joy Hakim's "A History of US." This book begins with the British kicking the French out of North America and ends with the American colonists winning independence from the British. After a first chapter that establishes the principle of Freedom of the Press that would come to play a key part in not just the American Revolution but ...

A refreshing approach to teaching history!
I was introduced to Joy Hakim's series as an undergrad and have yet to find a more stimulating resource for teaching history to children. As a child, I (like many, I suspect) dreaded the dry, bare-bones, sketches of American history. Boy, do I wish I had had this book years ago! It brings vibrant life to the wonders of our country's past. This particular volume blooms with exciting stories ...

A time of great hope and incredible change in U.S. history
"Reconstructing America 1865-1890," the 7th volume in Joy Hakim's A History of US series, expands the notion of reconstruction, usually applied only to the Southern states of the former Confederacy to include the entire nation. In her preface to the volume Hakim declares "Are We Equal? Are We Kidding?" Her point is to underscore the Declaration of Independence's famous proposition that all men ...

The English establish thirteen colonies in the New World
"Making Thirteen Colonies: 1600-1740" is the second volume in Joy Hakim's "A History of US." The first volume covered how the first Americans crossed over from Asia to become Indians and the first Europeans, mainly the Spanish but also the French and English, began settling the New World. This volume focuses on the narrow string of settlements established by the English that became the thirteen ...

Helpful book
I'd just like to say I found this helpful for homeschooling my high schooler. There is a test at regular intervals. It is hard enough that you could not guess at it, but it is not so hard you have to memorize every date or anything. There is no pressure to prepare for cumulative tests. Yet there is enough to keep the student alert & thinking while reading. This one book is expensive, but ...

Joy Hakim looks at the extremes of the Gilded Age
Joy Hakim forewarns her young readers that "An Age of Extremes 1880-1917," volume 8 in A History of US, talks a lot about Economics, but also assures them that this time around it will not be a "yawn." This particular volume looks at the United States at what we now refer to as the turn of the last century, what Mark Twain called the "Gilded Age." However, the preface sets up the idea that ...

The United States expands as it moves towards Civil War
"Liberty for All? 1820-1860" is the fifth volume in Joy Hakim's "A History of US," and focuses on the question of how slavery could exist in the land of the free. While this book clearly sets up the next volume, "War, Terrible War 1855-1865," which covers the Civil War, it also has some significant overlap with the previous volume, "The New Nation 1780-1850," which ends with the Compromise of ...

Getting the Real Story
A few years ago - my older daughter was maybe 11 - we listened to the entire History of US series on tape in the car. It really opened up my eyes, and now I'm reading through the series again with my younger daughter, who is 10. History and social studies were never my favorite subjects in school; in fact, I seemed to have some sort of mental block where that subject area was concerned. In ...

Science, History, & Vocabulary! Oh MY!
This book is informative and interesting, not dry and/or stuffy like most science books. This is the 2nd or 3rd in the "Story of Science" series that I have purchased and I would highly recommend them to anyone. Joy Hakim not only writes about science, but she writes about how the world was when these scientists were making their discoveries and the struggles they had while doing so. Another ...

Not your ordinary textbook
The History of US may look similar to a typical textbook at first glance, but that's where the comparison ends. Written in an engaging style with plenty of photos, drawings and other visuals to keep it interesting, this series of books held our family's attention from beginning to end. As an adult, I felt I learned -- and understood! -- more about aspects of our country's history than I ever ...

The American experiment goes from theory to practice
The reason Joy Hakim's "A History of US" series is so perfect for home schooling is that she actively engages her young readers in each volume. Usually in a history textbook like this the author is primarily concerned with presenting a lot of information in a captivating manner. There is some attention paid to the importance of people and events, but it is often left to the teacher in the ...

The first volume in Joy Hakim's "A History of US"
A History of US is basically an attempt to write a juvenile history of the United States that will speak to a generation of young readers who get most of their information from computers and the Internet. That means Joy Hakim offers up lots of information with lots of illustrations, but it also means been very much aware of the mind set of her readers. When Hakim describes the scope "The First ...

Another Great Book!
I notice that one negative review has been repeated on multiple Joy Hakim books verbatim. I LIKE the sidebars and pictures. There is a ton of ART history and beautiful graphic design work in the books. Perhaps it is because my husband, son and I are all artists, but we particularly enjoyed the layout of the books. I felt a fusion of science with art in the presentation. The history is ...

War and Peace
We are using this book alongside of the Tapestry of Grace curriculum. It is an excellent source for chronological history. Joy Hakim presents the information in a manner that is easily understood for my girls in lower grades as well as detailed enough for my high school age daughter. I highly recommend her entire series.

Wonderful Book!
As a homeschool mother, I am always looking for historical resources that are not only good for providing great information but also entertaining as a read aloud. This book and series does the job. The style is easy reading and the pictures throughout keep the attention of all. The great part is that the material isn't watered down in the process. I learned so much reading this book this ...

The History of US series gets the story of the Civil War
"War, Terrible War: 1855-1865," the sixth volume in Joy Hakim's A History of US series, tells the story of the Civil War, although the author points out that there was nothing civil about it. Instead, Hakim favors Lincoln's notion that the purpose of the war was to give the nation a "new birth of freedom," and that becomes the thesis of the volume. Within these pages young readers will learn ...

Great in so many ways...
I will organize my review into 4 parts: 1. What I was looking for, 2. The ideal audience for this book (just my opinion), 3. Strengths and weaknesses of this book, 4. Who could benefit by owning this book. 1. People of a certain age may remember the Time-Life series of science books. I especially loved the volumes devoted to physical science and math. Those books were written for kids in the ...

History the fun way
These books will have all ages learning or reviewing history with fascination as if reading a good novel. Joy Hakim informs with a humorous, plain-spoken manner that will keep you glued to the pages. My kids and I are enchanted by Hakim's flowing presentation and always read more of her information than we need for the sake of homework.
