Architects and Firms : A Sociological Perspective on Architectural Practices
Judith R. Blau
The MIT Press
, 1987
For this book, sociologist Judith Blau surveyed 152 Manhattan architectural firms over a five-year period, interviewing more than 400 architects. Architects and Firms , the result of her investigation, vividly depicts the contradictions inherent in architectural practice and challenges many assumptions about the design professional. Judith Blau is Associate Professor of Sociology at SUNY Albany and Research Scholar at the Center for the ...

The Bagel Baker is the best!
When I was a child, my parents read this book to my sister and I often. Now, that I am a teacher I continue to find this book rewarding for myself and my students. The story captures a magical feeling of family, culture, tradition, holidays, and bagels! I wish someday to buy this book for my own children. IT's a shame that a book that use to be ... is now out of print and costing ...! This ...

Great collection of mid-sized articles
Cannot recommend this text highly enough. It covers a lot of territory and many major authors have contributed chapters within this compilation. I reference it all the time. Sometimes these academic comps can just be an underhanded way for an Assistant Prof. to gain stature within a sub-genre. I am happy to say that in the case of Art and Society this could not be further from the truth.

Poor Citations and Scholarship Quality!
I have the misfortune of reading this book for a class at UCLA School of Law. The authors do a great disservice in trying to represent a counterargument for neoliberal economic policies. There are numerous missing or incorrect citations. This leads the reader to conclude that the authors are just giving their personal opinion, for which they do not have a basis. They rant, rather than give ...

Excellent piece of work.
This book covers a vast array of different kinds of literature from different times all over the world. It's as effective as a classroom text book as it is for private use. I would definitely recommend getting it.

Freedoms and Solidarities: In Pursuit of Human Rights
Judith Blau
Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc.
, 2007
Building on the materials of the first two volumes in their trilogy on human rights, in this third volume Blau and Moncada situate many of their arguments within the classical tradition of critical social science, but they also advance the genre of utopian social thought. This is not, in their hands, a speculative undertaking. They draw from empirical evidence, including many national comparisons. In volume 2, for example, they show how the U.S. ...
