Great Overview!
This book gives a great overview of the social aspects of U.S. History since 1865. It was rather refreshing to read a history book that was not so narrowly focused on the death and carnage of war in this nation. The wars are discussed, of course, in relative detail, but more weight is placed on how they affected our nation's citizens and society as a whole. The photographs and illustrations ...

Abolitionists Remember: Antislavery Autobiographies and the Unfinished Work of Emancipation
Julie Roy Jeffrey

The University of North Carolina Press, 2008

In Abolitionists Remember , Julie Roy Jeffrey illuminates a second, little-noted antislavery struggle as abolitionists in the postwar period attempted to counter the nation's growing inclination to forget why the war was fought, what slavery was really like, and why the abolitionist cause was so important. In the rush to mend fences after the Civil War, the memory of the past faded and turned romantic—slaves became quaint, owners kindly, ...

Not that bad
This book is rather nice in its presentation of rather mundane information. The details of specific events can be scarce, but for a small history book.

The Great Silent Army of Abolitionism: Ordinary Women in the Antislavery Movement
Julie Roy Jeffrey

The University of North Carolina Press, 1998

By focusing on male leaders of the abolitionist movement, historians have often overlooked the great grassroots army of women who also fought to eliminate slavery. Here, Julie Roy Jeffrey explores the involvement of ordinary women?black and white?in the most significant reform movement prior to the Civil War. She offers a complex and compelling portrait of antebellum women's activism, tracing its changing contours over time. For more than three ...

Converting the West: A Biography of Narcissa Whitman (Oklahoma Western Biographies)1 review
Julie Roy Jeffrey

University of Oklahoma Press, 1994

A wonderful book
Julie Roy Jeffrey's achievement is a must for anyone interested in the history of the American frontier. It tells the tragic tale of a clash between two incompatible cultures and consequently highlights the complexity of the frontier experience. Here all notions of European conquest or Native American savagery are replaced by a reality of failed coexistence.

A good textbook
I enjoyed using this text for some courses I took, as it was very informative and well set up. It covers American history from 1865 up to 2005, and each time period is covered through a similar structure (political events, social events, impacts on special groups, cultural trends). The book has a very consistent feel throughout. The fact that it covers events up until the very recent past (2005) ...

Where Wagons Could Go: Narcissa Whitman and Eliza Spaulding3 reviews

University of Nebraska Press, 1997

where wagons could go
As a great-great-greatdaughter of eliza hart spalding, I found the book very informative and enlightening. I never realized the perils and problems that being the first white women in a land of natives that could be encountered. Both Narcissa and Eliza had courage and strength even though they seemed to have different personalities. The author was very informative and he backed his ...
