Wagner redeems the generally sorry swords and sorcery genre
I don't like swords & sorcery, but I read the Kane stories over and over again. Why? Imagine what Conan would be like if he had brains, class, and a believable reason for being so tough. These are rip-roaring adventure stories that still manage to make you think. And Kane is one of the most colorful and fascinating characters you'll ever read about. Piecing together his history from a hint in ...

A Quest-Lover's Treasury of the Fantastic1 review

Aspect, 2002

Great Collection
I all want to say in this short review is that this is one of the best (short) collections of fantasy stories out there. Every one of the stories is engaging and continues being so all the way till the end. My favorite by far is "Bully and the Beast" by Orson Scott Card. Beautiful and thought-provoking. Most of the stories have humor worked into them too. I highly recommend this collection

Bran Mak Morn: Legion from the Shadows1 review
Karl Edward Wagner

Zebra Books, 1976

A Forgotten Classic
Karl Wagner wrote this pastiche of Robert E. Howard's pictish king, Bran Mac Morn during the heyday, resurgence, or whatever it was of Howard reprints in paperback. Wagner wove a tale of swords and sorcery around the very real disappearance of the Roman 9th Legion in Britain and what a tale it is. Despite his success as a writer of heroic fantasy, Wagner always considered himself more a writer of ...

Gods in Darkness: The Complete Novels of Kane10 reviews

Night Shade Books, 2002

Classic Dark Fantasy
What I'm Reading: GODS IN DARKNESS - Karl Edward Wagner When Karl Edward Wagner began writing his Kane stories in 1970 he inherited the legacy of the barbarian hero from Robert E. Howard. Howard had almost single-handedly created sword-and-sorcery with his works, but Wagner - in creating his character of Kane - not only went back to the roots which had been planted by Conan and Kull (as so ...

Conan: Red Nails3 reviews
Robert E. Howard

Berkley Publishing Corp., 1979

A great introduction to Howard's "Conan" character
Take a trip into our barbaric past, when the white race did not question the necessity of manifest destiny or the need to subdue non- whites by violence, and women existed as chattel and threat to male dominance. This collection of stories is not politically correct, and hopefully readers' enjoyment will contend with their discomfort at Howard's obvious racism and sexism. Readers should ...

Night Winds4 reviews

Warner Books, 1978

Kane battles Lucifer for his soul.
Kane finds himself near death from a recent battle under a strange moon. Taking refuge with his comrades in an inn he is subtley reminded of past transgressions here. A woman he has once wronged has made a pact with the devil promising her child, the result of her union with Kane, as payment for the devil's help in taking Kane's soul/life and repaying the torment he has given her in the life of ...
