Three in one and one in three
Karl Rahner was one of the major theologians of the twentieth century, who ironically often described himself as a theological amateur. Rahner's career as a teacher took place largely in secular universities (oddly enough, his attempt for a doctorate in philosophy under the auspices of the Jesuits failed; one has to wonder by what standards he was being judged), but he never lost his ...

Excellent Lenten meditations
This book contains meditations on the Seven Last Words, Reflections & Litanies on the Agony in the Garden and a more general reflection on the life of Christ. They are based firmly in the Scripture and experience - not highly theological as you might assume based on the author. I would rank this among the top three Lenten books.

Treasure to be savoured and used in meditation
Each chapter in this work provides enough material for reflection to fill a month - and, perhaps, that is the way to enjoy it fully. Father Rahner's sermons on prayer, especially deep and poignant because they were originally delivered to Germans suffering the pain and deprivation following the second world war, are exquisitely beautiful. He writes movingly of how God strips aways our false ways, ...

The contribution of a truly holy and selfless man
Karl Rahner: Spiritual Writings collects the spiritual writings of Karl Rahner (1904-1984), a Jesuit priest and one of the most well-known Catholic theologians of the twentieth century. Some of his works are presented in English for the first time, skillfully edited by English Jesuit and journal editor Philip Endean. Each topic of Rahner's writings is brief, lasting only a few pages, but the ...

Set the controls for the Heart of the Son
'Foundations of Christian Faith' is a deceptive title for a book which is in fact an overview of the whole field of Rahner's catholic progressive theology and it is no easy read; I gave an Italian version to a doctor friend who gave up reading it after the first 50 pages because 'it was too difficult'! It is however compulsory reading for anyone interested in the perennial conflict within ...

Rahner's Mystical encounters with Silence
"The quiet we seek for retreat ... is more often recalled in its absence than in its presence. When was the last time you witnessed a joyful silence, a rapturous silence? When have you heard some raconteur relay a congenial encounter with silence." Jane H. Kay "I am drawn more and more to the mystical Christ. I always was. There was always something much deeper than words for me. Much ...
