Putting gender on center stage
During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Anglo-American discourses of gender, race and power underwent major historical transformations; authority was no longer the "natural" expression of divine providence, and in the New World beliefs in fundamental sex differences acquired new meanings. As Kathleen M. Brown makes clear in her work, this was no simple transition; rather, the language ...

Not an introduction but a strong place for further study
If this is your introduction to Cleaver buy Soul on Ice first. If you have read Soul on Ice then this is a good time to buy this book. This is a collection of writings that expands Cleaver's life. When reading this you must keep it in the frame of reference of the time in which it was written. There are better written books on the black Muslim movement like James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time, ...

Look No Further
Lovely, informative book. I took it with me to the health food store so I could have a better idea what to look for. Bulk herbs can be a bit intimidating if you are new to using them. I think this book would be very useful to anyone new to making teas, as well as those who are more experienced. I like that there are several recipes for teas that have the same effect, such as energizing blends, ...

Not Pretty
These architectural masterpieces deserve a beautiful pop-up book. This isn't it. Why would anyone display the Taj Mahal as PINK when it is one of the most famous dazzling white marble monuments in the world? Notre Dame? Again, PINK! (Rose Window, guys; not rose walls.) They might have got away with just the tip of the Empire State Building floating above the clouds if they had put the ...

GREAT for kids - first exposure to composers tough for little ones
My daughter's piano teacher gave her the assignment to read about Mozart as she started her first Mozart Minuet. My daughter was 7 at the time, and although she was reading at above 3rd grade level, I was shocked to find that there was NOTHING available on the internet or in her school library that give her information on composers at HER level. I finally found "Lives of the Musicians" and have ...

What a fun, fun, book.. is it really for children?
I found this book in the children's section of the library, but this is not a children's book; although children might enjoy it. This book is very reminiscent of the "Politically Incorrect Bedtime Stories" series. It's a wonderfully campy little book full of facts about just how bizarre artists are. It would make a great coffee table book. I just loved it! I can't wait to read the companion book ...
