A Time For Courage: The Suffragette Diary of Kathleen Bowen, Washington, D.C. 1917 (Dear America Series)18 reviews
Kathryn Lasky

Scholastic Inc., 2002

One of the Best in the Series
A Time for Courage by Kathryn Lasky is one of my all-time favorite books in the Dear America historical fiction series. It is not particularly my favorite era of American history, but it is so well-written and interesting you just fall right in. Kathleen Bowen's mother, aunt, older sister, and best friend's mother are all deeply involved in women's suffrage and equality rights, living in ...

Alice Rose & Sam6 reviews
Kathryn Lasky

Recorded Books, 2001

A REAL page-turner!
A while ago, I was faced with a decision: to read Alice Rose and Sam or another book for a book review. I decided, not really caring, to read Alice Rose and Sam. Now I am so happy that I did so I could tell other people about this great book. You just can't put it down! You learn about Alice Rose's time, too, so this is a simply marvelous book to read.

The Coming of Hoole (Guardians of Ga'hoole, Book 10)6 reviews
Kathryn Lasky

Scholastic, 2006

Gahoole Series
My youngest Daughter initially purchased Book 1 of this series from a book order form from school. Once she had read it, I happened to look at it and started reading the story as it seemed interesting. We both became "hooked" to the story. I came on line to AMAZON & found out it was a series with 3 more books already released. I immediately ordered the the books. Once they arrived we both ...

Exile (Guardians of Ga'hoole)5 reviews
Kathryn Lasky, 2008

Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lots of action. I like these weird blue owls from the middle kingdom because it introduces weirdness. Also, I like the idea of The Striga (Blue owl from the middle kingdom; member of the dragon court who were formerly hagsfiends) somehow being completely opposite to "vanity" and thinks there should be none of it. (I don't like the idea)

The Rescue (Guardians of Ga'Hoole)21 reviews
Kathryn Lasky

HarperCollinsChildren'sBooks, 2006

2 thumbs up!
I am really excited about this series! It is one of those books that you get a really satisfied feeling when you've finished it, but at the same time you are craving more. Before I picked up these books I thought practically nothing of owls. Now I know tons of facts I'd never thought of before, and have a whole new outlook about them. though this series is made up of 8 books, the books in this ...

Shadows in the Water11 reviews
Kathryn Lasky

Rebound by Sagebrush, 1999

An Exciting Page Turner
I enjoyed Shadows in the Water because it is such an imaginative novel but yet seems so real. The Starbuck Family is full of unusual features. Including two sets of twins, Liberty and July (feternal),Molly and Charly (identical), the Starbuck Family goes on many wild adventures. To make the story even more exciting, both sets of twins are telipathic. On this expidition, the twins are sent to the ...

Golden Tree7 reviews
Kathryn Lasky

Topeka Bindery, 2007

An Amazing Read
I read this book, and it was fantastic! The Golden Tree is perhaps one of Mrs. Lasky's best books in the entire Guardians of Ga'Hoole series. The Band finally makes a comeback, and Coryn is getting used to being King. Soren's chicks also hatch, though I was disappointed there wasn't much about them in The Golden Tree. Coryn and the Band go on a journey to discover whether Nyra is really a ...

Guardians of Ga'hoole4 reviews
Kathryn Lasky

Apple, 2003

a fun way to learn
My kids have enjoyed reading these books and have learned a great deal about owls and consequently about birds in general from them. The author seems to have done a great deal of research and works in much detail.

Lunch Bunnies4 reviews
Kathryn Lasky

Little, Brown, 1999

Excellent for kids going from kindergarten to 1st grade!
I absolutely adore books like this because they take a lighthearted, yet sensitive look at concerns that are very real in the minds of small children as they enter school. Lunch Bunnies is the story of a little boy named Clyde who harbors an irrational fear of making a fool out of himself on his first day of school, in the lunchroom. Anyone with small children can instantly relate how Clyde ...

Dear America: A Time for Courage the Diary of Kathleen Bowen2 reviews
Kathryn Lasky

Scholastic Inc., 2001

A wonderful new book from the Dear America series.
It's 1917 in Washington, D.C, and as the Great War rages in Europe, thirteen-year-old Kathleen Bowen is caught up in a fight closer to home. Her mother, sister Nell, and Auntie Claire are suffragists, fighting for voting rights for women, to the disapproval of her Uncle Bayard and the worry of her father. Kat and her cousin Alma, who are the exact same age, want to help, but they are too young to ...

Before I Was Your Mother4 reviews
Kathryn Lasky, LeUyen Pham, 2003

Tugs on the heartstrings
I received this book for Mother's Day from a dear friend who supported me through a long struggle with infertility. I was blessed to give birth to my daughter Caitlin in September, 2000. This book is wonderfully touching as a mother tells her daughter about what she was like before she became a mother, and how much she longed to someday be a mom. She tells her daughter, Katie, how she named all ...

Walker Books Ltd, 1998

A modern day Velveteen Rabbit!
A truly touching story, brought to life with delightful illustrations from Wendy Anderson Halperin, about the special bond between a child and a treasured toy. As a collector of children's books, this one is a winner and will be treasured for years to come.

Vision of Beauty4 reviews
Kathryn Lasky

Walker Books, 2001

Excellent book for one and all!
Summary: This is a real life story of a young freed slave girl named Sarah Breedlove who feels inferior to white women because she is not as beautiful. She soon discovers a way to use herbs and oils to create hair products that will provide "colored" women with healthy hair. To advertise, she relies on ads that show colored women with healthy hair and a confident demeanor. As her company ...

First Painter2 reviews
Dawn Sirett, Kathryn Lasky, ...

DK CHILDREN, 2000

One Word--WOW!
FIRST PAINTER literally took my breath away. It is a truly powerful and beautiful picture book--the words, the illustrations, and the design. I've read it three times in a row and I love it more with each rereading. FIRST PAINTER is Lasky's fictional story about what she imagines could have been the first cave painter. The story is told from the perspective of Mishoo, a young girl who is the ...

Pond Year3 reviews
Kathryn Lasky

Walker Books Ltd, 1996

It brought back memories
I have always loved reading this book to my preschoolers during my Pond Unit. I'm retiring this year and decided to purchase my own copy since I usually used a library book. I was horrified to find out that it is out of print. Not only does the book bring back memories of playing and exploring in the water as a child, I always hoped it would encourage curiousity in today's t.v. saturated ...

A Baby for Max (Baby for Max Juv. Cloth)2 reviews
Kathryn Lasky, Maxwell B. Knight

Scribner Book Company, 1984

A great book to prepare the older sibling!
I loved this book. It was written by Max's mom and she used his words to describe his reactions to her pregnancy, visiting the hospital before the baby was born, meeting his baby sister and life at home following. Max does get upset with all the attention paid to his sister, but he learns to adjust and loves his little sister. An added bonus, mom breastfeeds! Great black and white photos go ...
