Mitten Strings for God: Reflections for Mothers in a Hurry34 reviews
Katrina Kenison

Grand Central Publishing, 2002

A Beautiful, Thoughtful Book - Requires the right frame of mind to appreciate
As others have noted, this book is a series of reflections about motherhood and the importance of slowing down to savor daily life with loved ones. This book energized me to make several changes in my own life. Part of my motivation for homeschooling this year was a desire to have a more conscious, contemplative, and purposeful life rather than a frantic-mad-dashing here and there life. ...

The Best American Short Stories 2002 (The Best American Series)9 reviews

Houghton Mifflin, 2002

a wonderful collection
The Best American Short Stories 2002 is a wonderful collection, and a great introduction to some of america's finest new authors. I especially liked the first story, entitled Along the Fontage Road -a compelling story from a father's point of veiw about raising his son in today's world. I would recomend this book to just about anyone who enjoys reading.

The Best American Short Stories 2004 (The Best American Series)15 reviews

Houghton Mifflin, 2004

Another fine anthology from BASS
The 2004 Best American Short Stories collection, edited by Lorrie Moore, is the fattest BASS anthology yet. With stories by Sherman Alexie, T.C. Boyle, Deborah Eisenberg, Paula Fox, Jill McCorkle, Alice Munro, Annie Proulx, John Edgar Wideman, and John Updike, among others, the collection features a wide range of writers, most well known. Many stories come from The New Yorker (eight), a couple ...

The Best American Short Stories 2003 (The Best American Series (TM))11 reviews

Houghton Mifflin, 2003

Just very good literature
This delicious short stories collection has taken me a long time to read. Not because the stories were boring or bad but since every story was so condensed, rich and powerful I could not easily part from a certain state of mind and place and move on the next story. I try to think what are the similar features of these 2003 stories and what can they say about our time...these are very different ...

Meditations from the Mat: Daily Reflections on the Path of Yoga28 reviews
Rolf Gates, Katrina Kenison

Anchor, 2002

A Must Have Yoga Tool
I was introduced to this book by my yoga teacher two years ago. It's an amazing book to guide you through your yoga journey. It's meant to be read in 365 days but there were times I would let it sit for a while. When I picked it up to read again it was always pertinent to where I was in my yoga practice and in my life. I highly recommend it for long time yoga practictioners and beginners too.

The Best American Short Stories 2000 (The Best American Series)14 reviews

Houghton Mifflin, 2000

99 was a good year
Doctorow has excellent taste in short fiction. With only a few exceptions (Junot Diaz and Marilyn Krysl), the stories in this collection are excellent. Amy Bloom's story, "The Story", which i think is a great title, is an interesting story about writing, about the characters in the story, and it is a story about itself.Michael Byers has a great story about obsession and attraction rather than ...

The Best American Short Stories of the Century (The Best American Series (TM))43 reviews

Houghton Mifflin, 2000

Short Story Group
I am part of a short story group that meets weekly. We read two stories each week. We've read the first 12 stories so far. I can't tell you how much I am enjoying this opportunity to sample authors that "somehow" I completely missed even though I have a master's degree in language arts. Even if I don't care for a story, I am glad to sample the writing. It also gives me an opportunity to ...

The Best American Short Stories 2005 (The Best American Series)19 reviews

Houghton Mifflin, 2005

Great collection
This collection is great. I enjoyed every story to some degree, and a couple are fantastic. Tom Perrotta's (ELECTION) "The Smile On Happy Chang's Face" is absurd and hilarious. Thomas McGuane's "Old Friends," "Death Defier" by Tom Bissell, "Old Boys, Old Girls" by Edward P. Jones, "The Secret Goldfish" by David Means and "Natasha" by David Bezmozgis are all excellent reads. But my favorite two ...

The Best American Short Stories 199920 reviews

Houghton Mifflin Company, 1999

A fine collection
I found this to be an excellent, thoughtfully assembled collection of stories. I must especially disagree with the reviewer who felt that having a b writer like Pam Houston in a collection with Rick Bass ammounts to a literary injustice. Quite to the contrary, Houston's story is the best in the book and bears re-reading. (And, if you've checked out John Updike's Best Short Stories of the ...

The Best American Short Stories 1998 (The Best American Series (TM))8 reviews

Houghton Mifflin, 1998

Great stories
In this collection the focus is on great storytelling. You won't find lots of stylistic acrobatics and clever postmodern narrative techniques but you will find stories that are consistently moving and a joy to read. This is the most enjoyable collection of Best American Short Stories that I have read. The audiotape is also fantastic with many of the stories being read by Garrison Keillor.

The Best American Short Stories 1995 (Best American Short Stories)3 reviews

Houghton Mifflin, 1995

not much to say
I loved this collection so much, that I loaned it out to a friend who never gave it back, and have thought of The Angel Esmeralda and Hand Jive so much that I had to buy it again. The Jennifer Cornell story is quite affecting also.

Leaving Cold Sassy: The Unfinished Sequel to Cold Sassy Tree21 reviews
Olive Ann Burns, Katrina Kenison

Ticknor & Fields, 1992

Great partner with Cold Sassy Tree
(LEAVING COLD SASSY is the unfinished sequel to Cold Sassy Tree with Reminiscence by Katrina Kenison) After author Olive Ann Burns' first book, Cold Sassy Tree, became an instant hit when it was published in 1984, it received overwhelming accolades from readers and critics across the country. Everyone wanted a sequel, and Burns, who was struggling with cancer and later, congestive heart ...

The Best American Short Stories 1997 (Best American Short Stories)4 reviews
Kenison

Houghton Mifflin, 1997

Nourishment for the Hungry Mind
Now that "Story" Magazine has tragically folded (I forgive you, Lois), the annual "Best of" series is just about my only source left for finding a large number of really high-quality short stories in one place. "Atlantic," "The New Yorker," "Playboy," and all the other standard fiction venues are nice occasionally, but they each publish two or three stories per month at the most. Just as I ...
