a landmark poetic document recorded and built by a master
if you want to know where the comtemporary obsession with large format color "street" work came from, this is it. newer books, by artists like alec soth and other color documentary artists, are excellent, important books, but it must at least be noted that the true groundbreakers were working a generation ago, putting out these kinds of books before it was the accepted trend. and simply put, this ...
Fabian Marcaccio: From Altered Paintings To Paintants
Thomas Keenan
, Katy Siegel, ...
Walther Konig
, 2005
This second but independent volume, Re-Sketching Democracy, shows the newly realized "paintant" of that name by Argentine artist Fabian Marcaccio. An enormous, colorful canvas thick with paint, the "paintant" incorporates commercial logos and political imagery. Marcaccio's voracious art achieves a scale that often bursts gallery bounds and always challenges the mind.
High Times, Hard Times
Independent Curators International, New York/D.A.P.
, 2006
In the late 1960s, the New York art world was, famously, an exhilarating place to be. New forms, including performance and video art, were making their debuts, and sculpture was developing in startling ways. In the midst of it all, experimental abstract painting was pressing art's most iconic medium to its limits and beyond. High Times, Hard Times fills a gap in coverage of this moment in history, recapturing its liveliness and urgency with more ...

Parkett
, 2007
Volume 79 of the influential international art journal Parkett features Jon Kessler, Marilyn Minter and Albert Oehlen. In the tinkered gadgetry of Kessler's retro sci-fi installations, we peek through surveillance cameras to see our own image among his analog programs crammed with detritus of all kinds. Kessler's vista of (d)evolved cyberstuff is in a manic state of accumulation, as this data-diving artist masters the ecology of pure ...

Book Design and Virtually All Photos Quite Interesting
The Refco Group is a financial services company whose collection of recent (i.e., mainly 1970s-2002) artistic photographs is highlighted in this catalog. The book's overall design by "studio blue" is unique. The clear plastic dust jacket contains the title and subtitle on the front and spine. This partially encloses the stiff paper cover which extends only 2/3rds of the way to the edge and ...

Imaginary Color Queen
I just had the opportunity to glance through this book at a gallery where 20 or so of Dana's paintings are hanging. The reproductions are good quality, although Dana's coloration is hard to mimick. Some of the reds looked too red, but otherwise quite a stellar collection--humorous, poignant, original and artsy in a very fresh way. Dana is a rising star.

This is an excellent book and an excellent series for anyone who wants to know more about art being creating today. My Art History professor uses this book at the text book for her Contemporary Art class. I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in seeing art history in the making.
Art Works: Money

Paul Mattick
Thames & Hudson
, 2004
A unique exhibition in a book, presenting challenging art that deals with the place and function of autobiography in the contemporary world. Art Works: An exciting new series celebrating the vitality and diversity of art in the twenty-first century. Not only is money central to our daily existence, it also controls the very way societies organize themselves. It's small wonder then that artists engage with this most powerful of social ...

su-per-no-va: n., pl. A rare celestial phenomenon involving the explosion of most of the material in a star, resulting in an extremely bright, short-lived object that emits vast amounts of energy. Given the massive shift in the West's cultural sensibility in the wake of the 9/11 attacks and the current global political situation, the 1990s and its over-the-top, anything-goes art scene suddenly appear much more historical than contemporary. If we ...

Hot new talent
Being twenty and in art school I am in a constant battle to find my direction. I came across Lisa Yuskavage in a painting magazine six months ago. IS IT ART? YES, IT IS.
If someone told you that there was an exhibition of plop art at your local museum, would you rush over to see it? Probably not. But, you should because plop art is some of the most exciting, innovative art to be found. The name "plop art," which is sometimes used in a pejorative manner, refers to public art that is not considered to have any relation to its surroundings. In other words, it's ...

Fabian Marcaccio: 661 Conjectures For A New Paint Management 1989-2004
Thomas Keenan
, Katy Siegel, ...
Walther Konig
, 2005
In 661 Conjectures for a New Paint Management, the first of two volumes that complement but don't require each other, Argentine artist Fabian Marcaccio presents 661 actual-size, black-and-white drawings made over the past 15 years. These serve as a kind of DNA for his massive "paintants," in whose sweeping, curving canvases the artist seeks a new paradigm for art, since, as he says here, we've arrived at "a place beyond the exhaustion of late ...

New painting and drawing is the subject of Remote Viewing , which accompanies an exhibition at the Whitney Museum. The book brings together eight artists, some well known, others emerging, all of whom create new worlds that exist somewhere between abstraction and representation. Each of the featured artists-Franz Ackermann, Steve DiBenedetto, Carroll Dunham, Ati Maier, Julie Mehretu, Matthew Ritchie, Alexander Ross, and Terry Winters -is part ...
