Buddhist Fariytales
I had to read this book for a course on Tantric Buddhism and it was so much fun to read. There is a great introduction which explains a bit about Tantra and some of the terminology in the book. The book is about the mahasiddhas or exemplars of this tradition. The book consists of short stories, about two pages each, of the enlightenment and adventures of these religious people. The best part ...

Fantastic! Legends of Tantric Pioneers
Before Tibetan Buddhism, Don Juan, and "New Age" Tantra, there were the 84 founders of the great Tantric Lineages of today. Keith Dowman's version of these tales of awakening, liberation and fulfillment is simply brilliant, as usual. Here Dowman's divine gift for revealing the Heart & Soul of a great teacher's spiritual life is well complimented by the amazing power of Robert Beer's magical ...

Maybe "the other Buddhism"
I read this book via a borrowed first edition, in one mesmerized sitting. 2nd ed. should be same. Now I must own it as soon as re-published! A fabulous story of the Buddhist monk whose left-hand path will scandalize some and delight others. I visited Drukpa Kunley's monastery in Bhutan and received the resident head monk's blessing with both the wooden phallus and the ivory one. Kunley ...

All the mahasiddhas in one volume!
Dowman's book is a translation, or, as Dowman himself calls it, adaption, of a Tibetan text "Legends of the Eighty-four mahasiddhas" and is as such central among the translations of Vajrayana Buddhist texts available in English. All the biographies are given here in one volume along with a good introduction to Buddhist tantra. Along with every biography is given a short verse from another ...

Finally,a book about Buddhists!
This fresh look at the actual practice of Tibetan Buddhists is a nice change from the traditional overview dealing with philosophical intricacies. Dowman looks at the practice through and folk lore and traditions that make up the history of the people. Issues such as how Buddhists relate to their environment and how that has effect the unique form of Buddhism that arose from the Tibetan culture ...

original not misleading
I usually do not write reviews but I feel that this book especially in the context of one of these other reviews deserves one. Dowman has optioned upon a path different from most other western translators of tibetan literature. There is a "well beaten" path out there but the parameters of this path are often quite limited to old views of what exactly tibetan means in english. The old dictionaries ...
