I wish there were more Christmas stories like this.
My stepfather David is a writer and he knows Kevin Major. David was able to obtain a copy from Kevin for a Christmas gift for me. It has Kevin's autograph in gold ink. I like to read it every December. I read one chapter per day from the first to the twenty-fourth, which is what Kevin wrote the book for. I feel for Jesse and his mother, living alone, no close family around, and no stability. I ...

Gripping, tragic and heroic.
Although I read this book several years ago, it had a lasting effect on my thoughts of war. Kavin Major's writing brings the characters to life in your mind, showing you the fear, the heroism, and the humanity that lie in war. As a Newfoundlander, I had learned about the battle of Beaumont Hamel and the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, but this book painted a vivid picture of the battle in my mind. ...

Far from Shore isn't Far off the Mark! by James Stubbs
Far From Shore by Kevin Major Kevin Major pulls you in the book at once. The book begins when Chris, the main character, is at the Christmas dinner with his mom and sister when his dad walks in drunk. His dad usually does this, so it is nothing new. Chris's family is poor and when his dad moves away for the summer they have no way of making money. When ever his dad goes away he gets mad ...

Average.
If you are going to write a book about WWI, i would suggest that you come up with a new angle than a group of men - too many to develop any characters fully - sitting around in trenches in relatively high spirits until they have to go over the walls. I know this is the reality of the war. I know that this is actually what happened to those poor men. However, I also know almost every war book is ...

I love the Me to We Philosophy
Craig and Marc's stories are so amazing. I used to think that I can't make a difference in the world because I am only 14 years old. This book taught me that even the smallest of actions can create a ripple that affects more people than I can ever imagine. The ideas in this book are really quite simple, but when articulated so clearly by Marc and Craig, it just makes so much sense.

Lovely fictional story of a forgotten historical hero
Kevin Major's short prose poems detailing snippets of the 1800s immigrant life of Ann, who lives in Newfoundland, and Seamus, who is aboard a ship emigrating from Ireland, is beautifully crafted and reminiscent of oral storytelling and songwriting traditions. The story revolves around the meeting of Ann and Seamus when Seamus' ship runs upon a reef off the coast of Newfoundland. Ann and her ...

Book Review The book that I was reading was called Hold Fast, and going to tell you about my overall evaluation about how good or bad the story was. I believe that the book hold fast was a very good book because of the events that happen in the story. I like the main character Michael, Because of the kind of situation that he was in and what he did to control it. I also liked the story ...

Blood Red Ochre was a good book!
I believe that Kevin Major wrote the novel "Blood Red Ochre" because he wanted to inform people about the Beothuk indians of Newfoundland in an interesting way. The use of parallel narritives in the novel, lets the reader see the story from two very different view points. "Blood Red Ochre" tells the story of David, a teenage boy living in rural Newfoundland, and Daoodaset, a young Beothuk boy ...

Can I Live There too....
I bought a copy of this absolutely delightful book for my 6-year old son not having seen or heard of it before but because it was a Mr. Christie award winner and that was good enough for me. I thought an advent book would be yet another lovely way to celebrate the coming of Christmas. This book charmed and captivated me from the start. The story suceeded in every way to earn and hold my ...

A Lot to Like In This Beautifully Illustrated Book
The vintage postcards shown on each page are wonderful to see. The artwork by Bruce Roberts is distinctly different from the postcard art and is appealing in a different way. The text by Kevin Major is light but conveys deep meaning and emotion without being cloyingly sentimental. Anyone who loves old Christmas postcards and rich children's book illustration will find this book to be ...
