A masterpiece.
In the beginning there was ether. Then Maxwell discovered his wonderful equations and Einstein, drawing inspiration therefrom, discovered Relativity. There was no longer an ether. Thank God! For, before, every electric, magnetic and optical phenomenon was supposed to be explained by properties of this ubiquitous ether. For a brilliant account of the physics of the ether, read "Aether", by Maxwell ...

Masterly treatment of the subject
This is a very good book on non-relativistic quantum mechanics by an acknowledged master of theoretical physics. Almost every sentence is meaningful and well thought out. However this book is not meant for a novice who wishes to study the subject for the first time. Landau's unique perspectives on this subject (as well as others in his famous Course of Theoretical Physics) is best appreciated by ...

Marvellous
If one wants to understand Quantum Mechanics then she or he should read this book.

Fortunately... not Timoshenko
Timoshenko's book is a collection of exercises. Landau's book is a collection of ideas.

A lucid treatment by a true master
Landau and Rumer do an excellent job of explaining the basics of relativity. You will be hard pressed to find any book that explains these ideas more clearly or succinctly. Finally, the treatment itself demonstrates the power of theory and experiment in its ability to overturn our most closely held intuitions.

An Important Book in Physics
Landau & Lifshz "Course of Theoretical Physics" is a famous and respected set of books in Physics. Unfortunately, Butterworth-Heinemann, who currently prints those books in English, prints them with very poor quality. The books seem to be "printed" in old copy machines and the paper used is also a cheap one. In many pages, it is really hard to read the text, due to such poor printing.

The work of a master
Landau's approach to Classical Field Theory demonstrates his ability to be clear, concise, and elegant without drowning out the physics with math. I will say, however, that Landau requires a certain maturity to appreciate his style (same goes for Rudin's books of analysis). I would recommend this title to those with a working knowledge of classical E & M, vector/tensor analysis, and of special ...

Excellent
This book was recommended as a supplimentary text for our mechanics course. This book is 100% better than any other mechanics book I've looked at. The explanations are very clear, especially for non-inertial & rotational reference frames and the derevations for conservation of energy, momenta, and angular momenta (integrals of motion). Includes extensive section on Euler angle derivation and ...

A Prerequisite for the other Volumes in this Series
I bought this volume to help see me through the last half of volume II of this series, and it did the job well. This is the complete introduction to advance mechanics, the first of nine volumes and the perfect prerequisite and complement to the larger volume II, on the "Classical Theory of Fields." It is short, sweet and very understandable. The introduction to tensors is the best ...

Theory and applications presented with great skill
This is an outstanding book. The former students of the great Russian physicist Lev Landau wrote a text based on his teaching and his papers, as well as on their own work. The result fits well in the magnificent Theoretical Physics course that carries the names of Landau and Lifshitz. There are differences between this text and the western analogues. Dirac equation is derived in a very elegant ...
