Dessert University: More Than 300 Spectacular Recipes and Essential Lessons from White House Pastry Chef ...12 reviews
Roland Mesnier, Lauren Chattman

Simon & Schuster, 2004

Pastries are great, instructions even greater
Pastries & dessert making isn't my greatest skill. So I bought this book hoping to find at least a handful of easy to make desserts. I was surprised to find most recipes quite easy to follow. I still have a long way to go making them look good, but at least my pastries taste good for a change.

Local Breads: Sourdough and Whole-Grain Recipes from Europe's Best Artisan Bakers17 reviews
Daniel Leader, Lauren Chattman

W. W. Norton, 2007

One of my favorite bread books!
I love this book, I've made a few breads from this book, and they all came out great! (with minor flaws because of my inexperience) What I really like is the care with which the book is written: -it's very easy to understand for someone who never made bread before (like me), and written with almost motherly care meant to explain the process to the last detail without over-complicating it. ...

Lauren Chattman

Harvard Common Press, 2005

It's Hot Out Today, a Dessert from the Icebox Sounds Good
With the temperature the way it is today, anything from the icebox seems better than things that comes from the oven. Then when I started looking at the pictures of thing made with puddings, ice cream, cookies, cakes, pies, tarts, oh dear! The basic rules here are: minimal cooking (sometimes a stovetop for a few minutes), easy to find ingredients (is there anywhere in the country, even the ...

Lauren Chattman

William Morrow Cookbooks, 2000

Great Gratification!
I often begin to think about making dessert too late and wind up just serving ice cream. But this book really makes quick dessert making easy! A minimal amount of ingredients are needed -- most are probably already in your pantry -- and they can be made just before dinner or even while the family is eating the main course. Great taste for miminal effort. And great ideas for doing new recipes ...

Roland Mesnier's Basic to Beautiful Cakes4 reviews
Roland Mesnier, Lauren Chattman

Simon & Schuster, 2007

Almost perfect
Chef Mesnier presents numerous recipes and techniques for some spectacular cakes, and his descriptions make them all accessible for even the average baker. You'll be able to turn out some real show-stoppers at your next dinner party or birthday celebration! As mentioned, the book's only downside is that it's skimpy on the photos (the Princess Mary cake photo is particularly drool-worthy); ...

Lauren Chattman

William Morrow Cookbooks, 2000

I love this book!
This is one of my favorite cookbooks! The recipes are simple yet elegant. The salads, sandwiches, dips and appetizers contain interesting flavors, yet barely take any time to prepare. This is such a great book to use for throwing spur of the moment get- togethers.

Icebox Pies7 reviews
Lauren Chattman

Harvard Common Press, 2002

Beautiful Cookbook!
I collect cookbooks and this is one of the best! It's easy to follow and the "no-bake" recipes are just outstanding. I truly love the photography in this book (by Duane Winfield--an obvious talent). The strawberry cheese cake pie on page 36 is-to-die-for and so simple! My pie almost looked as good as Mr. Winfield's picture!

Yes, this is this is by the Daniel Leader who wrote Bread Alone and Local Breads, two incredible books on authentic artisan bread baking. The Gingerbread Architect: Recipes and Blueprints for Twelve Classic American Homes1 review
Susan Matheson, Lauren Chattman

Clarkson Potter, 2008

Don't be fooled by the word Architect in the title
I assumed that when the title said Architect that it contained blueprints for gingerbread houses that might show how to create true 2 floor gingerbread houses, that is those having a real second floor as well as interior design. Sadly, this book just contains simplistic facades of various types of houses, and none of them are particularly special. I was also suprised at how sloppily decorated ...

Lauren Chattman

Cookbooks, 1999

Very Impressive
I am very impressed with this book. The wide variety of recipes and types of food that you can make with boiling is fascinating. I never expected to be able to cook so much with just a pot (or two) and a stove top. Very few of the recipes require anything exotic so most of the ingredients are on hand when you are ready to whip up something good. The directions are clear and easy to follow. The ...
