Dancing with Rose: Finding Life in the Land of Alzheimer's54 reviews
Lauren Kessler

Viking Adult, 2007

Unforgettable! A "Must-Read"
"Dancing With Rose" ("Finding Life in the Land of Alzheimer's") was one of the most tender, poignant and moving stories I've ever encountered. On so many levels, it is memorable. I don't have any personal experience (yet) with Alzheimer's, but this book has prepared me to embrace it in a different way than I certainly would have. I applaud Lauren's courage to admit her fears and weaknesses ...

My Teenage Werewolf: A Mother, a Daughter, a Journey Through the Thicket of Adolescence

In seventh- and eighth-grade classrooms, at home, online, at the mall, and at summer camp, Kessler observes, investigates, chronicles- and ...

Stubborn Twig: Three Generations in the Life of a Japanese American Family (Oregon Reads)14 reviews
Lauren Kessler

Oregon State University, 2008

Best non-fiction book I have read in about ten years
Even if you think you are informed about the internment of Japanese- Americans during WWII, this will surpise you. The personal, cultural and historic are perfectly blended. This is primairly a human story and a tragic one.

When Words Collide: A Media Writer's Guide to Grammar and Style (Wadsworth Series in Mass Communication and ...2 reviews
Lauren Kessler, Duncan McDonald

Wadsworth Publishing, 2007

This book is wrong.
I don't care who you are, you don't end a sentence in a proposition. Ever. My mom likes me to. Nope. Sorry. Doesn't work. This book is full of retardisms just like that. Don't purchase it unless you're being quizzes on its specific contents as our professor did. But that's probably only because she's foreign and can't speak English anyway. Gotta love the university system. :D

The Dissident Press: Alternative Journalism in American History (Commtext Series)
Lauren Kessler

Sage Publications, Inc, 1984

Kessler challenges the idea that the worlds of media and journalism have ever conformed to the 'free marketplace' image they were supposed to. There has always been restrictive entry. Groups therefore come together to exclude others from their marketplace. The result is that we seldom find free and open exchange of ideas in well-established institutions of mass communication. This present volume investigates a handful of the many fringe groups ...

When Words Collide: A Media Writers Guide to Grammar and Style3 reviews
Lauren Kessler, Duncan McDonald

Wadsworth Pub Co, 1995

A great, clear, easy guide to grammar rules, tricks and info.
This book changed my life! I took a class in college from tbe author and this was the textbook. I have been in advertising and marketing for the past 12 years and I use this book all the time. It's so easy to use and the info is really clear. The best part is a guide at tbe back that explains the distinctions between commonly misused words. For Example: farther/further (farther--physical ...

The Happy Bottom Riding Club: The Life and Times of Pancho Barnes13 reviews
Lauren Kessler

Random House, 2000

Rugged Individualist Aviation History
This book is MUST READ for anyone interested in the histories of aviation, of the 1920s, of Los Angeles, of the California desert, and of Edwards Air Force Base in particular. Pancho Barnes is a larger-than-life character. A slightly sad one, in a way, since she spent her way out of fortune into poverty; but, wow, if you are going to burn the candle at both ends, this is the way to do it. ...

Clever Girl: Elizabeth Bentley, the Spy Who Ushered in the McCarthy Era6 reviews
Lauren Kessler

Harper Perennial, 2004

Good, first bio on Liz Bently
Although the life of Elizabeth Bently deserves a bigger book, I enjoyed this first biography of the enigmatic but fascinating commie spy, Elizabeth Bently. The author attempts to explain this Vassar educated American woman who became a Russian spy, but Bently still remains a vague phantom. Since I'm fascinated by that whole period--of Joe McCarthy, Alger Hiss, the shocking presence of real-life ...

Full-Court Press: Season Life Winning Basketball Team Women Who Made it Happen5 reviews
Lauren Kessler

Plume, 1998

Great, in-depth look at the Oregon women's hoop program.
Journalist Kessler takes a college team with little name recognition outside the Pacific Northwest and makes the characters fascinating! From the stubborn coach of the women's basketball team to the ringers from Australia who join the team after the school year begins to the wily lawyer in Atlanta, one wants to know what will happen. I think the reader sees both sides of the picture better than ...
