superior
This entire series of reproductions of the classic Conan comics from the 1960s and 1970s is superior. The details are incredible and the colors are more vivid than in the originals and the paper quality is superior and you will not have to worry about preservation. A great substitute for the originals ( and more affordable).

A voodoo virtuoso. A devil-tainted demi-druid. A half-mad minister. A creature of the crypts, a man-mountain of marble, and a giddy giggling ghoul - these are the horrific heroes who protect the world from forces even more frightening than themselves! Demons, zombies, warlocks, and terrorists - all in these nightmarish narratives from the shocking scarefest of the seventies! Guest-starring Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, and the Thing! Collects ...

Great Stuff
This can hardly be considered an objective review, as this volume contains many of the first comic books I ever bought, some 30+ years ago. Nonetheless, I have to say that the stories in this volume seem to hold up very well over the years. Gerry Conway is my favorite of Marvel's "B-List" writers (compared to Len Wein, Bill Mantlo, et al); Conway's stories zip along at a quick pace and they ...

Spidey at some of his BEST and worst moments!
Once you get past the black & white pages (there is much to be said about how color enhances comicbook artwork), the Marvel Essentials stories really manage to pull you in. Volume 6 has some of Spidey's best storylines ever in Amazing Spider-Man. The pinacle would have to be the character defining two-parter with the Death of Gwen Stacy at the hands of the Green Goblin. Powerful stuff even ...

Claremont's legendary run begins.
This first brick-like volume contains Giant-Size X-Men #1, and then (Uncanny) X-Men #94-131. This is the whole first Chris Claremont/David Cockrum run, and the more sizeable part of the revered Claremont/John Byrne run. There are a lot of "classic" stories here, including the "Phoenix Saga", the debut of Alpha Flight, "Proteus," and the first part of the "Dark Phoenix Saga" (it seems like an odd ...

Well, then look no further than this hardcover volume. All the tales that made him the hottest darling of the comic-reading crowd in the 1980-90s are here. The book starts off with Wolverine's ...

Len Wein and Berni Wrightson create the original Swamp Thing
"Swamp Thing: Dark Genesis" reprints not only the first ten issues of the DC comic but also the short story from 1971's "House of Secrets" #92 that introduced the character. The key thing here is that you have in one trade paperback volume the complete run of artist Berni Wrightson, who created the Swamp Thing along with writer Len Wein. There are actually not one genesis but two in the first ...

A BEVY OF LEGENDARY ARTISTS!
One era/genre of comics that seems to get little attention are the horror comics of the 1970's. For a genre that seemed almost a throwaway back then there certainly were a myriad of titles being produced. DC had House of Secrets, Tales of the Unexpected, Ghosts, Ghost Castle, The Witching Hour, Weird Mystery, Dark Mansion, Phantom Stranger, and of course, The House of Mystery. Funny thing about ...

Defending good taste in comic books
Essential Defenders Volume II: from the very start (the confrontation with Magneto and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in issues 15 and 16, by far the best ones there) to the ending (Tapping Tommy and the Maggia goons in issue 30) it's a hit!!! Fine storytelling and artwork (especially by a certain Mr. Buscema), rather interesting characters and the "non-team status" that made this a supergroup ...

Ghost Rider battles Satan, the ultimate adversary, who unfortunately comes across as a stereotypical, almost comically inept supervillian. A necessary look at the character's origins, but it only got better from here.

The Englehart/Rogers Batman: Batman Evolves
If you have not read these stories, you should first be aware that you know them. Or rather - you know this Batman. From the time these stories debuted, this has been described as the "definitive" Batman. This is Batman as we knew him from the 1970s onward, in comics, in film, on TV. In 1977, these stories were a shocking bolt from the blue: They presented Batman with deadly villains, real ...

The Timeless Standard for Batman
This third volume collects the last portion of the Neal Adams Batman. While the second volume is in and of itself excellent, this volume is indeed superior. Phenomenal writing, superb coloring, quality paper, and timeless art. Present-day comic "artists" still have miles to go before they reach this type of comic storytelling. You get: "Daughter of the Demon": (R'as al Ghul) "Half an ...

MTU Vol. 2 Captures Many Good Memories
As an ex-owner of many of the comics being reprinted in Marvel's Essential series, it is a real treat for me to reread these stories in this format, uninterrupted. While some of the stories presented in this volume are "campy" and "hokey," there are some real gems presented from the early careers of Bill Mantlo and Sal Buscema. In particular, issues #39-40, which contains a plethora of villains ...
