A New Standard
Though many have attempted such a feat, in Myth & Knowing, Leonard and McClure have finally written the foundational textbook for comparative mythologies, and, in doing so, have also created a remarkable text for exploring the transition from oral tradition to written text. As the title suggests, Myth & Knowing moves beyond a simple reiteration of the stories by grouping them into conceptual ...

A must for any student/post-doc in molecular biology
The book is a cookbook collection of procedures and methods in molecular biology. It is written in a pragmatic and didactic fashion so that the understanding of the process is clear. There is a comprehensive list of reagents and solutions. It is well worth the buy!

A Refreshing Change
What's amazing about Michaels is how seamlessly he transitioned from an experimental realist to a master of the realistic short story form. His early stories are marked by a linguistic self-apparency, though he's funny enough to keep it interesting. And, unlike others in this vein, his style is blatantly influenced by Kafka and Beckett. Sometimes the description in the early stories can be ...

Invaluable!
This is probably the most invaluable resource for any mage player or storyteller. It provides alternate rules for both magic and paradox and how to apply mage to alternate historical/fantasy settings. In terms of usability, it is indispensible and probably much better than the Guide to the Traditions.

Thumbs up for a fine job
Leonard Kohl's first book is a fine effort, a splendid purchase for any fan of the big three horror icons who made serials. It is loaded with interesting facts. Where else could you discover that silent comedy star Harry Langdon almost co-starred with Lugosi in THE WHISPERING SHADOW. The book is chock full of rare photos, and they are a genuine treat. Fans of Charle Chan would be happy to ...

Fabulous Evolution of Black Fashion!
This book is really great becuase it emphasizes how crucial a role African-American fashion has played over the years. The photographs in the book are nostalgic-- A visual trip down memory lane as I recalled outrageous fashions from the 70's and 80's. I also went to the Black Style Now exhibit at the Museum of the City Of New York, which was equally fabulous. I think the book finally gives credit ...

Get inside a writer's head and heart
Leonard Michaels' diary is, as they say, a page-turner. He seductively engages the reader in his life and, collaterally, in the lives of his many friends and lovers. As I was reading, I felt like the two of us were having coffee during layover in an airport bar in Minneapolis or Manila, or that we'd been snowbound at a truckstop on Highway 90 out of Bozeman and over boilermakers he was ...

Adventures in living.
Mahatma Gandhi said that we must be the change we wish to see in the world. Through the Integral Transformative Practice (ITP) set forth in this 221-page handbook, George Leonard and Michael Murphy show us how to change the world by first changing our own hearts (p. 194). Leonard is a founder of the Human Potential Movement. Murphy is a founder of the Esalen Institute. Together they have ...

Great book for folk music learning and playing
Folk Songs Of North America I have owned this book since the 1970s and still use it regularly. I play numerous instruments and it is always fun to go to a song and be able to play along while singing the song. This book is a must for anyone playing folk music or old-time bluegrass.

HOT * HOT * HOT
Otto Penzler has knows how to build to a climax, that's for sure, and of all the hot noir anthologies he's put together, this could be the best. Kudos for stating the obvious (aren't all women dangerous?). Two of the stories in this anthology (BORN BAD & HIS LORD AND MASTER) are up for Edgar Awards in 2006, and that's just the tip of the...iceberg, so to speak. Laura Lippman's story might be ...

Ian Myles Slater on: Ancient Handbook of Ancient Myth
This is one of several translations of an ancient (date disputed) compilation of summaries of stories of the gods and heroes of Greece (but not Rome), based, where it can be checked, on excellent sources. If the name of the author is correct, he cannot be the "Apollodorus the Grammarian" to whom the work used to be attributed, but given the lack of fraudulent internal claims, the bare name seems ...

Great reference book
I highly recommend this text for third year medical students. It properly assumes that the third year medical student knows next to nothing about clinical medicine and proceeds to explain abbreviations, commonly used drugs, procedures, protocols on rounds, and a whole host of useful things needed to survive and thrive in the hospital setting. I used it not only in medical school, but during my ...

Much more than an exhibition remembrance
For the celebration of the 350th anniversary of Jewish life in America, the Library of Congress mounted an extraordinary exhibition which closes in Washington DC this month. This beautiful and thought-provoking book accompanies that exhibition, but it stands on its own as an excellent compilation of essays by some of the greatest scholars of the American Jewish experience today. The book is ...

Not only is this book an imaginative story about an engineer's vivid imagination, but it also highlights potential benefits from integrating and enabling organizational data systems.
