Wonderful, enchanting, informative
I had been looking for a book of monastaries and convents which were open to visitors and offered retreats. Sanctuaries was just what I had been searching for! I visited St. Joseph's Abbey in Massachusetts, based on the description given in this book, and was pleasantly rewarded. This is a wonderful book for anyone looking for a simpler way of looking at our complicated lives.

Beautiful and diverse Table Blessings
This book is both a delight to the eyes and spirit. The graces are done in beautiful (but very legible) calligraphy and include an incredibly diverse group of table blessings. Although Christian blessings are slightly in the majority, everything from Sufi to Lakota Indian to Buddist are included. Each blessing is short but full of punch. Some have physical instructions (as one beautiful one ...

Works If You Eat Alone
After realizing how rote saying grace had become for me, especially since I eat most of my meals alone, the glorious graces in this book helped me center and use this sacred time to make a heartfelt connection. Also, I began to praise things I'd never considered before (like the sacrifices made by individuals, animals, plants, etc.) that went into the making of the meal. It is an absolutely ...

The book to travel with!
I was surprised to find such a wonderful book covering the information I always want when traveling: unique places to stay, a little about the unusualness of a town or city. I especially like the review about a little place in Davie, Fla, gave the history as well as a overview of what they did.The book made me think about actually visiting some of these wonderful locations! But, as usual ...

Give you information that's often hard to come by
I found this book in the small gift shop attached to the New Camoldolese Hermitage high above the town of Lucia on California's Big Sur Coast. For those looking for a place to retreat from the interruptions of everyday life, a monastery, hermitage, abbey, retreat center or sanctuary can?t be beat. Whether you're seeking a quiet place to finish The Great American Novel or a place to find spiritual ...

Heavenly Feasts: Memorable Meals from Monasteries, Abbeys, and Retreats
Marcia M. Kelly
Harmony
, 1996
Gathered from across the country, these 146 recipes put to rest the notion that monks--and visitors to retreats--live on bread and water. On her sojourns throughout the world, Kelly has collected recipes from world-class master chefs and French nuns, preserving family traditions in both simple and elaborate meals. Here she shares them with readers, accompanied by descriptions of the places where she discovered them. 37 ink impressions.
