Practical Guide to Fedora and Red Hat Enterprise Linux, A (4th Edition)
Mark G. Sobell

Prentice Hall PTR, 2008

Praise for A Practical Guide to Red Hat® Linux®, Second Edition   ?Since I?m in an educational environment, I found the content of Sobell?s book to be right on target and very helpful for anyone managing Linux in the enterprise. His style of writing is very clear. He builds up to the chapter exercises, which I find to be relevant to real-world scenarios a user or admin would encounter. An IT/IS student would find this book a valuable ...

A Practical Guide to Red Hat Linux 810 reviews
Mark G. Sobell

Addison-Wesley Professional, 2002

Terrific
For the past several years, I have been using Mark Sobell's previous Linux book for an introductory UNIX class I teach, but it was getting out of date. So I'm very excited to have this new edition. But he has done more than just update it, he has added several new chapters and somewhat reorganized it. The first section, GNU/Linux Basics, is a perfect introduction to UNIX, everything you need to ...

A Practical Guide to UNIX(R) for Mac OS(R) X Users5 reviews
Mark G. Sobell, Peter Seebach

Prentice Hall PTR, 2005

From the ground up
This is the book I've been looking for. Not just 'OS X for Unix Geeks' or 'OS X in a Nutshell', I wanted more. As much as possible, in one resource. 1000+ pages signaled a big yes. I have yet to read it all the way through, but so far this is a very good guide for those who want not only to learn the general 'Unix way' of computing, but dive under the surface of OS X and examine its ...

A Practical Guide to Red Hat(R) Linux(R): Fedora(TM) Core and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (3rd Edition)15 reviews
Mark G. Sobell

Prentice Hall PTR, 2006

Chose it for my class
I teach a class on Linux and chose this book for several reasons 1. price - Linux 'textbooks' run around $150 2. more than enough good material to fill a semester 3. Sobell's books are consistently the most readable I have seen - topics are explained well in a style that is interesting - a rarity in tech books

A Practical Guide to Solaris34 reviews
Mark G. Sobell

Addison-Wesley Professional, 1999

They should all be this easy to follow
I bought this book for work when I needed to know alot about Solaris in a hurry. It quickly got me up to speed and has since carried me through two undergraduate Unix programming courses. The text is written in plain language, and is supported by excellent examples. When I didn't know how to read the man pages, Mark Sobell's book came through for me. If I could only have one book on Unix, ...

A Practical Guide to Ubuntu Linux(R)13 reviews
Mark G. Sobell

Prentice Hall PTR, 2007

A complete guide to Ubuntu Linux for beginning to intermediate users
Finding a single book that encompasses what you want to learn can be difficult. Most cover a few portions of a subject in depth and skim over (or omit) others. Other books will cover each topic at about the same level: high enough to give an impression of what can be done, but not with enough depth to do it without a lot of effort. Mark G. Sobell's "A Practical Guide to Ubuntu Linux" is a single ...

UNIX System V: A Practical Guide (3rd Edition) (Benjamin Cummunings Series in Computer Science)7 reviews
Mark G. Sobell

Addison Wesley, 1994

One of the best Unix books in the 1990's
I used this book many years ago. The book is good and can be used as reference. It is still relevant in today's world. It does provide you a solid background on UNIX System.

A Practical Guide to Linux(R) Commands, Editors, and Shell Programming44 reviews
Mark G. Sobell

Prentice Hall PTR, 2005

A book that will help you become a Linux command line guru
This is a book that I have been looking for for a long time. I have been looking for a book that takes me into the command line world of Linux but in a methodical way describing all the little options, tips, tricks but also the principles that make Linux shell so powerful. Book begins with a brief history of Linux and very informative, relevant overview of the system architecture. It ...

Practical Guide to the UNIX System, A (3rd Edition)11 reviews
Mark G. Sobell

Addison Wesley, 1994

Still my favorite reference
I agree with many of the reviewers (esp rpclark), in saying that this is a wonderful introductory book. I can further add that I have owned this book for 5+ years and it is still the reference I refer to most often. I believe, a particular strength of Sobell's book is that it was useful to a newbie and is still useful at the sys admin level.

A Practical Guide to Linux26 reviews
Mark G. Sobell

Addison-Wesley Professional, 1997

Perfect for newbies
I have been looking for a beginner's book for Linux for a long time. This is the third book on Linux I have purchased. I wish I had bought this one first. This book has everything for someone who is new to Linux. It gives detailed descriptions of the utilities, the shells, how to use different text editors as well as networking. It doesn't go over the installation process; you can get ...
