The Meaning of the Body: Aesthetics of Human Understanding
Mark Johnson
University Of Chicago Press
, 2007
In The Meaning of the Body , Mark Johnson continues his pioneering work on the exciting connections between cognitive science, language, and meaning first begun in the classic Metaphors We Live By . Johnson uses recent research into infant psychology to show how the body generates meaning even before self-consciousness has fully developed. From there he turns to cognitive neuroscience to further explore the bodily origins of meaning, thought, ...

Applicable to many disciplines
I read this book back in the 90s while I was studying psycho-linguistics as an undergrad and then grad student. My linguistic interest aptly augmented my interest for roles in information technology - implementation and management (ie communication principles, hierarchical, object-oriented, top-down, bottom-up, etc analysis and implementation are all good examples of applied abstraction, which ...

Good follow up to first book
This book continues the work from the first volume with more snippets of info from classical tantric texts made accessable for the western reader. The reader is then free to do more detailed reading/study of the classical texts if they wish on their own. The authors do make an effort to present their ideas in a way that is "gender inclusive" so if you are gay, straight, queer, of have a ...

Linguistic and Philosophy together.
This is a scholarly work with all the bases covered. What Western Philosophy is from Descartes to Kant to modern philosophy and how this changes things. The linguistics and philosophy are both presented in very accessible language so that no background in either is a prerequisite. It is a very readable work for the non-scholar. Good read.

It's the best desert hiking and survival book..
The Ultimate Desert Handbook is the best book on desert hiking and survival I have found, and I have read them all. That's not just my opinion, but also that of all my friends who like to backpack and hike in the desert. Unlike other books that claim to cover the subject of desert hiking and survival, this one actually does so. Water, acclimatizing the body, clothing and equipment, navigation, ...

An amazing anthology
I bought this anthology for Ginn Hale's novella, Feral Machines-- and it was a great sci-fi read-- but it wasn't the only outstanding story. Erin MacKay's novella ,Crossing the Distance, was smart, and heart-wrenching in a very good way. She took the whole concept of Soul Mates and built an amazing world around it. Astrid Amara's two stories were both wonderful; Lord Ronan's Shoes had ...

The Best Tantra Book You'll Ever Read
Whether you are simply curious about Tantra, already know something about it, or are already knowledgeable, this is the book for you. i loved this comic book!
mark hamill is soooo talented! he can not only pull my attention into the big and little screens, but also to this comic book. i love the fact that he drew some of the pictures himself. the story is a little awkward. a hero made solely by the media, who in reality is basically a stalker. i love this book, and mark hamill!
Everyday Life and Politics in Nineteenth Century Mexico : Men, Women, and War

Making Sense of "Los Aņos Olvidados"
For all its historical riches, the nineteenth century, particularly the first half, is a period in Mexican history neglected by historians for far too long. Almost forty years ago, Nettie Lee Benson lamented the lacunae when she stated that much was yet to be learned about what actually happened during the period between 1810-1857. Fifteen years ago the refrain was much the same when Eric Van ...

So-So Avengers Adventure
Having read some of the original issues when this series first came out in the early 90s, I decided to pick up the assembled stories in the 2 Galactic Storm volumes... and now I wish I hadn't. Frankly, they're exactly what you'd expect from a 90s Marvel crossover- there's a loud of loud noise, mindless action and disjointed plot threads. I'm as big a fan of action and loud noise as the next comic ...

Essential read for designing J2EE applications
A must read for seasoned professionals and those new to the subject. Invaluable insights and guidelines are detailed at every tier of architecting a J2EE enterprise application. I found myself frequently relating to the examples and wishing I had read this book to help with earlier projects. This would have saved hours of re-factoring because the authors have already detailed solutions to ...

Insightful and informative
It has been two years since I read this book, but I see it hasn't had a review yet, and I think it deserves one, so I add my two bits. Provides tremendous insight into the social mechanisms at play, and the interplay of contemporary political movements with the traditional power structures in ...

Once upon a time there was a comic universe, large and diverse, filled with just about any type of character from any type of pulp genre, and they shared and interacted in the same universe. You had a Martial Arts character named Shang Chi living in the same world as the cosmic space fantasy Silver Surfer who fought against the supernatural thriller Dracula who appeared in the socially conscious ...

Profound and thorough exposition of embodied philosophy and Cognitive Linguistics
Of the work in embodied philosophy and cognitive linguistics, this by far the most careful, cogent, and through exposition. It is not light reading--it assumes a high level of education and a high degree of familiarity with Western philosophy, but it is profoundly rewarding. Johnson develops a theory of image schemas as the preconceptual links between our embodied experiences and our ...
