Biting the Moon46 reviews
Martha Grimea

Wheeler Publishing, 1999

Don't Listen to the Negative Reviews.
I'm glad I read this book before its predecessor, Rainbow's End, because I might have believed all the amazingly bad reviews here. Inspector Jury needs to be placed before a jury and found guilty for being boring. True, I found both Andie and Mary a bit too mature for teenagers, and they both got lucky too often, but I found their special and fast bond as two eccentric loners touching and ...

The Man with a Load of Mischief21 reviews
Martha Grimes

Headline Book Publishing, 1991

WOMAN WITH A LOAD OF STYLE
This is the first of the Inspector Jury mysteries. My own debut with the series was one of the most recent books, Winds of Change. I enjoyed that greatly, but I found the large cast of characters a bit of a strain on the memory, so I next chose the first of all, expecting to be introduced to the main characters in a systematic way. To some extent I have been, but Ms Grimes doesn't really do ...

The Winds of Change: A Richard Jury Mystery29 reviews
Martha Grimes

Thorndike Press, 2005

What Child Is This?
I've avoided the last few Richard Drury mysteries because Martha Grimes loves to finish on a depressing note and I haven't been much in the mood for that recently -- I think I'm getting soft. But, without doubt Grimes is one of the finest detective story writers working today, so it is inevitable that I would eventually put aside my finicky attitude and read another one. I chose the Winds of ...

HELP THE POOR STRUGGLER12 reviews
MARTHA GRIMES

HEADLINE BOOK PUBLISHING LTD, 1990

Love, money, and revenge
This is an Onyx 2005 reprint of a 1985 novel. It is a little on the dark side, and a change of pace from the author's early novels in the Jury/Plant series. No side excursions into Long Piddleton, or side issues about flashers. Perhaps the author was developing a more serious side. You do need to read some of the earlier novels to understand the Jury and Plant characters. The story starts ...

Dust: A Richard Jury Mystery79 reviews
Martha Grimes

Doubleday Large Print Home Library Edition, 2007

A lot of fun
I have not read many books by Martha Grimes: besides this book, perhaps only Foul Matter and I am the Only Running Footman. So, I can't comment on the consistency of the series. I liked those novels, however, and enjoyed this one just as much. The plot is well-done and remains clear in spite of a profusion of sub-plots. I enjoyed the sub-plots no less than the main plot. Particularly fun is ...

The Anodyne Necklace10 reviews
Martha Grimes

Onyx, 2004

Healing emerald necklace
Anodyne Necklace. This is the third novel in the Richard Jury of Scotland Yard detective series. The first novel in the series is Man With a Load of Mischief and the second is Old Fox Deceived. Each book in this long running series is named after an actual pub in Great Britain. The character development is the best feature of this book, with my favorite character being Melrose Plant, ...

THE OLD CONTEMPTIBLES8 reviews
MARTHA GRIMES

HEADLINE BOOK PUBLISHING LTD, 1991

Curry and Grimes are magic!
In #11 of the Jury-Plant mysteries, finds Jury a suspect himself! The delightfully droll British Mysteries - named after Brit Pubs - see this one taking place in the beautiful Lake District. Jury is considering marriage with a widow Jane Holdsworth. Things become complicated when son Alex finds Jane dead. At first it's deemed a suicide, but it becomes clear it was murder. Since Jury is a suspect, ...

The Case Has Altered (A Richard Jury Novel)27 reviews
Martha Grimes

Headline Book Publishing, 1998

Melrose takes the case!
I missed Jury a bit during this read but Melrose is fabulous. This is a wonderful story, taking place out in the fens, filled with a fascinating cast including Jury's true love, Jenny, who's a suspect for murder, a little girl who lives in a barn with posters of old rock starts, the little girl's Aunt, a woman who has a mystery held over from many years previous, disappeared children... and of ...

I Am the Only Running Footman9 reviews
Martha Grimes

Headline Book Publishing Ltd, 1988

Bonded
The deceased, Sheila Broome, lived in Exeter. Racer disturbed Richard Jury to call him to the crime scene. It is another death, that of Ivy Childess, that causes Wiggins to make the conection between Ivy Childess and Sheila Broome because of the manner of death. As connections are teased out laboriously by everyone including Melrose Plant and Marshall Trueblood, it is determined that the ...

The Old Fox Deceiv'd6 reviews

Curry and Grimes a winning combination
A beautiful woman lies dead, her blood covering her party costume, and smearing her Harlequin face paint. She is a stranger, so not only do people wonder who killed her, but why kill a stranger? The Deer Leap7 reviews
Martha Grimes

Onyx, 2005

This One Packs an Emotional Punch
The Deer Leap, by Martha Grimes, is the 7th book in this excellent series. This entry introduces us to the lovely and eccentric Carole-Ann Palutski who will become Jury's neighbor and friend. This setting for this moving novel is Ashdown Dean, and its local pub The Deer Leap. Mysterioulsy, people and pets have been disappearing or meeting their accidental demise. A local fox hunt takes place ...

The Old Wine Shades (Richard Jury Novels)94 reviews
Martha Grimes

Signet, 2007

Very disappointed long time MG fan
I'm a long time fan of Martha Grimes, Richard Jury, Melrose Plant and the entire crew. This book was a BIG disappointment. I hung on through the anthropomorphism of Mungo (the dog) which really tested reality. I was waiting for that surprising, clever ending that would make everything worthwhile. It didn't come. The story just stopped. Nothing....all of a sudden an epilogue that didn't wrap ...

Dakota: A Novel19 reviews
Martha Grimes

Viking Adult, 2008

Andi, amnesiac and drifter, is still running from her only memory
Renee Raudman has performed on film, TV and radio alike and her experienced voice lends high drama to this sequel to Grimes' BITING THE MOON, best enjoyed by prior fans of the novel. Here Andi, amnesiac and drifter, is still running from her only memory - of an event in a Santa Fe bed-and-breakfast. In Dakota she gets a new job - and begins to uncover the truth about her work place and its sister ...

The Old Silent
Very well written and enjoyable. Inspector Jury and his eccentric friends are always delightful.

Jerusalem Inn11 reviews
Martha Grimes

Onyx, 2004

Charm, Atmosphere, Wit, Jury & Plant = Great Grimes
I have read the first nine books in the Richard jury/Melrose Plant series. I have enjoyed each very much. The Jerusalem Inn took me back to The Man with a Load of Mischief in that the snow covered landscapes are the perfect setting for the plot, twists, and curves with which Grimes fills each novel. This is a series to be savored.

The Horse You Came In On,16 reviews
Martha Grimes

Knopf, 1993

the mysterious delight of story telling
Martha Grimes' mysteries, all of them, stand in an ordered rank on my bedroom shelves. She's a writer whose stories are worth reading and then re-reading. The puzzle is nearly always interesting and satisfactorily worked out. But that's not the real delight of the novels, only the entertaining excuse for two other more compelling reasons to read her. First, there's her Pickwickian cast of ...

The Grave Maurice54 reviews
Martha Grimes

Viking Adult, 2002

A wonderful, thought provoking book
This is a book which grabs your attention from the beginning. I had avoided it because I thought the subject matter would bother me. I can't stand to read about animals in pain. But I managed to persevere and really enjoyed it. I have to confess that I hated the ending, but I could see how it fit the book. I have looked up Premarin on the internet. It is as awful as portrayed in the book. Humans ...
