From Publishers Weekly
The loss of innocence, the urgency of sexual need and the persistence of inner demons unite these three fine novellas, further evidence of the wide-ranging imagination, ironic humor and incisive characterization Faber displayed in The Crimson Petal and the White. Siān, in "The 199 Steps," is working on an archeological dig in England when she encounters Mack, a gorgeous fitness buff. As Siān and ...

A laugh-out-loud funny book about one serious lady!
Masterpiece? Greatest English novel? Well, I don't know about that -- it's very good, but it's not perfect. But it is funny, and it's a page-turner. Our heroine, Dorothea, is an intellectual stuck in a very provincial town, and she just wants someone she can have an intelligent conversation with, and whom she can help do some kind of serious work. A very marriageble but not especially bright ...

CREEPY...SINISTER...MACABRE...STUNNING...
This is the Spanish text edition of a wonderfully inventive novel, "Under the Skin", which is strangely compelling. It cuts across many genres, as it certainly qualifies as literary fiction, horror, satire, suspense, science fiction, and fantasy. It is extraordinarily riveting in its telling, propelled by a narrative that is all at once creepy, faintly sinister and macabre, as well as, at times, ...

Falling For Farber
Michael Faber first captivated me with his novel, The Crimson Petal and The White. In his collection of short stories entitled, Some Rain Must Fall he again demonstrates his flair for character development and incredibly descriptive writing. However, what struck me in this collection is that he writes about the modern day headlines that dog society. Obesity, eating disorders, violence in ...

Short stories with feeling.
If you like short stories, this is an excellent collection. Some are throw aways, but most are gems. Read Andy Comes Home, and Serious Swimmers. I was in tears by the end of both of these stories. Their descriptiveness and depth were perfect for my imagination to see the world of these characters and their lives. I am a film major and plan on using one of these stories as my student film! ...

More Crimson Petal, Thank Goodness
For those annoyed by the abrupt ending of Michel Faber's Crimson Petal and the White, this will hopefully be somewhat soothing. While not a linear sequel, there are glimpses of the later lives of Agnes, William, Sugar and Sophie. Several short stories illuminate episodes from their lives, written in Faber's continuously brilliant style. The highlight is the final story in the collection, ...

Finally...
Finally a book that rises to meet the insatiable demands of even the most critical literature scholar. Michel Faber should be given a title for this amazing contribution to historical literature.

Sian, tired of nightmares in which she meets a grisly end, decides she needs to get out more. Joining an archaeological dig at Whitby Abbey, she uncovers a mystery involving a long-hidden murder. Faber's novella is in turn thriller, romance, ghost story and meditation on the nature of sincerity.

This is a great first novel
. The story telling is strong and fluid and the twists and turns caught me off guard, which is not easy to do. I recommend reading it without any preconceived ideas about plot direction and ending. If you don't normally read first works, this will be a good exception to your rule.

Memorable and lush...
It has been many years since I read this, and I still occasionally think on the characters as if they were people I once knew and wonder what's become of them. Often graphic, often disturbing, always consuming. Highly recommended. If you find endings which are even remotely ambiguous to be unbearable, then maybe it's not for you. The soft end to this is what has cemented it in my memory. I ...
