A wonderful goodnight book
My children received this book as a gift when they were small, and I have tried to buy it as a gift for others - I am delighted to see it is available! The illustrations are lovely, and the text has the same rythmic, soothing quality as the best bedtime books. As far as I am concerned, "Sun's Asleep" ranks right up there with "Goodnight, Moon."
Flight and Bliss

Great drama works
Bulgakov is beloved for his novel "Master and Margarita", a surreal working of the Faust legend set in Stalinist Russia. These two plays "Flight" and "Bliss" show Bulgakov's real forte--drama. He authored plays (not published in his lifetime) and worked as a stage director (an assistant director, all he was allowed by the Soviet government, who knew him for an independent thinker.) Both plays are ...

Wonderfully soothing nighttime story for toddlers+
My kids recently fought over who would get this book in their personal bookcase. My boy is 5, my girl 3! Even little boys who like to watch action shows during the daytime and make guns out of tinkertoys will enjoy being put to sleep with this book...it is soothing and repetitive, and calmed both my children right down. They have nice bedtime memories, and I could probably read it every ...

SIMPLY IS SOMETIMES BEST. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE TIMES.
Three Kittens, by Mirra Ginsburg is a wonderful little book for the very young. There have been several editions of this work, but the one being reviewed here is the 1973 Crown Publishers, Inc. Edition, and the one I feel is probably the best. This edition has been translated from the original Russian by V. Suteyev and the illustrations are by Giulio Maestro. This, in my opinion is a winning ...

Chinese Mirror Mirrors Life!
This delightful picture book appeals to people of all ages and is a great read-aloud to both children and adults. No one in this Korean family has ever seen a mirror, so no one has ever seen what he/she looks like! When the father brings home a mirror from a business trip and hides it in his trunk, not really knowing what it is, each member of the family sneaks a peek in the mirror, but they ...

My favorite book as a child
This was my all-time favorite book as a child. I still love it's simplicity, as well as the great pictures. My copy is over twenty years old and the colors still pop out at me. Since the cover of my copy is old and dingy, I was looking for a newer copy to give my baby and was really disappointed to see it's out of print. I highly recommend this book, though, if you can find it!

Always charmed
I must've read this book a hundred times to my children and I was warmed and charmed 100 times. Simple, gentle, and way cool illustrations. A winner.

About This Book
Lieutenant Kije & Young Vitushishnikov: Two glittering novellas from a Russian master satirize the abuses of eighteenth and nineteenth century Tsarist regimes, none too ubliquely implicating Stalin himself, in full power when both were written. Fun for the little ones AND the adults.
This is a deceptively simple little story that children aged 2-7 really enjoy hearing over and over. Adults and older children get a kick out of the various facial expressions as the kittens go through their adventures. Three Kittens is fun and it encourages thinking, too - a great combination!

Good Morning, Chick
This is a wonderful book for small children. They will love the main character, the chick, and his adventures. The reader will also enjoy the book and the reaction of the child listening to the story. Very cute and easy to understand. A wonderful introduction to learning about chicks and their mothers.

Bain de Soleil
My mom bought a copy of this book...about 20 years ago. She got it because it reminded me of a sampler she had made depicting chicks in front of a blazing sun. It was one of my top fives as a kid. When I found it again here, I was beside myself. It arrived speedily, and in perfect shape at that. This virtual thrift shopping is a good substitue for the real thing!
The Life of Monsieur De Moliere

A very pro Moliere book that is a pleasure to read.
Mikhail Bulgakov's book The Life of Monsieur de Moliere is a very biased book that is uncritical of the great French writer Moliere. Despite the author's unabashed love of Moliere, the book is a treat from beginning to end. Bulgakov feels an affinity with Moliere because he wrote under a totalitarian regime headed by Stalin in Russia and Moliere wrote during the reign of Louis XIV. Although ...

Forget 1984 or Brave New World
No need for Orwell or Huxley. If you're interested in dystopian science fiction, then this is your bag. It predates those other classic novels, for it was released in 1924, but was subject to much censorship within the Russian realm in which it was rendered. This book is a lot of fun, and carries a lot of the weight those other novels had, but with an extremely fantastic poetic prose, greatly ...

An Analysis of "Heart of a Dog"
If perused only ephemerally, or taken merely at face value, Mikhail Bulgakov's "The Heart of a Dog," is likely to give the reader a false impression of simplicity or childishness; however, if more carefully surveyed in light of the monumental political and historical context in which it was penned, the novel, formally seeming silly or fantastical, reveals itself to be a highly critical analysis ...

A myth, not a satire!
The thing that makes this book so astonishing to read and unique in the range of the Russian and world literature of the 20-th Century is that it's not a comic book as many people mention. Platonov used to be a devoted communist and tried to make up a kind of a soviet mythology similar to Bible mythology but with a different moral approach that would be convinient in the country where there were ...

Great for Early Childhood students.
This book is great for showing how chicks and ducks are the same, and different, in an entertaining way. It is an emergent reader book, that uses repetition and predictability to help young readers along. My Kindergarten class really loves this book. I've seen it in Big Book format, but can't find it here. Oh, well! Buy this one if you don't have it.

It's a shame this book is no longer in print
As I look back, this book is one of my fondest memories. I remember having it read to me as child, knowing the words by heart, the beautiful pictures drawing me into the world of the story. I can still see those pictures in my mind and they bring a smile to my face even now all these many years later. If you can find it for your child either used or in a library, get it. It will be a ...

A GIFT FROM THE GRAVE
I found Mikhail Bulgakov's life terribly sad, as I progressed through this novel, realizing how much of it is autobiographical. Here was a brilliant man---the grandson of Priests, who was obviously quite theologically challenged in atheist Russia. His motif surrounding the existence of Jesus and the Devil, told through stories of Faust and Pontius Pilate, was obviously his personal desire to ...

Superb character development
The underground man is the best-developed character I have come across. A reader can take what they want from this book. Everyone's reaction will vary. I'm sure there are people who won't enjoy it but I can not imagine anyone not finding it thought-provoking

EAT LIKE A HORSE AND MAKE A GOAT OF YOURSELF
. What is it about most traditional East European folk tales? They nearly always have a sinister, sometimes scary story line. "Clay Boy" is no exception. The concept of a clay boy that comes to life is very reminiscent of Pinocchio. An elderly couple known as Grandpa and Grandma are lonely now that their children have grown up. The clay boy is to become their child substitute. There is one big ...
