Healthwise for Life: A Self-Care Guide for People Age 50 and Better1 review
Molly Mettler; Donald W. Kemper

Healthwise, Incorporated, 2007

Healthwise for Life
This book covers everything that you could come across from bee stings to urinary incontinence. It helps answer those basic questions you would normally pay to ask a doctor and refers you to the doctor when the problem is more serious, or the home treatment options haven't helped. Healthwise for Life offers detailed and useful information tailored to people later in life and is an essential ...

The Best American Recipes 2005-2006: The Year's Top Picks from Books, Magazines, Newspapers, and the Internet ...4 reviews

Houghton Mifflin, 2005

Fabulous!
Rarely do I read a cookbook, and I read a lot of them, and think that every single recipe sounds fantastic--this is the exception. A yummy, easy to follow compilation of great recipes! The tips and notes from the authors/cooks after each recipe are practical and time-saving--helpful for both the novice and experienced cook. AND the authors picked their favorites from the favorites and listed ...

All About Braising: The Art of Uncomplicated Cooking37 reviews
Molly Stevens, 2004

This book has made me a better cook
I never knew what braising was when I bought this book. It caught my eye because it was so thick, and I thought "How can there be that much on braising?" Well, I have to say, buying this book has been the nicest surprise in my cooking. I have made the absolute best pot roast ever (I never liked pot roast until I cooked it following Molly's recipes). She does such a terrific job of not only ...

New England (Williams-Sonoma New American Cooking)2 reviews
Molly Stevens

Time-Life Books, 2002

Classic and Updated Regional Recipes
"New England" by Vermont chef Molly Stevens is part of a series of six American regional cookbooks published by Williams-Sonoma. (Others are "Pacific Northwest," "California," "The Southwest," "The Heartland," and "The South." Beautiful color photos of the prepared dishes accompany most recipes. What I like most about this cookbook is the emphasis on classic New England cooking: New England ...

The Best American Recipes 2002-2003 (Best American)27 reviews
Anthony Bourdain

Houghton Mifflin, 2002

McCullough and Hamlin triumph in 1999 and 2000!
This review refers to "Best American Recipes 2000." I noticed that Amazon hasn't always segregated these reviews by year, so I include this information. The review for the 1999 edition is at the bottom, due to Amazon's silliness with this. I have trusted Fran McCullough ever since she co-authored "Great Food Without Fuss," another book full of easy-but-perfect and unusual recipes. I also ...

Cracker: to Say I Love You1 review
Molly Brown, Steven Hartley

ISIS Publishing, 1999

A Series of Novelizations That Improve On the Source
I HATE novelizations. But these done for the great British TV mystery series starring Robbie Coltrane actually improve upon the teleplays, adding rich details and psychological insight to the already intense plots. These books could easily stand alone as a great series of psychological crime novels, unified in tone despite the fact that half a dozen different authors have been involved in their ...

One Potato, Two Potato14 reviews
Roy Finamore, Molly Stevens

Houghton Mifflin, 2001

Colcannon, Pierogies, Vichysoisse, and Samosas oh my
If this is the kind of book an editor of other food writers can give us, then I wish more of these largely invisible literary yeomen would take up the pen to do their own material more often. This is an excellent example of my favorite kind of book. It deals exclusively with recipes based on a single main ingredient. This makes it the book to go to when you have that last pound of spuds in a ten ...

The Best American Recipes 2003-2004: The Year's Top Picks from Books, Magazines, Newspapers, and the Internet ...6 reviews

Houghton Mifflin, 2003

Great Series
This review is of "Best American Recipes 2003-2004." I write this because sometimes a review of a different year gets mixed in by Amazon. Fran McCullough is a longtime cookbook editor with an eye for the tasty recipe and a spot-on reliable palate. How lucky for me to have her reading thousands of recipes a year and testing them so I don't have to. B. Marold's bizarre review prompted me to ...

The 150 Best American Recipes: Indispensable Dishes from Legendary Chefs and Undiscovered Cooks (Best ...9 reviews

Houghton Mifflin, 2006

Excellent
Every recipe I have made out of this cookbook has been a winner -- and I have made several of them, from the Kona Inn banana muffins to the chicken with lemon, sage, rosemary and thyme. The chocolate layer cake, originally printed in Gourmet, truly is the best chocolate cake of all time. I highly recommend this book.

"Andrew, almost eight, wants a dog more than anything . . . but his father won't let him have one. When the boy sees a costume in Mr. Magic's store, he decides that the next best thing to having a dog is being one. Once zipped into the costume, he makes a very convincing golden retriever. . . The Best American Recipes 2004-2005: The Year's Top Picks from Books, Magazines, Newspapers, and the Internet ...3 reviews

Houghton Mifflin, 2004

Collected Country's Recipe Output
Culling the newspapers, magazines, books and Net for recipes to cover range of standardized categories of appetizers, soups, salads, etc. is no easy task. Then to cover diversity of ethnicity, difficulty, etc. is daunting as well. Cut is always tough of what's in, what's out. Nice job of providing range of easy and quick to exotic and time/ingredient/equipment consuming. There are recipes ...

Past Poisons: An Ellis Peters Memorial Anthology of Historic Crime1 review

IBooks, Inc., 2005

Unimpressive
The name Ellis Peters in the title of the book was clearly meant to lure readers. None of the writers are up to her standards. There is no shame in not being a master but it left me feeling a little cheated. There were a couple of stories that I kinda liked but the rest were forgettable except two were downright yucky. And the tributes to Ellis Peters written by each and every author were so ...
