Oscar Wilde

Wordsworth Editions Ltd, 1998

"I Hate It When Everyone Agrees With Me, For Then I Must Consider That I Might Be Wrong"
The title says it all. This is THEE complete works of Ireland's gift to Victorian London. Wilde's plays, essays, poems, his sole novel, The Picture of Dorian Grey, and his last bitter work, De Profundus, (From The Depths) a letter to his lover and betrayer, Lord Alfred Douglas, is re-printed as well. For the price, it's the best way to add this celebrated, tragic wit to your library.

The Picture of Dorian Gray2 reviews
Oscar Wilde

Norilana Books, 2007

"Beauty is a form of Genius."
Oscar Wilde was one of the foremost representatives of Aestheticism, a movement based on the notion that art exists for no other purpose than its existence itself ("l'art pour l'art"), not for the purpose of social and moral enlightenment. Born in Dublin and a graduate of Oxford's Magdalen College, he initially worked primarily as a journalist, editor and lecturer, but gradually turned to writing ...

The Picture of Dorian Gray (Dover Thrift Editions)257 reviews
Oscar Wilde

Dover Publications, 1993

Beautiful and witty
This is a beautiful and witty tale about a depraved man. His ugly soul is mirrored by his ever-changing portrait while he retains his youthful visage. Suspenseful throughout. A classic.

The Importance of Being Earnest (New Mermaids)61 reviews
Oscar Wilde, Russell Jackson

A&C Black, 1980

Brilliantly Funny
This book has remained one of my favorites since reading it in high school ~5 years ago. I have re-read it multiple times, seen it live & as a movie, and never seem to tire of Wilde's excellent knack for satire. It is a quick & fun read full of irony and hilariously awkward situations. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys play-format comedies with strong irony.

The Picture of Dorian Gray - Literary Touchstone5 reviews
Oscar Wilde

Prestwick House, Inc., 2005

Oscar Wilde is a Genius
After reading some of the contemporary reviews of this book, I was more than a little curious to see how awful this book really was. I was skeptical that it could be bad, because I'm very familiar with the wit of Wilde. As far as gothic novels go, this book ranks high in the Victorian era. Looking back from a historical perspective, I can see why the critics of the time disliked it. But from ...

The Happy Prince & Other Stories (Wordsworth Children's Classics) (Wordsworth Children's Classics)3 reviews
Oscar Wilde

Wordsworth Editions Ltd, 1999

Timeless Tales of Great Worth
When I was quite small (I'm now 64) the 33 1/3 records were introduced. One of the first that we got was a recording of "The Happy Prince". It featured Bing Crosby. I listened to it over and over until I went off to college. Years later I was in England, and I discovered that there was a whole book of stories. Over the years I have re-read this book so much that it is now in tatters. Each ...

The Importance of Being Earnest10 reviews
Oscar Wilde

Prestwick House Inc., 2005

The constraints of morality; does absolute confidence really exist???
The play's protagonist Jack makes up an imaginary brother called Earnest, who he uses as an excuse to get out of town and do what he likes, but is too embarrassed to admit he likes. Jack and Algernon are best friends, who amusingly get tangled in the web of being mistaken for Earnest and falling in love with women who are mesmerized by the name Earnest, which as Jack's object of affection ...

The Picture of Dorian Gray1 review
Oscar Wilde

Norilana Books, 2007

one of the great psychological novels
This is one of the greatest stories ever of the struggle and torment between good and evil, between animal versus spiritual influences that resides within our mind and soul . An absolute masterpiece. A more modern version of Dante's inferno.

De Profundis: The Ballad of Reading Gaol and Other Writings1 review
Oscar Wilde

Wordsworth Editions Ltd, 1999

Ballad of Reading Gaol and De Profundis
This edition contains the two best pieces of Wilde's writing. The poem "Ballad" is strong in its sense of poetry and imagery without being sing-songy. De Profundis, while a little difficult to wade through at certain points, simply captures many of life's truths and sets them down in the written word, to be studied, remembered and savored all at once.

All you Wildeans take note: this is the only edition of the plays wherein the lines are properly numbered for specific citation and easy reference: very, very important!!

The Picture of Dorian Gray (Classic Collection (Blackstone Audio))
Oscar Wilde

Blackstone Audio Inc., 2008

Dorian Gray is a handsome young man who falls in with a group of friends whose amoral philosophies he finds quite appealing. After he has his portrait painted, his frivolity and general demeanor degenerate into wickedness, but only the portrait bears the effects of his descent into decadence and serves as a powerful symbol of Gray's internal ruin. Dorian himself, however, remains as young and unspoiled as the day he first sat for the painting. ...

Plays of Oscar Wilde (Wordsworth Classics)5 reviews
Oscar Wilde

Wordsworth Editions Ltd, 2000

Nice Intro by John Lahr
I recommend this collection of Wilde's plays, not only because it has nice, big, clear print (better than some of the other available versions) but because of its wonderfully pithy intro by John Lahr. In fact I just put a John Lahr book in my shopping cart because I liked this intro so much. I finished reading Richard Ellman's 500+ page bio of Wilde the other day, so you wouldn't think I'd ...

Oscar Wilde's Wit and Wisdom: A Book of Quotations (Dover Thrift Editions)5 reviews
Oscar Wilde

Dover Publications, 1998

Unparalleled Wit & Wisdom
"I can resist everything except temptation." "There is no sin except stupidity." "It is only shallow people who do not judge by appearances." "It is always with the best intentions that the worst work is done." These laconic aphorisms are just the tip of the iceberg of Wilde's impressive, yet oftentimes eclectic and nihilistic, use of the English language. Dover gives us 60 pages of brilliant ...

Complete Works of Oscar Wilde (Collins Classics)16 reviews
Oscar Wilde

HarperCollins UK, 2003

If you love Wilde, you MUST own this book!
Though the print is small for those of us over 40, it's worth it - if not, it would weigh about 10 pounds! As it is, it's a tome, but worth reading, and re-reading time and again. It has everything - everything! - that you'll ever hear mentioned - his stories, his novels, his essay's. It would make a great gift for a young writer, as well.

The Happy Prince3 reviews
Oscar Wilde

Fitzhenry and Whiteside, 2001

Excellent beyond compare!!!!
As a child I didn't have the books of Oscar Wilde but rather the records. My imagination soared with his descriptions of life, and my eyes overflowed with tears at each story. The record of the Happy Prince was read by Bing Crosby and Orson Wells and each year at Christmas we still play that old scratched thing, just to hear it's wonderous love story and that of The Selfish Giant. Now I ...

De Profundis - Oscar Wilde
Oscar Wilde

Book Jungle, 2007

. . . Suffering is one very long moment. We cannot divide it by seasons. We can only record its moods, and chronicle their return. With us time itself does not progress. It revolves. It seems to circle round one centre of pain. The paralysing immobility of a life every circumstance of which is regulated after an unchangeable pattern, so that we eat and drink and lie down and pray, or kneel at least for prayer, according to the inflexible ...
