The Children of Odin: The Collected Sagas from the Northern Bible4 reviews
Padraic Colum

CreateSpace, 2009

Great book - loved the style and stories!
I'm always wondering if these are myths or truths? This book brings them all alive and so powerfully presented. Makes a change from the traditional Christian tales. Really enjoyed this book, and I know if you have an interest in Norse and the traditional culture of the time of Thor, you will love this book too!

The Girl Who Sat by the Ashes1 review
Padraic Colum

Collier-Mac., 1968

Cinderella Revisited
This is a fantastic book for those who love faerie tales. The story of Cinderella is expanded upon, giving her an actual personality. It's especially heart-warming that the prince has to do more than match her up with a glass slipper to earn her love and her hand in marriage. I highly recommend this book to anyone who ever wished their beloved childhood faerie tales would never end (or at ...

Nordic Gods and Heroes15 reviews
Padraic Colum

Dover Publications, 1996

Excellent retelling !
This Dover edition is superior the Alladin Publication of "The Children of Odin" simply because it contains the original artwork, albeit in black and white. This a bare bones retelling of Nordic and Teutonic tales - Part 4 is devoted to the Ring of the Nibelungs. Keep in mind that the audience for this book is children and young adults, but is an excellent place to start. Why Amazon chooses ...

A TREASURY OF IRISH FOLKLORE1 review
Padraic (Editor) Colum

Crown Publishers, 1954

Authentically Irish
Padraic Colum's wonderful compendium of all things Irish was my first introduction to my Irish Heritage. I could not have found a better. Under one cover, Colum draws from Irish history, folklore, myth, song and legend to introduce the reader, in a mere 613 pages, to the best of authentic Ireland. First printed in 1944, this volume captures an Ireland that has long since faded into memory. ...

The Adventures of Odysseus & The Tale of Troy: Homer's Great Epics, Rewritten for Children (Illustrated)1 review
Homer, Padraic Colum

Tark Classic Fiction, 2007

A child's introduction to Homer.
Every parent should buy this book for their 8-13 year-old children. Originally published in 1918, it avoids the the excesses of modern-day political correctness while telling these exciting stories in beautiful and simple language. As a child I was so inspired by these tales that I went on to read both many times in full and in different translations. A "Must" for every parent who wants to ...

Great Myths of the World (Dover Books on Anthropology and Folklore)1 review

Dover Publications, 2005

Great collection of myths.
The reason that I'm writing this review is because there was nothing in Amazon to tell me how good this book really was. I was looking for a book that worked as an introduction to a wide variety of myths from around the world. And I must say this is a great collection of myths selected and retold by Padraic Colum. After a brief introduction to mythology around the world, comes the myths. ...

The Children of Odin9 reviews
Padraic Colum

BiblioLife, 2009

Odin's BEST
You will find not only Norse myths in this book, but Teutonic tales as well. The drawings are incredible, as in all children's books. Adults will not be disappointed with this one, and children will be pleased to hear the exciting stories within. A MUST have for Norse mythology book collectors. An oldie but GOODIE! Classic and captivating. What else can I say? . . . I'm buying another one ...

King of Ireland's Son8 reviews
Padraic Colum

Floris Books, 1986

An adventure loved by both children and adults
Our child came home from school one day and excitedly announced that the teacher was reading to the class "the best story," The King of Ireland's Son, by Padraic Colum. After much hunting I finally found the book on Amazon.com. It is a beautifully crafted story full of rich images and detail. The charecters and environments come to life with a sophistication that children and adults both ...

The Boy Apprenticed to an Enchanter1 review
Padraic Colum

BiblioLife, 2009

Perhaps Colum's best, and a grand tale!
This is an original tale by the wonderful Padraic Colum, poet. It recounts the adventures of a boy, taken from his home to learn from a rather sinister enchanter, and his attempts to escape from his apprenticeship. Babylon and its fall, Hermes Tristemagus and Merlin and the Western Isles are just some of the people and places he visits on his way. I am pleased to see that Colum's lovely "King of ...

The Adventures of Odysseus and the Tale of Troy4 reviews
Padraic Colum

CreateSpace, 2009

A Truly Enthralling Read
THE ADVENTURES OF ODYSSEUS AND THE TALE OF TROY is a truly enthralling read. Padraic Colum is a natural story teller, with a gift for transporting readers into a magical land that includes all the magic and drama of The Odyssey and the Iliad, Achilles, Trojans, Scylla, Charybdis, Circe, and Cyclops. Powerful and heroic, this is truly a triumphant book. Colum's writing can be complex for young ...

The Children's Homer28 reviews
Padraic Colum

McMillan, 1946

Challenging but wonderful
Although the language in this book is rather challenging, we still found it accessible and enjoyable. These classic stories can get too "watered-down" in the easier versions, which takes away the richness and depth that has made them classics in the first place. My 12 year old homeschooled son looked at these and Rosemary Sutcliff's Black Ships Before Troy and Wanderings of Odysseus and ...

A Dreamer's Tales and Other Stories9 reviews
Lord Dunsany

The Modern Library, 1917

Dreamers
How neat to be able to easily purchase this great book. Dunsany skillfully weaves his tales so the reader is brought into his world of imagination. His was a unique vision. Each tale still speaks to our world today a message of morality. His worlds are very real.

Myths of the World2 reviews
Padraic Colum

Price Stern Sloan Pub, 2000

What a teachable-moment book!
We love the Beskow books -- for both boys and girls. This one is particularly good as Peter and Lottie "borrow" Mr. Blue's boat and lose an oar. Taking responsibility for their actions, they work to buy a new oar. This is a great story for teaching the habit of responsibility, owning up to our mistakes and forgiveness.

Fairy Tales9 reviews
Jacob Grimm, Wilhelm Grimm

Routledge, 1983

A quality children's book
This beautifully illustrated book is a delight for Brothers Grimm and Arthur Rackham fans. High quality paper is used throughout so the color plates are presented where they occur in each story, instead of being jammed together in the center. The font is easy to read with ample margins, so the stories can be savored without feeling rushed or the aid of a good light. Well done!

The Golden Fleece and the Heroes Who Lived Before Achilles6 reviews
Padraic Colum

Demco Media, 1983

the golden fleece
THE GOLDEN FLEECE The setting of the story is in many places such as Mount Pelion, iolcus, and limos. The characters in the story are Jason, king aeson, Hercules, thesues, the Argonauts, Orpheus, and of course the Greek gods.the conflict in the story is that Jason has to find the golden fleece so his ...

The Golden Fleece3 reviews

EbooksLib, 2004

A thrilled Mom
When I allowed my 9 year old to buy this book, I knew he only wanted it because of the cool 3-headed tiger on the front. Much to my delight, a few hours later he announced to me that this was the coolest book that has ever been written. He spent an entire weekend reading!! This is a child that previously had to be forced to read. This is a great book for boys who have been unmotivated by the ...

The Story of the Golden Fleece (Dover Storybooks for Children)1 review
Padraic Colum

Dover Publications, 2005

compelling & classical storytelling for children
After seeing the campy movie "Jason and the Argonauts," my 7-year old son and I settled down into serious reading of the tale of quest for the Golden Fleece. Padraic Colum was a masterful storyteller--the Irish have that gift--and his language made the myths come alive with a power that kept my son riveted even when he wasn't quite sure what some of the words meant. It wasn't bad explaining to ...

The Story of King Arthur and Other Celtic Heroes1 review
Padraic Colum

Dover Publications, 2005

disappointing on the whole, but Colum/Pogany shine through
As is so often the case with works that endeavor to (yet again) popularize the Celtic mythosystem for readers more intimately familiar with "classical" Greco-Roman tales, this book misses the mark--by a goodly ways. It is fairly difficult to cull any notion of action and excitement (both of which the rear-cover blurb repeatedly hypes) from between the lines, and continuity is the last trait to ...
