Black Coach1 review
Pat Jordan

Dodd, Mead, 1971

The Real Titans
I have no idea whether the movie, "Remember the Titans" was an accurate portrayal of the events depicted in it. Knowing what Hollywood likes to do to such stories, I have my doubts. However, if you want a real, unvarnished account of an African-American coach leading a southern high school football team through its first year of integration, this is the book for you. Black Coach is a ...

Pitching, Revised Edition: The Keys to Excellence (Sports Illustrated Winner's Circle Books)4 reviews
Pat Jordan

Sports Illustrated, 1993

Great Book for younger players
I think that this book is the most complete book about pitching that I have read. It covers the aspects of pitching better that any of the other books I have seen. The only part not written well is the section on conditioning. I thought Nolan Ryan's book did a better job on that aspect of pitching.

A Nice Tuesday9 reviews
Pat Jordan

Bison Books, 2005

Better Than Any Baseball Book
This book is not about baseball, and it is not a sequel to "A False Spring," which was a classic in its own right. It is also not about dogs, cigars, fast cars or South Florida, although all of those things figure prominently in the book. Instead, "A Nice Tuesday" is a deeper, fuller portrait of an unusually talented guy living out his life as best he can despite a nagging feeling that he has ...

The Best Sports Writing of Pat Jordan2 reviews
Pat Jordan

Persea, 2008

SIMPLY AMAZING
I was so anxious to read this book that I paid for expedited shipping. My excitement was spot on. This book is amazing. Pat Jordan is so honest and insightful that I felt as though I knew more about the individuals than before I read the book. There was nothing fluffy in any of the interviews. And although you wonder about the appropriateness of the story on child beauty pageants, it fits in ...

A False Spring18 reviews

Bison Books, 2005

HE PLAYED THE GAME
Those of us who are profesional sportswriters spend a lot of time in press boxes with other writers who criticize what they see on the field, but either never played the game or never played it well. "The Suitors of Spring" is brilliantly written by Pat Jordan, who did play the game. It also brings to mind some of the best sports books ever. "Ball Four's" Jim Bouton played the game. "North ...

Aircraft Wrecks in the Mountains and Deserts of California, 1909-2002 (3rd edition)4 reviews
Gary Pat Macha, Don Jordan

Info Net Pub, 2002

Extremely interesting and completely useless
I was thrilled to find this book (second edition) and anxious to read it and maybe do a little wreck finding here in California. The list of plane types with crash circumstances is extensive and I guess that's nice. My hat is off to the author for his compilation skills. However, this book is billed as a "guidebook to locating historical aircraft crash sites..." which is hardly the truth. ...

The suitors of spring3 reviews
Pat Jordan

Warren Paperback Library, 1974

Just Good Writing
This book is a collection of essays -- long magazine articles -- by a freelance writer who used to be a professional baseball player. His careers (baseball and writing) are documented in his memoirs, A False Spring and A Nice Tuesday. Having read those books first, I had a good insight into the author, which made this book more enjoyable but was not really necessary to appreciate the writing in ...

a.k.a. Sheila Doyle: A Novel of Crime2 reviews
Pat Jordan

Carroll & Graf, 2002

Gritty 'caper' story. Sheila comes into her own
While celebrating her divorce, Sheila Doyle falls for Bobby Roberts, a male stripper who changes her life. With his instructions, she transforms herself from an 40-something ex-actress into a hard-bodied, sexy, blonde player. Together Sheila, Bobby, and minor Jewish gangster Sol Billstein smuggle money, run guns, and look for the illegal angle to make a few bucks. With the added intelligence that ...
