AIDS and Accusation: Haiti and the Geography of Blame4 reviews
Paul Farmer

University of California Press, 2006

Reading this book will change your life
Farmer's excellent historical ethnography of Haitian illness (as seen through the contemporary context of the world AIDS epidemic), proves the necessity of developing anthropological approaches to understanding health systems and implementing medical care. The diagnosis and analysis of sickness, disease, illness, and treatment should go hand-in-hand with the cultural understanding of local ...

Santiago's Children: What I Learned about Life at an Orphanage in Chile12 reviews
Steve Reifenberg

University of Texas Press, 2008

Wonderfully Insightful Book
Reifenberg does a fantastic job with this memoir. The stories of the orphans he works with are engrossing, and his own story is quite interesting to follow as well. He also writes about the brutal dictatorship in Chile which is very much tied to why his orphanage is so important. I would highly recommend this book, especially for people who are interested in international service.

On That Day, Everybody Ate: One Woman's Story of Hope and Possibility in Haiti9 reviews
Margaret Trost

Koa Books, 2008

A brave story with a big heart
Here is a book of great beauty in the truest sense, a brave story with a big heart. Responding to a passing invitation to visit Haiti, the author's "heart spoke and said yes." Her heart had already been blown open by tragedy, which frames this deeply honest and vivid journey into the roots of compassion, and the balance between giving and receiving, as she puts it. The author is called not ...

Myths for the Modern Age: Philip Jose Farmer's Wold Newton Universe11 reviews
Win Scott Eckert, Philip Jose Farmer, ...

MonkeyBrain Books, 2005

Chris Davies is WRONG!
Having read both this book from cover to cover and the reviews that are posted on this sight, I can only conclude that one of the reviewers has an axe to grind with one or more of the writers responsible. Don't let that sway you; this is an excellent book that, yes, occasionally offers up contradictory information - if you take the time to read the introductory portion CAREFULLY, you will note ...

The Uses of Haiti14 reviews
Paul Farmer

Common Courage Press, 1994

Wake up America!
The content, in the beginning, was difficult for a non political/history reader....but before long I was locked in and was amazed...appalled...at the role of our government in keeping the Haitian people in 'slavery' while claiming to support democracy. Life is a political game to which I have closed my eyes for too long! I am ashamed of the underhanded political dealings my government has been ...

Five-Minute Art Ideas: Print Scissors Glue Paint3 reviews

Smithmark Publishers, 1997

Nice Art Book
I bought this book to use with my School Age Child Care Program. The children have loved doing the projects. Don't let the title fool you, the art ideas take longer than five minutes to complete. As one reviewer already stated, these projects only take five minutes to set up. The book is divided into four sections: print, glue, scissors, paint. I am really happy with this purchase!

Developments in Quantitative Investment Models
Ronald N. Kahn, R. Max Darnell, ...

AIMR (CFA Institute), 2001

The field of quantitative investing has changed significantly since 1994, when the last CFA Institute proceedings on the subject was published. Recent developments in the areas of nonlinearities, nonstationarities, and non-normal return distributions have the potential to allow investors to exploit inefficiencies that were previously imperceptible. In this proceedings, the authors survey the state of the art in quantitative investing and ...

EC Tax Law (Oxford European Community Law Library)
Paul Farmer, Richard Lyal

Oxford University Press, 2008

This new edition of EC Tax Law provides a detailed and extensive survey of EC tax legislation and case law. With the generalist lawyer in mind, the volume contains an introduction to VAT and to the basic principles of company taxation. It deals at some length with the legislation and case law on VAT (which is almost completely harmonized at the EC level) and excise duties. In relation to indirect taxation it analyses the case law on Article 90 ...

Getting Haiti Right This Time: The U.S. and the Coup (Read and Reist)8 reviews
Noam Chomsky, Paul Farmer, ...

Common Courage Press, 2004

Crucial to understanding the economic and political crisis in Haiti!
For activists interested in learning more about the recent U.S. military intervention in Haiti which resulted in massive human rights violations and the kidnapping of left-wing president Jean-Bertrand Aristide, this brief anthology of essays and Democracy Now! interviews is an excellent introduction. As the poorest nation in the Western hemisphere, Haiti, a former French colony and current victim ...

Infections and Inequalities: The Modern Plagues8 reviews
Paul Farmer

University of California Press, 2001

Where are the Virchows of global public health?
The context of epidemics is important. What happens to the poor people who have drug resistant tuberculosis? Market mechanisms do not serve the interest of global health equity. The cost-efectiveness argument is weak. Poverty limits freedom of choice. AIDS education falls short. Arguments about limited resources should not prevail. There is a global web of unequal relationships. Structural ...

Women, Poverty & AIDS: Sex, Drugs and Structural Violence (Series in Health and Social Justice)2 reviews
Paul Farmer, Margaret Connors

One of the Best Books on Women's Health Issues
"Lucid, smart, passionate, and compassionate, Women, Poverty & AIDS puts the calss back into class analysis. Through a diversity of voices, experiences, geographies and disciplines, the contributors argue that poverty as a factor in the global HIV epidemic is pervasive, neglected, and urgent.
