Applying Cultural Anthropology: An Introductory Reader2 reviews
Aaron Podolefsky, Peter Brown

McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages, 2006

Excellent materials, great selection
First off, I'd like to agree with the first reviewer. This is an excellent compilation that stands by itself (although, for an intro class, it definitely requires a "discipline-oriented" text book like Kottak as a guiding force). I would recommend this book highly to my fellow anthros and to general readers alike. What follows is a brief summary of some of my favorite articles in the ...

Epic study of Western Christianity's towering genius
Peter Brown's AUGUSTINE of HIPPO is epic study of the adventure...the spiritual-intellectual ODYSSEY...that is Life of Aurelius Augustine,Saint and uber-Father of the Christian Church in the West. Confessions of Augustine1 review
Saint Augustine

Hackett Publishing Company, 2007

the editor's preface
Michael P. Foley's "Editor's Preface" to this edition of Confessions contextualizes the translation well. It serves to locate Sheed's translation historically and academically. The "Editor's Preface" also discusses the cover art for this edition. That discussion is not only an insightful description of the art, but also relates the art to the text effectively.

The Cult of the Saints: Its Rise and Function in Latin Christianity (The Haskell Lectures on History of ...6 reviews
Peter Brown

University Of Chicago Press, 1982

A brilliant monograph
This monograph has become the classic work on the cult of the saints, and is part of Peter Brown's monumental contribution to the study of early Christianity. Brown takes on the complex phenomenon of the cult of the saints, countering the prevalent view, expoused by no less a thinker than David Hume, that the cult of the saints was merely a folk continuation of a pagan world view. Indeed, just ...

Paper Moon14 reviews
Joe David Brown

Thorndike Press, 2002

Excellent and complementary
Written in the style (and context) of Steinbeck, this book is excellent. The remarkable thing about the book, though, is that it is one of the few instances where you should read and see both the book and movie. If you liked the movie, the book provides more stories and adventures; if you liked the book, the movie brings the characters, setting, and geography to life. The book is very ...

The World of Late Antiquity AD 150-750: AD 150-750 (Library of World Civilization)11 reviews
Peter Brown

W. W. Norton, 1989

A good introduction
The world of Late Antiquity is an historical period often overlooked. The more prominent periods such as the Greek Empire, Roman Empire, Early Christendom, Rise of Islam, East/West Split, etc. take the majority of space in historical texts; often the world of Late Antiquity is an epilogue or a prologue to anothe period. Peter Brown, renowned for his authoritative biography on Augustine of ...

Poverty and Leadership in the Later Roman Empire (Menahem Stern Jerusalem Lectures)
Peter Brown

Brandeis, 2001

In three magisterial essays, Peter Brown, one of the world's foremost scholars of the society and culture of late antiquity, explores the emergence in late Roman society of "the poor" as a distinct social class, one for which the Christian church claimed a special responsibility. It is the story of how a society came to see itself as responsible for the care of a particular class of people -- a class that had not previously been cared for -- and ...

Ruger & His Guns: A History of the Man, the Company and Their Firearms2 reviews
R. L. Wilson

Chartwell Books, 2007

An Excellent Addition to any Gun Collectors Library
In 1949, just after World War II, all of the gun manufacturing companies faced a problem of selling guns in the commercial market. The Government had extensive stocks of guns like Endfields, Springfields, Colt .45's and of course any number of foreign guns and were beginning to sell these guns on the commercial market. It was obviously a stupid time to go into the gun manufacturing business. ...

Howard Hughes: The Untold Story24 reviews
Peter Harry Brown, Pat H. Broeske

Da Capo Press, 2004

A Fascinating man...
I watched Martin Scorsese's "The Aviator" and was immediately interested in learning about the "real" Howard Hughes. This book more than satisfied my curiosity. I wasn't aware of the non-aviation contributions made by Hughes; satellites, seek and destroy missles. All very important to our national security. I had never heard of Hughes' connection to the Watergate scandal until I read this ...

Applying Anthropology: An Introductory Reader4 reviews
Aaron Podolefsky, Peter Brown

McGraw-Hill, 2006

Engaging Reading
This is a phenomenal collection of essays, ranging from ancient agricultural techniques to the interpretation of Shakespeare in remote Africa. It provides basic, easy to read, and entirely absorbing examples of how the field of anthropology (as well as linguistics, sociology, archeology, paleontology, and more) is at work around the globe. Each reading is brief enough to engage even the most ...

Kaline Klattermaster's Tree House2 reviews
Haven Kimmel

Atheneum, 2008

Fun for kids, helpful for moms
Reading Kaline Klattermaster's Tree House will help any parent with a child that has been called ADHD or any parent who has a child suspected of suffering from Asbergers. Clearly Kaline is not an average little boy. He has an amazing imagination and he loves his parents in spite of their obvious differences--from each other and from him. Neither of his parents is typical, whatever that is, but ...

West of Last Chance15 reviews

W. W. Norton, 2008

Back roads plain dealing
Like Kent Haruf I first came across photographer Peter Brown years ago through his excellent book 'On the Plains'. This latest book with 151 photos continues the theme with the same vigor and passion. I thought it was a wise choice to stick to the back roads of the Plains, so much more interesting visually than the cities. The photos really convey the hugeness of this area of the Nation though ...

The Rise of Western Christendom: Triumph and Diversity 200-1000 AD (Making of Europe)10 reviews
Peter Brown

Wiley-Blackwell, 2003

Excellent book -
The book goes beyond the rather narrow sounding scope of the title; Brown nicely covers the changes in politics and economics that fostered (or hindered) the spead of Christianity from Ireland to the Middle East. The subject matter is cogently presented and enjoyable to read, unlike other scholarship of this era where authors tend to prove to the reader how much they know leaving the reader ...

James Herriot's Treasury of Inspirational Stories for Children2 reviews
James Herriot

St. Martin's Griffin, 2005

Tender-hearted peak at the past
We bought this for our niece. The stories are heart-warming, but also sometimes realistically heart-breaking. I think it'll help any child develop sympathy and respect for other animals, plus city kids will get a glimpse of farm life. We had read the comments about it being hard to read and understand, so my fiance read me a story from it before we wrapped it up and sent it out. We did get ...

Understanding and Applying Medical Anthropology1 review
Peter Brown

McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages, 1998

Fantastic book on an interesting subject.
This book has to be one of the best primary source collections for the field of Medical Anthropology. Illustrates many of the themes running through the heart of the field fabulously, although it could have been organized better. Highly recommended.

Buildings: Theory and Applications (Graduate Texts in Mathematics)
Peter Abramenko, Kenneth S. Brown

Springer, 2008

This book treats Jacques Tits's beautiful theory of buildings, making that theory accessible to readers with minimal background. It includes all the material of the earlier book Buildings by the second-named author, published by Springer-Verlag in 1989, which gave an introduction to buildings from the classical (simplicial) point of view. This new book includes two other approaches to buildings, which nicely complement the simplicial approach: ...

The Body and Society: Men, Women, and Sexual Renunciation in Early Christianity; Twentieth Anniversary ...6 reviews
Peter Brown

Columbia University Press, 2008

an excellent, scholarly study
Brown's book is the finest study available on sexuality and the body in the early Church. This book sheds great light on the classical, Jewish , and Christian conceptions of the body and how important those conceptions were in early Christianity, especially for early Christian asceticism. This is a must read for anyone interested in gaining a serious appreciation of the early Church. Many ...

Let Me Entertain You
David Brown, Peter Bart

New Millennium Entertainment (CA), 2001

This is the self portrait, in selective memory, of a man who led many lives, all of them full of risk, accomplishment and above all humanity. There is David Brown of Zanuck/Brown, there is David Brown, raconteur extraordinary with astonishing stories about his encounters with the famous and notorious and the all-powerful-including Mafia chieftains, presidents, the reclusive Howard hughes, the super-rich J. Paul Getty, William Randolph Hearst, ...

The PhotoshopWorld Dream Team Book, Volume 1 (VOICES)2 reviews
Scott Kelby, Kevin Ames, ...

New Riders Press, 2004

Doesn't quite get there.
I was very disappointed. As a run of the mill photoshop book it's fine - but "dream team" it's not. For me, the images lack the "wow" factor, and it doesn't inspire me to pick it up for a second time. Instead I'd recommend Scott Kelby's "Classic Effects" which is a lot more fun and interesting.
