American Civil War Artillery 1861-65: Field and Heavy Artillery (Special Editions (Military))1 review
Philip Katcher

Osprey Publishing, 2001

Insufficiently detailed and somewhat confused, but inexpensive
A bargain for those who are already planning to buy Philip Katcher's "American Civil War Artillery" volume 1 or 2, this title contains both volumes within a single cover at a single volume price. This is not a really bad work, and it has some useful information not found in some other titles, but there are better works available in the subject. This is particularly true of the first half of ...

Great Gambles of the Civil War1 review
Philip Katcher

Castle Books, 2003

A gripping and well-balanced book
Philip Katcher has written many outstanding books about the Civil War, and this is one of his best yet. It is basically a collection of magazine articles that cover some of the riskiest gambles of the war, with clear maps in each chapter. There's a good mixture of well-known gambles like the 33rd Virginia's attack at First Manassas, the 20th Maine's charge at Gettysburg, and J.E.B. Stuart's ...

United States Army (Men-at-arms)2 reviews
Philip Katcher, C. L. Doughty

Osprey Publishing, 1977

Superseded by Later Works
This book is well illustrated but tries to cover too much in too little space. When such as Shelby Stanton (c.f.) devote whole books to the WW II clothing alone and others to individual equipment it is no longer needed. The publisher has realized this and has brought out a new three volume set in this series covering the same era. The publisher should simply let this one go out of print. Its day ...

Confederate Cavalryman 1861-65 (Warrior)2 reviews
Philip Katcher

Osprey Publishing, 2002

Confederate Cavalryman
This book is a fascinating work on the cavalry of the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. It is a relatively short book (64 pages) and is absorbing and fast-paced; for an interested reader it shouldn't take more than an afternoon. It is nonetheless a very informative and intimate look into the life and times of the Confederate cavalryman, detailing his recruitment, training, ...

The American War 1812-14 (Men-at-Arms)
Philip Katcher

Osprey Publishing, 1990

Typically the United States is said to have declared war on Great Britain in 1812 because of the Royal Navy's impressment of American seamen and the British desire to create an Indian buffer state. An Englishman William Cobbett, described the real cause of the conflict: 'There seemed to be wanting just such a war as this to complete the separation of England from America; and to make the latter feel that she had no safety against the former but ...

Sharpshooters of the American Civil War 1861-65 (Warrior)2 reviews
Philip Katcher

Osprey Publishing, 2002

An excellent introduction to the Civil War's elite soldiers
This is a great summary of the role of sharpshooters in the American Civil War. It has a list of the different sharpshooter units of both Union & Confederate armies, b & w photos of artifacts including a James Morgan target rifle, a Colt revolving rifle, a Sharps rifle, 1858 Enfield rifled muskets, & thankfully, an 1863 Whitworth, the preferred choice of the Confederate sharpshooters. I've been a ...

American Civil War Armies (3) : Specialist Troops (Men at Arms Series, 179)4 reviews
Philip Katcher

Osprey Publishing, 1986

An Excellent Book!!
This book provides information for reenactors, people that paint toy soldiers, and people that love to read. I enjoyed this book a lot. When I got it, I began to look it over from front to back. This series of books is a must for Civil War buffs. I've looked at other books in this series and I loved them too! This book shows color pictures of uniforms and soldiers. It also has black and white ...

The American Indian Wars 1860-1890 (Men at Arms Series, 63)1 review
Philip Katcher

Osprey Publishing, 1992

Great pictural guide
As a re-enactor of 19th century military personnel, the pictures in this book are a great guide for assisting me with keeping my uniforms authentic to the time periods I am recreating.

American Civil War Artillery 1861-65 (1): Field Artillery (New Vanguard)2 reviews
Philip Katcher

Osprey Publishing, 2001

Another Great Reference Manual From Osprey!
For the Civil War enthusiast, reenactor, or just for reference for your hobby or collection of Civil War miniatures, this Osprey book again hits the mark for accuracy and detailed color renderings of all major and lesser know artillery pieces, limbers, caissons, forges, and accoutrements for them, plus excellent photos to support the artist's renderings. Highly recommend this entire series for ...

Army of Northern Virginia2 reviews

Taylor & Francis, 2007

Very simplistic
If you need a cheap-ish Civil War book for your 10-year-old buff, this may be the one. It's simple, easy to read, doesn't contain overwhelming inaccuracies, and has lots of pictures. I wouldn't really recommend it for adult scholars. It's a decent quick reference but is so short and lacking in either detail or gripping writing that many people won't find it very useful.

The US Army 1890-1920 (Men-at-Arms)2 reviews
Philip Katcher

Osprey Publishing, 1990

Another fine overview ! (007)
I freely admit to not having much of a knowledge of the US Army, especially before and during WWI, and found this book immensly valuable. Philip Katcher and Gordon Rottman have done a great job for both the casual and dedicated reader of this field, and Jeffrey Burn and Ron Volstadt once again provide some excellent colour panels. The authors take you from the era of naval pre-eminence that ...

US Cavalry on the Plains 1850-90 (Men-at-Arms)1 review
Philip Katcher

Osprey Publishing, 1992

Amazing book!
A great book about the development of uniforms, military organization and equipment of the US Cavalry in the XIX century. Incredible detailed and superb color plates by Ron Volstad. Excelent to complement other related titles about US Cavalry and American Plain Wars.

Army of the Potomac (Men-at-Arms)1 review
Philip Katcher

Osprey Publishing, 1974

Army of the Potomac
'Army of the Potomac' is an excellent source on the Union Army in the East. It has helpful color plates by one of Osprey's first artists, Michael Youens, and looks at the organization, insignia, and weaponry of the Union infantry, artillery, and cavalry in detail.

Flags of the CIVIL War (Coe)1 review
Philip Katcher

Osprey Publishing, 2000

SUPERB Civil War Flag Source!
This excellently detailed book describes the various uses of Regimental colors, camp colors, battle flags, etc., with excellently rendered color artwork and numerous photos of actual flags. The book has both US and CSA flags broken in sections, with very detailed information on individual state and regiment flags that would satisfy most enthusiasts and diorama makers. Highly recommend this ...
