Good for the PMP exam until September 2005
There is not much to say about the PMBOK's content. It was the de facto standard for project management from 2000 to 2004. The content is simply excellent. If you intend to take the PMP exam before September 2005, you simply must buy it. If you intend to take the test after that date, though, you should buy the 2004 version. This is book not for amateurs. If you have no experience ...

Guidebook for PMI members and those considering membership
This is a general book on project management that frames project management as a practice and makes a case for the Project Management Institute's approach and its Project Management Professional certification. Sections 1 and 2 frame project management by giving a brief history of the profession, defining project management as a practice, and discussing knowledge areas and providing statistics ...

Giant Checklist to improve your Project Management skills!
For the longest time, the main standard that PMI focussed on was the development of the 'Guide to the PMBOK'. The purpose of that Guide was to 'Improve the Performance of Projects'. There is another standard (on WBS) to achieve the same purpose. In recent years, PMI has decided to address other goals like 'Improve the Performance of Project Personnel'. It is towards achieving this end that the ...

Emphasis on the imnportant element of managing projects
A friend who is an experienced PM once remarked that there are three stages to becoming an enlightened project manager: (1) learning the techniques, (2) realizing that it's really about people, and (3) Epiphany - it's about ensuring that someone else gets the blame if things go wrong and 1 & 2 are core skills in achieving this. Regardless of how true his theory is, this book will certainly get ...

Good for certification purposes
I find this book (just like the rest of PMI's standards) a very important reference for those wishing to acquire the "text book" knowledge, and very important for certification purposes. But if you are looking for practical knowledge, and details on how to implement OPM3 on your organization, or on clients, then I recomend other books like "Every Organization can implement OPM3". Hope this ...

A must for project managers
It's hard to imagine a time when A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) wasn't around. Yet, just twenty years ago, PMI volunteers first sat down to distill the project management body of knowledge. Their hard work eventually became the PMBOK® Guide, now considered one of the most essential tools in the profession and is the de facto global standard for the industry. ...

Appreciate of the french version of the PMBOK
This book provides an exhaustive conceptual approach to Project Management. People who wish to pass their CAPM or PMP are advised to go through the book and learn the concept. The book could, however, be of more value if it contained more illustrations of the application of these concepts in day to day business life.
PMI Project Management Salary Survey 2000 Edition

Amazing, but not for children!
The inappropriate content in the Pmi Project Management Salary Survey 2000 is kept to a minimum, but I caution readers to avoid looking at pages 233-315 unless lavicious descriptions of Errors type 2 and beyond appeal to small chickens. Despite the Perkins diagrams and the SBH graphs (as opposed to the "Ezzy-Bezzy" or "YBT" sort), you will find all sorts of E:2 design work. Overall, I was pleased ...

The Standard for Program Management

Project Management Institute, 2006
Excellent standard - unless you're just prepping for the exam
As a program managers' guide this is an excellent book. Given a few hours of thought you can follow it along to a decent program office roll-out. As a study guide for the PGMP exam, which is supposed to be based on the standard, you're going to be pretty confused. The PGMP exam is nothing like the PMP exam, with its rigid focus on what processes are sub-sets of other processes. For the ...

A Good Introduction to the CAPM Certification
The Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) Role Delineation Study is essentially a high-level introduction to the CAPM certification examination. It describes how the certification type evolved, and provides some general insight and guidance into the six domain areas covered by the exam. While going into further detail regarding the exam must be considered 'out of scope' for this PMI ...

DoD PMBOK and much need extension to PMBOK
I use this book often in our PMO for Defense and Civil space systems and find it a much needed replacement for PMBOK. First a previous reviewer claimed that this book is $9. It is actually free (in PDF format) from the DoD acquisition community site. Second the percentage change is reverse the previous. About 70% is new. Either buy if you want a bound version or download to make your own ...

Wonderful research
I respectfully disagree with the two reviews posted. This was academic based research and provides information to those of us looking for the next steps in project management. Academic research does not provide the silver bullet that is so desperately wanted. However, it provides the background and sound grounding that allows senior project managers to develop new practical applications based on ...

80 page guide to an important topic
The four chapters in this short, focused book introduce work breakdown structures, define them from a conceptual point of view, explain why they are the foundation of project planning, and show how to create one. These chapters comprise a scant 18 pages, but are thorough enough to accomplish the objective of explaining the Project Management Institute's practice standards for WBS. The real value ...
The Future of Project Management: The First PMI Forecast

Future can be futuristic?!
The book is definitely interesting and worth a read, at least from the standpoint of gaining a '20,000 foot overview' The first half of the book is based on research and insightful analysis. However, if this is not a practitioner's guide and even the trends articulated are a bit dated. Perhaps time for PMI to come out with a second edition of the book?
