a good book.
Professor Richard Epstein does a very convincing job in this book of articulating a legal system which is far more practical and comprehensible than the regime we currently enjoy. In the tradition of the law and economics approach, Epstein's major theme is that the administrative costs associated with so much contemporary and complex law far exceed any incremental benefit in the social ...

An Excellent Review of Judicial History
Because the political philosophy of our fathers is rooted in a combination of Lockean and Hobbesian philosophy, the initial Federal government's role was basically defense, foreign policy, and refereeing interstate commerce. It was not to provide for needs such as retirement, health, food assistance, farm support, or recreation. Yet, today the federal government is involved in all these ...

What a great casebook!
I really enjoyed this casebook. In contrast to other books, this one not only has good main cases, but also smaller cases so you get a fuller picture of the law. After you read a case, there is a "discussion" section where the author discusses other similar cases in that area and the questions that can arise (what if? type of questions), which really get you thinking. Some people have said ...

Takings: Private Property and the Power of Eminent Domain

Well-argued
This fine book by Prof. Richard Epstein has probably been more influential than the casual reader may be aware. The heart of Epstein's claim is that _anything_ the government does that imposes any sort of "cost" on anybody amounts to a "taking" for which the Constitution requires just compensation. We all know how this is supposed to work as applied to the usual exercise of eminent domain. But ...

Exactly what I was looking for
I searched all over amazon, and I couldn't find an edition of the Mozart sonatas that I wanted, so I took my chances with this one based on the reviews of other books from the same publisher. It was exactly what I was looking for. It includes fingering, and although it is sometimes questionable, you can usually use it as a base to establish your own fingering. It tells you exactly how to do the ...

Skepticism and Freedom: A Modern Case for Classical Liberalism (Studies in Law and Economics)

Almost a classic
Anyone looking for a balanced, albeit compassionate, but not mushy, defense of limited government should be directed to read this superb book. All writing is social. For some time Epstein has been having a running dialogue - or shall we say a running battle of words - in his books with apologists for the welfare state such as Cass Sunstein's contrapuntal book The Cost of Rights: Why Liberty ...

Classic Epstein
This is a great book that will make you think hard about how we regulate the pharmaceutical industry. You probably won't agree with everything but Epstein raises critical issues that need to be considered. If you are afraid of having your ideas being challenged (like the first reviewer) then don't order this book.

Hail to the Redskins!
An excellent read for any 'skins fan seeking a potted history of the club and some of it's greatest characters and players. A little bit of a misnomer though as the book says updated and revised but in fact only covers up to the 2000 season. I'd love to see a newer version out soon. The writing is top notch and evokes some great images of the Redskins storied history. A useful addition to any ...

Another gem by Richard Epstein
Richard Epstein (author of "Takings" & "Forbidden Grounds") offers up this collection of essays on why economic liberty works for the benefit of virtually everyone, while planned economies don't. Epstein is a brilliant logician and wordsmith who can draw even the most skeptical into his web of reason. He doesn't argue that free market liberalism is best because it is the most moral, but because ...

Rigorous and original
Shamefully, most critical thinking textbooks are not particularly logical. They present mostly grab-bags of rules and fallacies linked together more by scholastic repetition than by reasoning. By contrast, Epstein's text is backed up by a rigorous, coherent theory of inference. The book is nonetheless utterly clear and non-technical, more so than any other informal logic or critical thinking ...
Five Ways of Saying "Therefore": Arguments, Proofs, Conditionals, Cause and Effect, Explanations
Richard L. Epstein
Wadsworth Publishing
, 2001
Logic is the art of making inferences, of how to say "therefore". In this book, Richard L. Epstein surveys the five main ways to do that: arguments, proofs, conditionals, cause and effect, and explanations. He does so in an exceptionally clear and simple way, unifying the most advanced research in a presentation that is suitable for students, scholars, and instructors. Part I covers arguments, the use of inferences to convince someone that a ...
The Future of the Voting Rights Act

Originally adopted in 1965, the Act extended full political citizenship to African-American voters in the United States nearly 100 years after the Fifteenth Amendment first gave them the vote. While Section 2 of the VRA is a nationwide, permanent ban on discriminatory election practices, Section 5 targets only certain parts of the country, ...

A Valuable Addition to Any Political Science Library
If you are looking for a quick introduction to the principles and practices of the Libertarian Party, avoid this book; a good search engine and some basic research skills are all you need. The book itself is a collection of short essays from a wide range of ...
