Emerson: The Mind on Fire19 reviews
Robert D. Richardson Jr.

University of California Press, 1995

When the genius of biography meets the genius of literature
Mr. Richardson's 'Thoreau A Life of the Mind' was not only the best biography I've read on Thoreau, but one of the most exhilerating and enlightening reading experiences of my life. So I decided to read his 'Emerson The Mind on Fire.' And it was every bit as intimate and intelligent. There are times you feel that you're intruding upon Waldo and Henry on one of their walks. It was an ...

First We Read, Then We Write: Emerson on the Creative Process9 reviews
Robert D. Richardson

University Of Iowa Press, 2009

No other way
This book is as much about Ralph Waldo Emerson as it is about reading and writing. It reveals the books he read as well as the way he thought and wrote. Thinking was not part of the title but it was clear that it is every bit as important. Emerson was an intellectual in that he read, thought, and wrote. That is the intellectual's life and anyone aspiring to that life would find this a helpful ...

Three Centuries of American Poetry3 reviews

Bantam, 2009

Good introduction to poetry
While skimping out on a few of the more famous (or so I believe) poems by these authors, this book is a very good introduction to the american realm of poetry. I was disappointed to not find some of my more favorite poems by people such as R.Frost and J.D.Hatter, but was happy to find many more that I did like by authors previously unbeknownst to me.

William James: In the Maelstrom of American Modernism17 reviews
Robert D. Richardson

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2006

Don't Read This In Public.
Richardson's biographies of Thoreau and Emerson are two of the best books I've encountered in my life of voracious reading and this is one is just as wondrous. I cannot read any of these books in public, because they all make me want to weep and clutch my chest and shout, "At last! Everything has been revealed!" I wish I could explain why Richardson's biographies are different from anyone ...

Faith in a Seed (Limited Edition): The Dispersion Of Seeds And Other Late Natural History Writings (A ...2 reviews
Henry D. Thoreau

Island Press, 1993

Remarkable Volume
This book contains the manuscript of one of Thoreau's last works, The Dispersion of Seeds. Through his daily walks in the woods, Thoreau became fascinated with the question of how the plants he was seeing became established. A puzzling riddle of the time that local townsmen constantly asked was why when they cut pine forests, oak forests seemed to grow up, and when they cut oak forests, pine ...

Henry Thoreau: A Life of the Mind7 reviews
Robert D. Richardson Jr.

University of California Press, 1988

A biography and biographer equal to this man and his life
As a young man my Holy Trinity was: Emerson, Thoreau and Whitman. Emerson's essays are pure poetry; Thoreau's "Walden" and "Civil Disobedience" became a blueprint on how to live and why to write; and Whitman's life and "Leaves Of Grass" taught me about myself. "A Life Of The Mind" filled each page with the authenticity and richness of a life well lived. Thoreau, the humanness, the naturalist, ...

Lorman Education Services, 2006

For contractors and subcontractors involved in the construction industry, the ultimate goal is to be paid in full for all of the work performed.
